Sari Style

Both Nandita and Lillete picked saris to wear to a recent movie screening. Of course, given it was Nandita’s film, the filmmaker’s choice of a dressier, more festive sari (and jewelry) was keeping in line with the occasion. Both ladies looked lovely!

  1. Can someone ID Nandita’s saree? Is that a chanderi, banaras silk, or tissue something? I see it a lot in weddings and would love to acquire one.

  2. yes, please feature and love the regular drapes too! we tend to focus excessively on the sarees (or lehengas) of young actors and to people who don’t live in india or experience sarees only on social media, it tends to indicate that everyone’s wearing the non-existent blouses and sequinned sarees. the likes of shanaya are the exception, i promise you! and while they must have their space too, they are in no way threatening or undermining the regular drape.

  3. 30 years back in my community blouses of this sort would have been “daring” and frowned upon. Times do change.

Personally I don’t like sleeveless blouses with sarees. Visually I like sleeved blouses or no blouse. But I think its great that the biggest change in urban India at least is that girls do not have to conform to modesty rules. Where I live young girls do wear spaghetti strap blouses and no one cares (though decolletage is rare).

    PS: Lilette does look ageless!
