In Ralph & Russo

Dramatic dress + fabulous makeup + diamond danglers, her fashion formula intact, Ms. Rai made her second outing at the Cannes red carpet in a fiery red Ralph & Russo gown. Can we take a minute to talk about the Aishwarya-at-Cannes factor — doesn’t she radiate a whole different vibe?

Also, anyone else thinking of the dancing girl emoji?

  1. Bingo on the different vibe – she does radiate while she is there. It probably has to do with the press who really enjoys her presence, as opposed to so much criticism she gets in India.
In Cannes she looks and feels every bit like the Queen.

    She looks lovely.

  2. Once again, an impactful look. Love the hair colour and the way her eyebrows are being done…neck up she’s looking radiant, happy and so full of confidence which is probably selling these dramatic but style-wise classic gowns better than they’d be sold by anyone else. Fantastic run for her, IMO…seems like she knew what she wanted and kept firmly to that.

Her two red carpet appearances get an A from her.

  3. hmmm…. how can you like this look and not like her previous one … maybe you saw all the media praising her and that changed your mind 😀 . She looked gorg then and also nailed it in her second look ..

  4. Looks like she’s really been inspired by her 5 year old. Literally all her outfits so far have been so childish looking (this one reminds me of a cake). That said, however, Aishwarya is Aishwarya and looks beautiful in anything. But even her colour choices are always the same…would love to see her in softer colours and something more sleek.

  5. Aishwarya just like Jacqueline Follet in The Devil Wears Prada “plans her whole year around it”. So she doesn’t care what she wears or does while in India and brings all the glamour, drama and her A game at Cannes. Ash is the best India has to offer at Cannes and she knows it. Katrina/Deepika/Sonam can come and go but Ash reigns, just like Miranda Priestley!! 😛

  6. She has had consistently good appearances so far this year, can’t say the same about outings in prior years that had a 50-50 hit miss ratio. Experience must be playing a factor, the comfort and with it comes confidence. Plus Who ever is helping her shape up her appearances this year,…. i hope she holds on to for good!!!

    • Yep, for a 43 year old. Something sleek would be much more fitting for her and the finishing touches? Well.. they only helped to accentuate the gaudiness of this monstrosity of a dress.
      Peace!

      • What is wrong with a 43 year old wearing that color or style? The dress isn’t great but that should not be a reflection of her age… not a great dress whether a 23 years old wears or a 43 year old.
My grandma looked amazing in red at the age of 83.

  7. What is not so obvious in these pictures is how off the fit was at the bust/back – it threw me off that they would get it so wrong in the fit department, this being Cannes and Ms Rai.

But what these pictures do show is that, yes, she has such an exponentially higher wow factor at Cannes. I personally can never tire of seeing Ms. Rai, no matter where the sighting. But you can see just how much she enjoys being at Cannes – and for that, I don’t care what she wears – that face glows a thousand times brighter. Here’s to many many more appearances.

On a separate note, it’s so nice to see her shining bright after her father’s passing.

  8. This red one reminds me of a red. Naem Khan ruffled one she wore last yr for media interaction… And blends in with the red carpet. But her smile and confidence elevate this look. And she has worn pastels and soft hues a lot in the last yrs so his is good, if nt great!

  9. Actually, this one is second rate. The previous look had more drama and was my favorite appearance of her this year. But she enjoys being here and it shows. Like a commenter said above; she is consistently criticized for her sense of fashion in India; so she always seems a tad uncomfortable. To me personally, Aishwarya is the classic beauty and Sonam is the edgy fashionista and they hardly deviate from that in their appearances. Now, DP is someone who excites me because she has the stunning face+body and also the ability to deliver high fashion looks as well. So we shall see if she manages to live up to the hype in the future years too.

    • Ugh…how does this post have anything to do with Deepika Padukone? And yet you’re reaching to put down other women so that she seems loftier in comparison. Grow up and play fangirl elsewhere rather than masquerading it in such comments on a site about fashion. Such obvious and tasteless stuff ruins the spirit of what this site is for.

      • Ugh. How is this putting anyone down? Ash’s previous look was one of my fav at Cannes this year. I also said Ash is enjoying herself and it shows.

I can be excited by an actress who might not be your favorite, that doesn’t give you a right to call people names. Deepika made all best dressed lists this year and Ash did too, let’s be thrilled and not make it out to be a comparison between the two.

  10. So yesterday you were underwhelmed but you like this look?
The fit around the bust is off and the eyelashes is scary. And this look of hers has been done to death by her.

  11. I think some people on this thread participate in a mass delusion that if something is not edgy, sleek or modern it is somehow not fashion forward. This outfit and the whole look is soft, feminine and works wonders for her voluptuous frame. It might be repetitive, but part of being fashionable is knowing what works and doesn’t work for someone. For anyone claiming she needs to mix it up, mixing it up for the sake of mixing it up is often futile. She has given edgy looks in the past with varying degrees of success and I think this graceful, feminine look is her winning formula.
On a side note, I think one of the reasons this look works is not because of the dress but because of Aishwarya – she is wearing the dress, the dress is not wearing her. When you work the hell out of a look it is bound to translate well in pictures.

Also obligatory *swoon* at that beautiful face. Dark lip, cascading waves of thick hair and this beauty can do no wrong.

    • Ironic that you say ‘….some people on this thread participate in a mass delusion that if something is not edgy, sleek…’ Yet go on to say ‘….Dark lip, cascading waves of thick hair and this beauty can do no wrong.’ Aren’t you also part of some ‘mass delusion’ that ‘this beauty can do no wrong’?

  12. Noooo. This doesn’t look impactful at all! And yeah can’t get over the dancing girl emoji 🙂 the hair and make-up is absolutely on point but the dress does nothing for her.

  13. Loved the first outfit, kind of meh about this one. It feels like she or Sonam has worn similar in the past. nothing exciting, feels more been there done that types. But she looks amazing and her attitude is Royal. She exudes class and glamour.

  15. I am not a fan of the dress, but man, she is sooooooooooooo beautiful, poised, graceful, I could go on and on but I will stop before you call me a PR person ?

  16. Its the same sillhouette! Thats 3 times. If this was just an empire line gown to flatter her figure but come out of the whole princess arena it would have been an A!

  17. She looks great – but after her spectacular outing yesterday in a ball gown, I wish she gave us a different silhouette. I agree with you P and P – she just comes alive on the Cannes red carpet. I wish she carries back at least tiny fraction of her red carpet mojo back to India.

  18. Between her first look and this one, it looks as if she has literally aged some 15 years. In the blue dress with that understated makeup, she could have passed for late 20s, which is amazing for someone almost 44 years old, but here she actually looks mid-40s, because the makeup especially and the hair, ages her a lot. A bonus though is that she is smiling a lot here, and looking happy makes her look fresher and nicer.

  20. No No No – Enough with the sweetheart busts and big cinderella gowns. Please fire your stylist. Get rid of those horrible black shoes and find the thin, strappy Choos and LBs. Find cheery and happy colors for the day time looks – not black, anything but black. The red dress was just awful. Ash, you wore something similar a year or two ago. Dior, Valentino, Chanel all offer better options, and of course our favorite, Elie Saab. Sorry Ash, this was a huge miss, all around.

  21. She looks okay. The outfit looks a bit dated and cheap on her. But Imagine Fab Bingbing and Deepika wearing the same dress with their hair in a bun. It would look completely different on them.

  22. Reminded me of-https://www.highheelconfidential.com/page/2/?s=aishwarya+cannes+2016 !
I wonder how it did not remind P&P n others about Aishwarya’s last year look in Naeem Khan. That was for photoshoot. She is beyond gorgeous but I would pick last year’s red gown look over this one. And the reason is lipstick! With Naeem Khan’s red gown, she sported bright red lip colour which lend fresh youthful look. This year in Ralph&Russo, she went for darker lip shade which I find bit harsh against the delicate gown. But then that is only because I compared the two pics! Otherwise, she is splendid as usual!

  23. This year she has had a great run because of the make up , earlier her outfits were good but the make up was garish and made her look years older … but this time around , outfits may not be out of the box , they look fine but it’s her make up that was spot on and let her natural beauty shine through … if you see padukone , outfits were good and her body looked fantastic but the make up just aged her .
Most of the L’Oréal spokesmodels from India always get their make up wrong , India=colorful makeup for the make up artists….. sonam gets it wrong with the make up as well …..

Not an interesting choice of gown, but it was worn well, and by a great beauty.

  25. She looks great, although a bit repetitive, since the skirt bears a strong resemblance with her Ralph & Russo of 2 years back. Her blue Cinco remains undefeated though!

  26. On the danglers and hair front, it Looks very beauty pageant contestant type.
But keeping that aside, she looks smashing. This woman defies age! I like that she kept the darker lip. A bright red lip would’ve been a miss.

  27. Really this costumey red tiered dress is so not fit for a mature woman. Please dress your age for once lady and stop raiding closets of 3 year olds.

  28. There is something called as mature, wise classic dressing as exhibited by the likes of Meryl Streep, Helen Mirren and closer home Nandita Das. They look so classy, so above the desire to look like their fabled pasts, firmly rooted to the stage and age in life. Their beauty and grace is exemplary. Then there is this -Aishwarya ; forever trying to look decades younger, princessy dresses, excessive frills and ruffles. Ghastly.
Not a fan of Deepika and Sonam but they look like more confident and less contrived with appearances suiting their age and personality.

  31. I am a little disappointed in this one. The dress is excessively red and frilly. I wish Rai would see that her beauty doesn’t need all the frills (literally!) and drama every time.
No denying that she looks gorgeous, but no credit to the dress for that.

  32. Looking Regal in Red but I guess an whispy updo with exquisite smokey eyes & different pairs of ear ring would have elevated the look(minor gripe).

  33. She looks absolutely lovely. I would have preferred to see her an a different silhouette, because it’s similar to the gowns she has worn previously…just with tiers. Love her lip color.

  34. Ya I agree with the vibe part. I always feel she is the REAL herself when at Cannes. Otherwise I haven’t seen her normally giving beautiful laughs at public when in India. May be because she is criticized always. ?

  37. She is so stunning whatever my feelings about her wearing the same type of gown just get sidelined with how gorgeous she is! I would have love to see her in the Elie Saab dress Sonam wore – think that style would look amazing on her. But she doesn’t like to experiment & we have to accept that. Her makeup is flawless& I like that she went with a dark lip instead of a bright matching Red. For all the comments about her not dressing her age- show me a young girl or a Deepika/Sonam who would look as good as Ash in this Gown!

  38. LOL at Aishwarya -at-Cannes factor. Cannes simply means adulation from fans, media and paparazzi for Aishwarya. So she simply basks in all the attention and fawning over her. Unlike in India, where she’s judged for something as simple as carrying her 5-year old daughter.
Coming to her appearance, she looked great but this doesn’t even come close to her day one appearance. Saw a picture of her in a peach, shimmery Monisha Jaising outfit and I couldn’t help but wish she wore that for the red carpet with a soft updo and royal blue accessories. That would have been perfection! All in all, she had a superb run this year, definitely surpassed my expectations by miles. Kudos to Aastha and team.

  39. She looked too beautiful in Cannes this year. I love this gown. It’s drama without being too much and hair and makeup also fab. First everyone criticising her for not looking good in other Cannes appearance then when she is looking amazing everyone saying she is not experimenting with styles. Just appreciate her beauty and that whole world talking about her appearance especially in blue. What more

    https://www.highheelconfidential.com/malaika-arora-in-elie-saab-at-jhalak-dikhla-ja-press-meet/
with a soft feminine wispy updo, dewy makeup and light lip color. She would have given another fairy tale dreamy look. And also instead of the Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla, she would have worn a traditional handwoven saree. How classic and timeless she would look in that saree and also it’s a nice way to showcase our handloom weaves and bring popularity to the extincting art.
