Sari Style

Comment image 77

The opening ceremony of Cannes saw Ms. Padukone in a striped sequin sari by Sabyasachi which tells me we most likely are only going to see her in his designs throughout. Having said that, I thought this would’ve been a very impactful look if the eye-makeup was kept simple but Priyanka thinks the eye-makeup worked but the headband was overkill.

What did you think?

  1. Loved the outfit! The tiger stripes saree was great and as much as I’m sure everyone’s gonna have a field day saying “oh Deepika and Sabya yet again”, let’s face it, this is a different look and unlike her usual Sabyasachi outings. Also it’s great that being the only Indian and woman of colour on the jury, she opted to wear a saree. Let’s appreciate that!

However, I really wish her makeup had been different as it just lets down what could have been such a striking look…they really did her dirty neck up which you’d think would be an impossible task given how gorgeous she is. Here’s hoping she ups her hair and makeup game and serves some better looks that actually do her justice!

    • I think she may have started off with her eye makeup looking perfect but then the humidity and heat of Cannes made the whole think smudge. The eye makeup looks like a mess in some close ups.

  2. P.S. Personally would’ve loved it if she left her hair flowing with light eye makeup and a red lip. Now that would’ve been hot!

  3. What monstrosity is this ? Ugh with the overdone eyeshadow, like why ?
I don’t even like the sari. Again why ?

  4. I feel the saree is a strategic look because she’s representing India as a Cannes jury member . The make up certainly creates the drama & I think it works ! I’m sure the gowns are reserved for the bigger events

  5. She looks radiant but this look seems meh. I just can’t get excited about. It reminds me of her Om Shanthi Om look with the bouffant hair and the oversized eyeliner… done and done. Are gold/jewels in hair the next big thing now? Karishma wore a bejeweled headband for Ranbir/Aliya wedding if I remember correctly.

  6. Is it just me that finds the black eye makeup and brown eyebrows seem to clash. Overall she looks like a diva and A+ for sari.

  7. I’m honestly disappointed with the whole look. Straight outta Om Shanti Om. The saree is hardly interesting and even looks messy in the inside pics. The eye makeup is ghastly and the headband could have been skipped. Wanting to be Sabyasachi exclusive is fine but if this is the game they’re bringing, I’ll pass.

    • Because Cannes is not about keeping it simple….Maybe one look but most celebs go all out and experiment with their looks…We should know this by now.

  8. Why? Just …why?
The make-up is horrendous. What is the need for this attention seeking when you already have the spotlight as a jury member. Just wear glamorous clothes and expensive jewellery and look amazing.
Deepika is gorgeous but not edgy so maybe like … work with that?
Which glamorous movie star thinks they want to follow a trend started by a rapper’s ex-girlfriend?
    Mind breaking.

The make up looks good from afar but downright scary close up.

  12. I loved it as it is except for the earrings, which look painful on her earlobes on some of the other pix I’ve seen of her! I think she’s serving a glam diva look and it works with the exagerated cat eye-liner and keeping the rest of the makeup subtle.

    • She sports earrings that are larger than her face and that which seem to almost tear her lobe apart all the time! Her signature I guess. It’s painful to look at no doubt!

  13. Not quite. Not feeling the run of the mill sequence embellished saree, danglers nor the dampness on her face.
We have seen her do better!
Nonetheless, she manages to look nice, but nothing exquisite. Much preferred her sea green trouser & floral shirt look from Sabya.

    • What can the poor woman do about the dampness on her face..its Cannes. Every one is damp this time of the year.
How is biology and climate part of a fashion critique?

  14. I rather think she looks really joyful! I’m loving look 2 as well. The eye liner thing I kind of dig the graphic lines. Also she’s a L’Oréal ambassador so I feel like it’s worth it. 🙂

The sari is like deceptively simple but also super glam.

  15. She looks stunning…..never thought a sequin saree could look so good. The jewelry complements the sari perfectly including the headband. The eye make surely needed to be toned down. She still manages to carry it with aplomb!

  17. I think the eye makeup is a bit too strong but it’s a very striking look. I guess this is Deepika’s style… divisive. Hopefully it gets better but this is a good rendition of a sabya saree at Cannes.

  18. I agree with you. The eye make up is horrendous with this look. From far she may have looked striking but from near omg it’s an eye sore 🙂 C’mon Deepu you can do better.

  19. She looks lovely here, however I can’t help thinking she’s paying homage to her character in “Om Shanti Om! Both her looks so far seem familiar with her style in the movie…

  20. I love her looks… this is a sequin saree but Deepika makes it look so beautiful… the eyes and headband are excessive but they add a bit of drama needed for Cannes … she is a solid 10!!

  21. Anything she wears, it is bound to attract comments. Either ways. It is a good thing that she can carry off almost anything. Love that she said fashion is fun and a personal thing. She is having fun. It shows.

  22. Reminds me of Julia Fox, the eye make up. The eye makeup with the hair and headband is definitely an overkill. Just doesn’t gel well. She looks okay otherwise but not a Cannes-worthy look. Sabya creates a new trend every 3-4 years and he styles everyone in that for that 3-4 year period.
We went from sarees with that leaf border (Rani, Aishwarya) to sarees with hair in tight bun/middle partition and bindi (Anushka, Deepika and their wedding looks) to sarees with belt (Deepika) to his latest looks with headbands ( Aalia).
It gets so common and meh after a while

  23. The look is great without the eye makeup. Which is quite done to death in recent times by Julia Fox, Kanye West’s ex who was spotted everywhere over the last few months with that eye makeup. The headband and her hair look great.

  24. Shaleena and deepika are making sari a costume. Its an overkill. The eye makeup with the headband amd that hair ufff. They both should take some inspiration from sonam’s blush saree look or from aishwarya’s black sabya sari from cannes 2010.

  25. look at what she’s doing here: she’s putting India front and center with those tiger stripes and the bold eye make-up yet keeping it fresh and light and fun. she looks radiant and the happy vibe comes through with the brightness of a sunray.
    way to go!

  26. I do not like the eye makeup period! Would have been great at the Met Gala but looks over the top and rather poorly executed on the Cannes red carpet. The hair and headband I like but again the a lovely breezy chiffon saree with floral print would have been a great choice. Very simple very classy.

  27. a lot more could have been added (bangle, necklace) or done differently (hair, make-up) but love the look as it is.

as i always say, it’s difficult to produce a first draft so kudos to deep and her team. easy for us all to nitpick.

  28. Horrible saree, I don’t see any tiger stripes it’s more like caterpillar bands. Meh saree, it was a let down. Other than her lovely face I didn’t care for this look. The same old sabya band and belt.

  29. She looks good but eye make up makes it look a bit too much. She anyway has such beautiful eyes

On a different note, it pains me to see what those danglers are doing to her ears. But, I guess, all’s fair when it comes to creating that ‘look’..

  30. Her eye makeup looks like when one tries to match the eyeliner on one eye with the other haha.. Just a little more. Steadyyy. Ugh too much. Gotta do more on the first eye now. Pffttt went a little too far again. Repeat.

Well, this is the look now isn’t it.

  31. India is being celebrated at the Festival this year. I wish she had worn a traditional weave – a great way to showcase India’s heritage.

    • Yeah, that should be perfect representation if that’s the idea to wear saree. Saw the jury pics, she stood out like a overdressed, costumey person in the line up of jurists mostly in black-beige-cream-blue colored suits, skirts. Cannes have been overhyped as a dress up platform for Indian actors.

  32. Cannes is about drama and drama it is! Love the look. The saree is exceptional but simple. The look is quite impactful. Except, I’d have toned down or shaped the eyeshadow a bit. Minor gripe aside, totally hearting this look!

  34. It’s odd that P&P didn’t put full red carpet pics. Either close up or on some other background or on top of the stairs with the rest of the jury.
Tbe look is striking in the actual red carpet pics.
