In Dundas

Comment image 71

Deepika went for drama in her Dundas gown that featured an exaggerated bow at the waist and a long sweeping train. With her hair pulled back in to a real high ponytail, she rounded out the look with striking eye make-up, Lorraine Schwartz earrings and Aquazzura sandals.

While we do appreciate the fact that she attempted giving us something unexpected on the red carpet, the effect in the end didn’t quite pan out. Between the bow and train (not to mention the fabric used) the gown felt over-designed and, between the hair and make-up, the styling felt overly thought out and in the end, the whole look just felt too gimmicky. Disregard bottom-half of the gown and Deepika looked great waist-up!

  1. “Well, my inspiration for this year’s Met Gala is the eccentric bride. It is a nod to Princess Di. What did you say, this is Cannes?” This is more camp than her Met Gala look and clearly does not belong at Cannes. I always go back to Deepika’s appearance at Cannes in that emerald green Brandon Maxwell gown back in 2017 which was such a sublime statement. Ever since, it has been a steady downhill trajectory (including last year). The stylists need to take lessons from Tilda Swinton, Julianne Moore, Cate Blanchett, Marion Cotillard, etc. If the idea to turn up at Cannes year after year, apart from the brand promotions, is to get exposure and land opportunities, this is so not the way to go. In the European fashion press, this only brings attention for all the wrong reasons. The logic here it seems is ‘the bigger the better’.

    • Agree a hundred percent. Though Cannes doesn’t come with a dress code, it seems to be the unwritten rule to go classy even if going dramatic. Deepika and her team fail to toe that line at international events. With her access and visibility, this is an embarrassment.

    • If she wore anything even close to what Julianne Moore or Cate Blanchett, she would be called out for being a snoozefest.

      • If she dressed anywhere close to Cate Blanchett or Julianne Moore, she would be featured in Vogue (NOT VOGUE INDIA) and we would all be singing her praises. Extra fabric does not make for exciting.

        • Deepika did get featured in Vogue Usa. Also, calm down girls/guys I didn’t make a comment on Cate Blanchett’s fashion and her contribution to it. I was talking about our people’s reaction to Deepika trying something similar.

      • Really Alisha?? Do you even know Cate Blanchett? Because if you did, you would have thought at least once before making such a ludicrous comment. Cate Blanchett is dubbed as the ” fashion maverick”. The silhouettes she wears has made fashion history. It takes personality and persona to wear what makes you look great and not blindly follow the trend brigade which unfortunately most of the time, our Bollywood heroines succumb to.

    • I actually read something about that yesterday, that at Cannes a classic and comfortable look is favored over a dramatic look. I guess the idea is to also sit down and enjoy the movie screenings. Just wondering about the thought process behind this look, Do the brands the actresses endorse determine their overall look or theme for dressing up throughout the event?

  2. Really liked the makeup but all things considered, I feel like DP has taken more risks at Cannes than the Met when it should really be the other way round.

  3. She looks tired and worn out at least in these pics. That hairstyle is hideous. Those raccoon eyes! A big no no unless she is performing Bharatnatyam. Why does she do this to herself every time?

  4. The first step to solve any problem lies in accepting that there is one. Shaleena Nathani, being the problem in this case. Deepika needs to wake up and let her style team go. They have no eye for fashion, can barely bring out the best in their client and just keep failing at the biggest of world stages.
This is such a sloppy gown made worse by unnecessarily dramatic makeup and hair. Deepika needs to understand that she can do elegant and drama together. Here, she just ended up looking bad. Tacky even.

  5. I agree.. it’s almost like 2 different images joined together.. Top half looks great.. loved hair, make up and the neckline.. bottom half is so meh..looks like a curtain/bedsheet going for a laundry wash.. props though for trying something different and not the usual tried and tested!

  9. I feel DP and Aish have faces which tend to look harsh with heavy makeup. This heavy handed eye make up is for drama …but ends up as a Chandni Chowk to China look throwback for me. Gown is not bad…Here your oft used phrase -she makes it work – is apt.

    • Yup ! I always notice that when at cannes, their make up always sucks !! U’d Think it wouldn’t coz they are representing a beauty brand !!

  10. This is beyond ridiculous, I hope that the actresses realise that they are actually there for a movie Premiere and not for a brand endorsement or for a fashion show walk. The outfit with a giant bow looks quite silly.
make up and hair are very sharp and on point and she looks quite beautiful as ever

  11. Yup too gimmicky for Cannes. IMO at Cannes one should go the more elegant or chic route rather than trying to make a big unconventional fashion statement; for example loving Selena Gomez’s debut here this year.

  12. This is clearly a situation where less would have been more. As statuesque and stunning Deepika is, she does not need all this volume and styling to make an impact. This is what happens when you get sucked into what a stylist thinks is expected.

Now imagine Deepika in a fantastic Zuhair Murad gown with edgy styling, side parted, slicked back hair with waves and a smokey bronze eye!
Well, we can only imagine 🙁

        • I see that only on the India side of Vogue, Harper Bazaar, Elle…when you look at the actually international bloggers like red carpet fashion awards, they have also been critical of this look. I don’t think PnP are being critical for the sake of it, they have pointed out in detail what isn’t working.

Personally, I don’t think its a good look, the eye make-up is too harsh and killing the look. Although I don’t know how she is sort of pulling it off as well…may have been comically sad on someone else.

  14. I dont know why desis treat Cannes like a fancy dress show. Kangana was equally absurd and deepika with her gift wrapped ensemble with the madonna hair also looks weird and out of place.
You see the other stars wear couture gowns and then you see these lot with sky high hair, bows, wings, and what not.

Just go classy, elegant and push the envelope in that regard. These girls are sending the envelope to a different location!

  15. Deepika looks scary. What an ugly and cheap looking gown this is! That hair doesn’t suit her one bit and the make up is so harsh – not in an edgy or fierce way, just in an overpowering way where someone even as stunning as deepika who’s face can never look bad, unfortunately does today. I can’t look at her without squinting – she’s lost amongst all of this drama.

How awesome she would have looked? Why gowns always? That too such ugly ones!! NO dress sense at all these days, Deepu!

  20. I think at this point of time there’s no winning for these celebs. Year after year, Cannes was about drama and our girls not bringing enough of it. I remember people complaining of Deepika being not dramatic enough in her first year. And i know if she had shown up in what Selena Gomez wore, people would have called her out for being basic and “boring”. Also, with major fashion magazines putting her in their best dressed list one can safely say she is getting the right attention.

    • Completely agree with you. I know for a fact that the people saying that she should have wore this at the Met would be the same ones saying she’s not taking enough risks or looking ‘camp’ enough. And had she wore a feminine Zuhair Murad, like someone on here suggested, people would called her out for wearing the same ol’ same ol’. Celebrities do have it tough, specially ones who put up appearance after appearance. Having said this, I do also believe that no one has done a better job styling Deepika than Anaita.

      • Yes and some celebrities who are truly fashionable, who really have a creative eye can find the balance and decide when to bring femininity or drama and how much drama. Just knowing niche design houses and superficial recipes for outfits, which have not stemmed from an individual’s vision and inspiration – isn’t great fashion.
And unfortunately deepika is gorgeous and a full time actress and she’s not an expert in fashion and that’s ok. That’s what good stylists are for . These Bollywood stylists are never inspired by art, or high fashion or have any original ideas – they literally just follow all famous Hollywood stylists on Instagram and find something similar with a different designer. And hence people are either left asking her to take risks or getting scared off and asking her to dial it down. Deepika is a celebrity who is fiercely loyal and too humble at heart to let stardom change her hence she always sticks to her team no matter how big the event. Otherwise if she wanted she could have juggled stylists between India and US and gotten much more established and creative stylists to dress her for these events like Priyanka does.

    • As per my knowledge of this industry (im in a slightly related one), best dressed lists are mostly curated according to brand power (since most at Cannes are representing a brand), PR push etc. vogue etc don’t have a worst dressed list for this reason. So I wouldn’t put much weight on what magazines which depend on loreal for their income say…. She’s getting attention because she’s representing loreal and for the work her PR does. Definitely not her ‘style’.

  21. I think the stars are being paid by their brand they endorse to serve this drama. To look ultra glamorous. Do they really go there to watch the movie ?! Lol. With all those voluminous gowns, trails, sleeves etc they can’t even sit. I think they will just exit back door after this red carpet photoshoot is over????!

  22. I agree with P&P, also I think blowing kisses and prancing around of the red carpet makes it even tackier but that applies across the board, not just here.

What tries to achieve by volume and height, she could just by her inherent sensuality.

  26. I think Deepika looks stunning and is having fun with her clothes for once. I think the dress is quite apt for Cannes and fun at the same time. I love the hair and make-up with it as well. She wore 4 looks on day 2 and each is different from the other and by different designers. When I saw her in the white dress, I found it breath-taking, more for the way she wore it and carried herself.

  28. I LOVED this look..cmon man, she is pulling out the stops and bringing high-voltage glamour. I like her here but that train material was off and crumpled…that for sure caught my eye. This is a movie event, and she is a movie star…this is where you dress uber glamorouly. MET is all about fashion only per se..a celebration of clothes and I think the Zac Posen gown was more about him and the gown than her.
But she looks every bit a diva and very confident. I don’t care if the best dressed lists caught her or not – they usually pick known names (read regulars in Hollywood) and compare them.
I agree with your last bit about the bottom half letting her down mainly due to the material. About the thought out bit, these events are so high profile, how can it not be thought out?

  29. You can tell how hard DP was trying to get on the best dressed lists – even if it meant she ended up looking so tacky. She kept reposting all the magazine’s posts about her being on the best dressed list – such a tacky move on its own. She shouldn’t dress for validation. You’d never see Sonam post that she was on the best dressed list – because she has that confidence on her own.

    • Yeah even during the MET in her Vogue video she says something to the effect of “Zac says if I twirl I’ll be on every best dressed list”. Don’t know what she’s trying to prove. We all know this is the work of stylists anyway. It just comes off as extremely desperate which is sad because she is way past that stage of her career.
