In Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla

Alia attended the Joy Awards in Riyadh on Saturday wearing a custom Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla ajrakh print saree paired with gold earrings. Props for not going the gown route and also for picking a saree that showcased one of the many exquisite craft works we have.

  1. Beautiful saree! She looks lovely… My only gripe is the blouse (if I can call it that!)… It looks more like an attached blouse piece, which has been wrapped like a bodice :/

  2. trust AJSK to bling out a craft known for its restrained earthiness. is there nothing they can touch without sequining and gota-ing and zardozi-ing?

  3. Ajrakh print on silk dupattas were all the rage in Gujarat this past Navratri. Absolutely heart this sari-dupatta color combination. Breathtaking, a very welcome change, and she rocks it.

  4. She looks gorgeous and the saree is just beautiful. That said, I think the blouse is completely off, not only for such a conservative audience, it just doesn’t compliment the artistic saree itself.

  5. In theory : 90%; Execution : 50%. Often the case with Alia. These are very well curated staged photos, best angles and lighting but when I saw the videos she was struggling to keep the drape on, the silhoutte was sloppy on her petite frame and the make up looked too bronzed in the official pic posted by the organised. She looked overwhelmed with all the fabric. But the design on the saree and motif are exquisite.

    • Agree – She looked overwhelmed. Can’t blame her. I have a similar ajrakh saree – without the AJSK gotapatti/sequins ofcourse – and it is a pain to carry it off. It is heavy , the fabric is too smooth so its difficult to keep in place.
Ajrakh on cotton though – absolute dream!

    • not sure where you get your information from, but ajrakh is a thriving “mainstream” craft — it is popular and has been for a long time, so much so it’s threatened only by cheaper machine prints that emulate the traditional blocks of ajrakh.
all AJSK have done is jazz it up. it serves a purpose, i guess, to drape alia in it for people who are ignorant of the craft, but designers with that kind of clout could be using their chops in far more sophisticated and impactful ways, if lifting the craft was their intention at all.

      • Yes, it is popular and an ageold craft but not as popular as Banarasi or Chanderi , Bandhani or some of the southern crafts like Kanjivaram. Except for a select few, you dont find too many people wearing its authentic version on Gaji and Mashroo silk. So, when top designers pick it up and celebs wear them it just brings the spotlight on the craft and creates better awareness and interest.

  6. Beautiful saree. The shawl or whatever that was doubling as a big train was unnecessary and looked too heavy in the video making it slip down. Without that and better blouse would have be 100 – discounting the bad makeup job .
