Of Screenings

Aishwarya and the Bachchans lent their support to Agastya at the latter’s debut film screening where Aishwarya was seen in a black long coat and trouser set paired with a silver Jimmy Choo clutch. Just a well tailored simple pantsuit would’ve been so much better here. All I see is yards of fabric with tacktastic embroidery pattern. Ugh.

  1. Oh – I thought this was the same MM she wore to the L’OrĂ©al event in Mumbai, turns out it’s not. At least, it’s buttoned up giving it some structure.

I saw her video – She looked cute but her hair has become the colour of straw since the L’OrĂ©al event.

  2. The style of the jacket, the size and the fit, the material, the embroidery, every single thing is wrong with this outfit. The mind baffles.

  3. I think I know her deep seated fear, having been in her shoes (going from super skinny in my 20s to gaining oodles of weight in my early 40s due to hormonal issues). And the fear is that with anything that is structured or form-fitting or with lightweight fabric or light colored or even a sari, it’ll become obvious. But I got over it. Took me a few years though. I’ve discovered a whole range of fabrics, prints, cuts and fits that make me look and feel awesome. And just like that, I’m back to experimenting and couldn’t be happier. I wish Aish would choose to dress not from a place of fear but that of owning her body.

For parties, I have a bunch of mid-length kaftan tops (modal or rayon or chiffon silk) that fall off the shoulder on one side but it’s not one-shoulder. I have a few asymmetrical long skirts and wear crop jackets on long tunics with straight fit pants for casual wear, saris with loose crop blouses (something like the one sonam wore for the david beckham party), saris with sleeveless blouses (like the one Kajol wore for the Archies party) but I pull the palloo over the exposed arm slightly, etc. Majority of my clothes are stitched by my darji. As for affordable brands, Global Desi, Pantaloons, etc. have great options for the plus-sized woman with modal, linen, rayon fabrics. Kaftans are all the rage and you can look for inspiration and get your own made. I am light-skinned and I feel bright colors bring out my personality so I wear a lot of those. But most importantly, I am no longer afraid and since I go that extra mile in experimenting with fashion (me and my darji), I actually get a lot of compliments because all my outfits have 1 x-factor/spunk element. And I smile a lot 🙂

    • Well let’s not forget how much flak we all have given her on these very pages when she wore a form fitted dress to Cannes years ago, when she barely gained any weight.
I have never heard so many comment on people’s rear until that post almost a decade back.
Although I hope everyone has a courage to do what you did , I think being in limelight adds an extra layer.

    • Really appreciate your openness about your insecurities, Rujuta. Your assessment is spot on. It must be hard for Ash to accept her body in her 50s after decades of public attention and the uninterrupted, undisputed most-beautiful-woman-in-the-world fame she experienced.

That said, she has access to all the fashion and mental health resources in the world. Why not get some help processing that shift? And reach out to a few stylists? Or make smarter choices like you did? She’d look and feel much better in sharper silhouettes or breezy fabrics.

A nice pair of heels or wedges, ankle length pants, elbow sleeve tunic, chunky necklace, good hair cut, muted lip color…it takes so little to look put together. Instead she delivers these frumpy looks over and over and then does a 180 on Cannes red carpet for two minutes.

I feel like the world sees her body and her insecurities anyway. She’s certainly not clueless enough to think that she’s hiding them well. Own what you have and do the best you can. That’s all anyone can do. Why talk about confidence in interviews and not walk the walk?

  4. Ash is in a phase. That’s ok. At one point we only saw her in Sabyasachi anarkalis. I do recommend coats and jackets from Libertine – because they have what she is looking for but with more options in color, cut and fabrics. Ash – we see you and love you.

  5. I don’t mind a signature look but this seems to stem from insecurity. It feels like she is somewhat concerned about her physique and looks hence the trench coats, anarkalis and tents and the same hairstyle. I would love to see her embrace her changed body with the same old panache because she still is undoubtedly a gorgeous woman!

    • Thats also possible for people to be insecure. All of us are.. on some front or the other. Shes fully entitled to dress up as she feels comfortable. She looks gorgeous- her face is glowing and hair is also done differently than the usual straight hair plastered on the sides.. Baby steps there.. and we will wait. Patiently ! she arrive ..!

  6. cant look beyond the beautiful face! Ms world for ever! Yes, could have been a more flattering outfit but for whatever reason, her appearances are not meant to be fashion statements any more..

  7. A simple black sequin saree …would have been such a wow. could have even worn the kaftan kurta her mil wore at this event .. or a Maxi dress..
There are so many options these days, was sad to see her loose , extra long pants covering the footwear ! Oh Ash pl pl see our HHC posts !

  8. I don’t mind her sense of dressing, it’s ok – she hasn’t tried to be a fashionista and therefore it’s not disappointing. She has been consistently dressing in this way. It’s just that we expect more from her – that is why we are dissatisfied. Her past performance (when she was in a different season of life) is no guarantee of future (her current self)

And who knows, maybe she doesn’t have any body issues. Just because she isn’t wearing form fitted clothes, it’s unfair to pass judgment on someone’s confidence. It also takes confidence to wear what they want and not give a Dayum to what people say.

    • I completely agree with you. It could have nothing to do with confidence. I think Aishwarya can pretty much clue in her PR about what’s worth knowing about her work and public image, and fashion may just not be high on that list -Maybe she doesn’t want to know what her audience is saying about her clothes. I don’t think she knows that people perceive her as lacking confidence, etc. because of her sartorial choices. Perhaps, in her eyes, her appearance at Diwali celebrations, nephew’s previews, and so on are private occasions, and she devotes as much effort to them as someone who doesn’t have the bandwidth to devote to looking perfect. Aishwarya is there to have fun or to fulfil a social obligation.
