Throwing Us A Curveball

December 15th, 2009 at 2:44 pm . by Payal

There have been moments I have wondered what Kareena would look like in a Kanjeevaram sari (this isn’t one though) and wondered if that day would ever come. Ok, so that day hasn’t come but it still was a real surprise shock to see Ms. Kapoor don a sari that wasn’t a Manish Malhotra. While accompanying Aamir Khan in Madhya Pradesh for the promotion of 3 Idiots, the actors visited local weavers and to highlight their low wages called in a press conference to which Kareena wore a black Chanderi sari with gold pallu.

Am sure for her next event, she will revert right back to Mr. Malhotra but until then I am just gonna stare at this miracle! :P

Catch more pics of Kareena Here.

  1. Riddhi says:

She looks like the old Kareena from k3g days. She looks pretty though, esp in the sari! Nice and Simple!

  2. charan says:

when i saw the second pic (just the top part) i was like, “wow!”, lovely saree…
then i saw the full picture and went “yikes!!”
that pallu ruins the BEATUTIFUL saree… and the thing with these sarees are the fact that its translucent and lose pallu doesnt always working… sorry Kareena. I really wanted to like it.

    • charan says:

i am not being critical, i am a south indian and have pretty high standard set on how these sarees should be worn.

      • KS says:

Original chanderi sarees are generally translucent.

      • Stuti says:

I agree completely. I think the flasy gold work on the pallu throws the saree off. I do like her waist up though. :D

        • mary says:

but she does seem to have balanced it with an understated look overall.

          • mary says:

In any case finding fault with the pallu seems to stem from a western sensibility of ‘less is more”. this is the beauty of our ethnic wear. when not done by morons like Mr. Malhotra you can have chamak/dhamak galore and still end up looking very elegant. Pick up clothes from your mom’s trousseau and you’ll know what I mean.

          • charan says:

oh no no no… you are talking to someone whose cherished closet collection is full of kanchivaram sarees, with heavy zari and colour so flashy, i would actually might get arrested for wearing them here in US. And i have raided enough of mom’s closet too :)
“less is more” is not my motto, its just that the pallu is not tastefully done for a thin saree such as this one.

    • Aqua says:

I agree with every word you just said!

    • Aqua says:

      …except the loose pallu bit…

    • KK says:

Yea I agree.. Pallu ruins the sari. I also don’t like it when black is worn at a day event. Black is such a night color.

    • Dits says:

Yep, Agree, Like the second pic without the pallu. The pallu ruins the sari.

    • SS says:

Agreed..hate the golden dots pallu!! YUCK!..takes away the elegance…

  3. pdaervo says:

Ahhh so simple, so pretty! I love this stuff :) I’m beginning to REALLY destest the completely made up, airbrushed, blingy, sparkly, perfect curl look that Bollywood actresses come to again and again. I love how real her skin looks and how natural her makeup is. The print is a bit big for her frame, but still <3

    • pdaervo says:

Also, how nice is this event? I love Aamir <3<3<3

    • HHC Fan says:

I kinda agree with you….variety is a must.. to the celebs and stylists who frequent this place….can we have more variety please? Can the Bollywood girls get their own personalityinstead of looking like clones of one another? Can the fashion magazines feature desi attires and put them on the cover from time to time please- sarees, salwars etc? Let’s have more style with fashion!

  4. Karishma says:

OMG love love love the saree <3, I want!!

  5. HHC Fan says:

That’s such a beautiful saree….I LOVE the pallu! It’s stunning! This is a great effort by Aamir….I really hope more and more young celebrities wear desi clothes from time to time to big events…and advertise what they are wearing.

  6. MANGOgrl says:

i adore her for the effort, its nice.

also luv the keep it simple look n she looks very fresh

  7. koel says:

Love love love Chanderi Sarees …You go girl !

  8. brishty says:

Not a big fan of Kareena usually, but she looks absolutely lovely here.

  9. Mridula says:

I am shocked to see her in a Kanjeevaram Sari,, finally out of dresses, and surprisingly she looks stunning in it(no heavy make up, jewelery etc)
    Keep it up Kareena !!

  10. Saya says:

Both are pretty. Sari and Kareena.

Payal, maybe, you should post a pic of yourself in a kanjeevaram. That might influence the celebs.;)

  11. Bella says:

    Terrible. Awfull.

  12. KT says:

i love the saree… very unique!! nice and fresh after all MM saris…

  13. sri says:

this girl has stood for what she believed and today is no different! how many bollywood actresses wear such sarees..even if its for one day?

  14. Vanaja says:

Is she planning to get into politics with this look?

  15. Nisha says:

This is not meant to be a negative comment, but she looks like she gained a little weight!

  16. ss says:

    she looks beautiful…love that sari…

  17. KS says:

Chanderi n Black equals Awesome! She looks lovely.. Now can we see Aamir please :).

  18. NS says:

I loved the saree..very simple yet elegant. Kareena is looking fab in it.

  19. R says:

Wow! She looks really pretty here.

  20. kanika says:

Saree is lovely… However I must say that when wearing saree at least 1 bangle or a bracelet is necessary

    Her hands are looking ‘empty’

    • Payal(HHC) says:

Probably because this may not have been a planned event as such. So she may not have carried something that went with this sari.

      • Sindhu says:

        P & P,
I know you are on a vacation, but I desperately need your help. I am going to meet a guy’s mother for the alliance and my guy has picked a Kanjeevaram in the navy blue color and the pallu is the same as that of kareena :) The saree is really pretty, but what Jewelry should I wear with this saree? Should I wear gold or pearl. Bangle, choker, chain, a strand of pearl what? Please please please help!!

        Thanks a ton in advance.

  21. SS says:

I love the fit and cut of the blouse. So simple, elegant and understated. I think the navy color of the sari adds a stateliness and gravitas to her appearance that is very event-appropriate. I would question her sincerity if she showed up in the bells and whistles that Bollywood divas and wannabes usually do. This is such a welcome change that the visible navel and loud fish scales are forgivable.

  22. Tuktsar says:

Aww, she looks lovely!! Elegant personified :)

  23. Shriya says:

love it! kareena & the sari. finally, she’s dressing better. hope this continues.

  24. Mim says:

Pallu’s a bit overworked, but in all, she looks elegant and dignified. WAY nicer than her usual MM effort at channeling traditional.

  25. shalini says:

Wow!!! this is a treat to my eyes. I like Kareena Kapoor and I like ethnic Indian woven saris, so this is refreshing to see Kareena in it. This sari brought out the natural complexion of Kareena which is make up free. This sari is very rich in its zari border. Yummy…..

    • shalini says:

I really appreciate Amir Khan for his effort to help Indian handloom weavers and promote the fabrics. Keep it up Kareena for supporting the cause and wearing the sari woven by them. If more celebrities come forward and promote our national heritage which is getting extinct, we can get back the previous glory of our precious handloom industry.

  26. mj15 says:

luuuuuuurve the sari….the border, the pallu…everything!!

  27. Kps says:

Love the black n gold on the saree, but the pallu is a bit of a downer. She’s looking simple n elegant. I like!

  28. SS says:

She looks so well put together and dignified – I’ve been saying it for aeons and will say it again; more traditional saris – they don’t even have to be the heavy kanjeevaram variety – would make so many of our Bollywood stars shine and look sophisticated and elegant in a way the more modern slinky stuff can’t.First Vidya in her Sabya sarees and now Kareena in this one – it’s a good period for fashion in tinsel town. :)

  29. Arati says:

She looks lovely and elegant. I want that sari…. beautiful

  30. Ana says:

very refreshing, luv luv luv this look!

  31. Subha says:

BEAUTIFULLLLL. i have many chanderi sarees and perhaps wudnt have chosen one with this pallu but the overall effect is so classy and refreshing…much much better that the boring sameness that goes under the garb of designer wear…keep it on kareena.

  32. BARFI says:

M not big fan of Kareena…but i love love love this black chanderi saree….

  33. shruti says:

Finally a break from those Ugly MM clothes.. Sometimes simple is the best.

  34. dn says:

Yay for handloom sarees!!! Love them, I feel I and most Indian women look best in them. Also like to collect sarees from different parts of the country.
Such a refreshing change to see Kareena like this.
A big Yay for Aamir and his support of Chanderi handloom!

  35. NFashionB says:

Well i liked this saree a lot ,simple and elegance together and inspite of its transparency(which most of indian sarees have) and kareena without any makeup /jewellary i loved it on her.

Someone sais ‘KK’ ,Black +gold on day is wrong and black is night color.
    Well i disagree…its personal choice.
Indian fashion is all about colors and glitters…day or night.
Outside india, gold shine+black is night color.

Black is all time, any time color

  36. nareeka says:

KAREENA VERY BEAUTIFUL IN CHANDERI SAREE n me big fan kareena n GOOD LUCK bebo.

  37. Kiwi says:

Wonderful, great, amazing etc etc to see Kareena like this-au natural, a look that we can identify with. Love the saree, incl the heavy pallu. She has gained weight on her face and looks better with it.

  38. Bebo says:

This tells that a simple saree can also make someone look so elegant and pretty. One doesn’t have to spend big bucks or get designer wear to get this look.

  39. Pooja says:

WOW! All I would say is, its extremely thoughtful of her to wear it. Very simple, but makes a huge statement. I <3 this!

  40. ss says:

what colour sari is it black or blue?

  41. sarah says:

    Stunning! Loving it.

  42. G3 says:

Actually Kareen did dorn a bottle green kanjivaram in the final scenes of Tashan where Akshay and her are setting up the happy ending and I think she looked pretty good in it too with her hair pulled back in a bun with flowers to go as well.

  43. lively says:

The simplicity bowls me over. Love love love the saree. esp the pallu

  44. akaa says:

Oh I just simply love this ., because I love traditional Indian textiles and handlooms .. and I saw somewhere on TV ..Aamir and Kareena visited Chanderi district in MP for their 3 idiots promotion and they went to a weavers house .. Aamir bought this sari from the weaver and ifted it to Kareena ..

The sari is super awesome and chanderi is one of my favoruite fabrics .. Kareena looks lovely !!

  45. vin says:

love the saree .. chanderi sarees are so elegant.. her make up is good too.. and i like the fact that she did not have accessories to distract from the saree

  46. Usha says:

I think she looks absolutely beautiful…could have completed it with a small bindi though.

  47. Genie says:

she looks soooo one of us :)

  48. sanghamitra says:

i totally love this saree… and i definitely want one…. looks simple and nice… lovely…

  49. Anubha says:

Her always the same hair style for MM appearances wouldve worked good here. anyways nice to see soemthing apart from sheer transi blingy sarees and racoon eyes.

  50. Sharin says:

It’s nice to see her in something less blingy, but in this sari she looks very… ordinairy and a bit too simple. Not the same wow factor. She looks more like a star when she wears the “ugly blingy MM sari’s” ..in the words of everyone on Highheel lol.

  51. kaya says:

    Fantastic, especially the second picture.

She can carry anything of if given the correct stylist..

  52. Parul says:

    So beautiful. Stunning!

  53. AnnMMMM says:

FINALLY – somebody wears ethnic and promotes the local artists and weavers….there are some “high end designers” who support local weavers etc like ritu kumar and abu jani and meera and muzaffar ali but somehow their clothes are not reachable by us commoners….so i would love it if these guys as part of their efforts also make sure these amazing sarees and clothes are accessible to more people – how about the organzing special exhibitions of sarees by these local weavers and highlighting the cause! there will surely be many takers!

  54. Siddharth says:

yay.. madhya pradesh.. i am from madhya pradesh.. she looks good..

  55. DressyDresser says:

    Delightful.She’ beautiful…….. What a pleasing change!

  56. lazyU says:

She is making more of an impact now then she does in MM’s bling. I think I’ve never considered her pretty and she looks just that. Bravo!

  57. SxD says:

The simplicity brings out the glow in her! Lovely.

  58. GG says:

She looks gorgeous and hence apart from Ash she is only on who garners so many comments on this blog. Sari is the best garment for an Indian woman. This is how a sari is supposed to be draped.Amisha and Priyanka please take notes.

  59. neetu singh says:

she looks v nice esp in the 2nd pic

  60. Amina says:

LOVE LOVE LOVE…Both the Sari (I SOO badly want!!) and Kareena in it.

  61. tania says:

kareena looks gorgeous! i wish she would do this laid-back, more natural look more often because she can definitely pull it off. what a breath of fresh air after all that same-old MM glitzyness! :)

  62. HHH says:

    wowowowowo!
    BEAUTIFUL<3

  63. marky says:

OMG!!! i was wondering what P’n'P by’aamir gifting kareena a chanderi saree . i did not know this would be the result . i am speechless …. and P’N'P stop being so critical about pallu and stuff, i see my mom wear such simple cotton sarees all the time and they look so beautiful and elegant something that money can never buy. kareena here looks good and i am touched by aamir’s gesture. kareena looks fab here and yes she wore a kanjeevaram saree in tashan and had her hair pulled back and she had some flowers she looked so beautiful she should wear such stuff more often . i am bored of seeing rekha do that for a change rekha should wear MM :P and kareena should start wearing cotton and kanjeevaram :).
P S is it just me or is something wrong with kareena’s eye make-up also i noticed this post has received one of the highest number of responses when i saw it it was 96 wow!!! that explains the popularity of indian sarees …yay !

  64. Chandra says:

What’s with not wearing jewelery? I don’t get it!

  65. Shivv says:

Where can I get this saree!?

  66. GG says:

I love this sari on Kareena. I went ahead and bought a chanderi sari.
