Day 1: Anjana Bhargav

There were no happy mediums in Anjana Bhargav’s show, either you really hated a piece or you really loved it. Her collection was titled, ‘Revival’ and the first thing that immediately pops out at you is its organic, earthy vibe! There was again that ‘white’ which seems to be really a dominant hue in all collections so far, but there were also golds, powdery blues, pinks, greens, beiges…all pastel shades dusted with subtle metallic.

I loved a couple of those gold dresses. Beautiful shapes, and the subtlity of the metallic gold brings it out even more. Its one of those shades that works spectacularly with all skin colors! Its hard to find something to dislike about the Saris sequence too, they were all crafted exquisitely..

The long tunics and pants (salwar-kameezes?) were quite uninspired. Especially the ones in white. While they were simple, very wearable, they were also quite done and tired. There was really nothing fresh about the idea! The long dresses just didn’t work. Neither did the long jackets over the dresses.. And those baskets?

Like I said.. what was good, was very good. There were no happy mediums.

Day 1: Payal Jain

For me, this show of Payal Jain’s was very bleh. The models were styled the same old boring way and while I can appreciate the craftsmanship that might have gone behind the clothes, thats where it ends for me. There was just a bit too much smocking and embroidery going on! The dresses at times were gathered and billowing, smocked and embroidered all at one time to a not so great end result! The show did have a feminine, whimsical vibe, even victorian at times.. I guess thats her way of interpretting, ‘ultra-feminine’, I don’t know!

But am not totally dismissing the show, the collection had its high points..some individual pieces were fabulous like those ‘achkan’ inspired tops!

Day 1: Rajesh Pratap Singh

Day one of the Fashion Week seems to have gotten off to a great start! Below are a few pictures from the Rajesh Pratap Singh Show and all in all, there was a lot to like in his collection!

I absolutely adored the whites.. I can see pret lines flying off the shelves when they hit the stores! Loved the infusion of color with appliqués, subtle geometric lines at the waist or with happy polka dots!

Navy was the dominating hue for the next sequence with printed tops and dresses! Those too were fabulous! Often the outfits were accessorized with dramatic oversized flowers in contrasting colors and that was a brilliant touch. And I spotted red patent bags on the runway! Looks like that trend is going to be around for a while..

Before you think, the entire show had me gushing, that was not to be! I didn’t care for the evening/metallic sequence much. The geometric prints in metallic undertones, in shades of blue, just didn’t do it for me.. However, the more subtler pieces were great!

The models were styled well too. Subtle clean make-up, piled, messy uo-dos. Nice. All in all, a fresh, clean line. I liked it. Didn’t make me go wow. But I liked it.

Deepika Gehani’s Diva Show…

DIVA…a term used to describe a woman of rare, outstanding talent. It comes from an ancient Italian meaning of “goddess”.

Alas, it looks like Deepika Gehani never checked out the meaning of the word before she decided to use it in her fashion show!

This is one of those posts where I wasn’t having a hard time picking my best choice.. but rather I was having a terrible time picking my worst piece of the lot!! After looking at Ms Poonam Dhillion who was also in attendance, I have decided to pay homage to her and have a competition.. A La Ms. India ishtyle!

And the winners are..

Fourth Runner-up:

Ms. “What Princess Leia would look like in a Sari”! A simple girl whose favorite idols include Silk Smitha, and, she is currently shooting for “Ishtaaar Wars!”

Third Runner up:

Ms “I am dreaming I am in a Manish ensemble!” Her hobbies include walking backwards with eyes closed and she believes in saving energy by wearing mirrored clothes which she believes capture solar energy…

Second Runner up:

Ms. “Zebra on ecstacy”!

She has 20-20 vision and would love to become an optical illusion puzzle designer.

First Runner Up:

Ms. “I promise no animals were harmed in the making of this dress”!

President of PETA India, she is a pure vegetarian whose favorite dishes include murgh makhni and rogan josh…

And the winner is (drumroll plsssss!)

Ms Simone Singh in this ghastly red ensemble with ugly red lipstick. I guess she just watched Umrao Jaan and thought she could (snap! snap!) “work it”. No baby girl…you ain’t!
