In Sabyasachi

Alia attended the Met Gala wearing a custom sari from Sabyasachi with jewels from his fine jewellery line. It will be very hard for anyone to top Natasha’s Sabya + Schiaparelli 2022 Met look and while I don’t think she looks bad, between the Victorian rose print and the fringe, am getting too much of a lampshade vibe.

I don’t love it. I don’t hate it either.

  1. This evokes an old South Indian socio-fantasy movie vibe. I like it. Perhaps not a memorable look like as you mentioned but it’s nice. Fits the theme. I can never see Alia as an IT girl or a fashion trendsetter (no hate, she just doesn’t come across as one) so this is about as far as I can say.

    • Except Saree being a timeless piece, it doesnt fit the theme, Garden of Time, looks like they have taken Garden in literal sense.

  2. Yeah, while I am glad that she’s bringing a saree to Met was kind of underwhelmed with the choice, and the lampshade compare is spot on. I don’t like the mosquito net saree fabric that I thought was retired a few years back, wish it was a more luxurious fabric that had been chosen as the base.

  3. This sari is more springtime than garden of time. Having said that, it’s a well put together look and looked great on the red carpet. For once the headpiece didn’t look out of place or forced as it so often does on red carpets abroad.

  4. It’s a pretty, pretty saree on a pretty, pretty woman.
But is it MET worthy? Probably not.

I also don’t think it’s entirely flattering on Alia? Might just be me but there is too much fabric around her; almost like she’s swaddled.
I also don’t like the giant bow on the back.

The hair, make up and accessories were pretty bang on.

  5. Given the rich tradition of floral embroidery in our Indian Textiles on sarees and shawls, it is kind of disappointing to see Sabya put out something so pedestrian.

  6. Love the saree/gown or both and incredible make up. I don’t have high expectations from Alia she’s a pretty little girl vibe, and fits well in this look. Wish there were some exploratory designs from more imaginative designers like Manish Arora, Shane peacock, or Rohit bal too maybe.. sabya has the typical play of crystals and pastels and lengthy sheery fabrics . Most others looks were dud too so not sure if the theme translated, it was kind of difficult to put in design.

  7. I feel like this Sabya design is very been there-done that. Seen it multiple times and gives a very sangeet wedding vibe. Also the various elements – tassels, bow lace detailing don’t come together, somehow looks tacky for a Sabya design. I like the hair, loose strands. Overall though I feel like Alia always goes the safe “look fair and pretty route”, not something that fits the bill for a high fashion event. Also, her frame is very petite so the silhouette leaves much more to be desired because the fabric is just bunched up and there’s no elegant structure to it..

  8. I think something richer was needed in terms of fabric and color. This isn’t bad at all you but can have so much more fun at the Met Gala…
And is it just me getting Monjulika vibes?

  9. Oddly, I kind of like the garden nymph vibe in getting, a wood sprite or a fairyland creature. Alia doesn’t have the figure/face of a glamazon, nor is she a fashion girl but this, I think, respects her physicality and vibe while still staying with the theme.

  10. i thought this is a pallavi jaikishan saree….does this outfit suit met gala ? nope? is this saree wedding reception worthy ?yes…
Alia has this tendency to drown in her clothes but stylist have no idea how to style her sometimes

but her face looks dreamy and beautiful

  11. I feel it’s bit over designed. I think the problem is the blouse. The bow thingy in the back +
Flutter sleeves + neck pattern ; too many things going on.

    • It reminds me of the delicate Parsi gara sarees with intricate beautiful crystal n thread work, but this was ten times more.

  12. This is very caricatured look! Whole vibe is exaggerated Indian wear – and Sabya likes to stick with these bands and head pieces which are so done with.

  13. At first glance yesterday, I absolutely loved it. She’s wearing Sabya and no chipku bun that many wear, so that’s a win. Yes, it does seem like Sabyasachi is just churning out the same designs as seen on Deepika and Katrina. Now looking at it, there’s a little too much happening with the double pallu, tassels, bow, and one flutter sleeve. I still think its a good look and apt theme wise.

  14. Its not working on her! She is petite and drowning in the fabric here. It may have been more impactful on someone taller but she didn’t do justice to it and vice versa. Also, like others my first thought was, how is it different than any other sheer/tulle sabya saree. It’s boring, it’s safe and it’s NOT high fashion.

  15. For The Met, this is not it.
The sleeves are unflattering. The posture is awkward. The florals are way too muted on an already pastel fabric . Plus it looks like it was designed with a tall person in mind.

This is the one chance that designers can go over the top. I refuse to believe that this is as creative as Sabya can get.

  16. I think this looks fits well into her comfort zone. The sari is beyond exquisite and she truly looks like an angel fallen from heaven right into a beautiful garden. This is one of the few occasions I think the word ‘ethereal’ truly applies. My only grouse-the hair. Not feeling it and makes what is otherwise a calmin, pristine look seem a bit messy and chaotic. The glass skin makeup is on point, as always and not everyone can pull it off as flawlessly as Alia.

  17. I wish Sabya made this as a gown , would be so striking & create a statement. I think we have seen way to many Bollywood actresses do this look for their wedding ( saree with a train ) that this looks boring .

  18. Don’t mind the blouse so much as much as the net fabric and her POSING.
Alia may not have the physique to carry off a train-esque saree like others pointed out, but she for sure can offset that a bit with her poses & overall body language.

Pic 2 is all sorts of awkward and contrived. To me, she comes across as trying too hard in front of the camera as opposed to gliding seamlessly in a saree. Her walk should really be like moseying in a garden to match with the theme of her ensemble instead of appearing so uptight.
