Vidya At Cannes 2013: Un Chateau en Italie Premiere
Vidya may just have found her color! In a red Sabyasachi sari, she attened the latest premiere at Cannes. The same pulled back hair, fresh, dewy make-up, jewelry by House of Surana and a Ferragamo bag completed her look.
Vidya cut quite the elegant picture on the red carpet, no denying that. But her throwback to the time of MGD, dare we say, ages her a tad. We aren’t ageists and if that’s her thing, so be it.
She looks gorgeous but truth be told, the novelty’s beginning to wear off and as much as we champion personal style, we can’t help but think her Cannes outing is now beginning to look gimmicky with just this one kind of look re-packaged and presented.
One could however argue, if she looks this good, then why reinvent the wheel?
You, what do you think?

I get your point but Beginning to look gimmicky? Gimmicky started on day one with the chunni on her head and day two with the nose ring. Although she’s wearing nice things and looks okay, the message she’s sending with her style and dress up I can’t get with. Too contrived.
That blouse belongs to a 10 year old’s ( who is in the school’s ‘red house’) PT wardrobe.
Having said that she looks contented. So good for her!
She is being safe and that is not a bad thing as she looks gorgeous in these looks! But she can try a new hairdo at the very least and change the style of the blouse!
So REGAL!!
I can only imagine how horrendous it must be to be in the limelight day after day…with rising expectations and plummeting reviews from the day before…pressure!!
I agree with HHC, although she looks good, her line up of red carpet appearances have now started to feel like a costume parade. for once, she should just relax and wear what comes naturally to her…hopefully this parade and our tirade will end soon for all!
She IS relaxing and wearing what comes naturally to her…! That’s the whole point.. that’s why she’s looking same-y. She’s dressing for herself, not for the critics.
Dont agree with you..dont think she dressed up for herself ..domt think wearing a lace saree with pearls, nathni and a middle parted hairdo comes naturally to her..what comes naturally to her are elbow sleeve blouses and unkempt loose hair..both of these she has stayed away from..so iwhy not go the full run and change it up a lil more..
Rajvi, you are so right….hilarious to think that wearing chunni on top of her head, nathni and those full sleeved, close neck-ed blouses comes naturally to her!!!! Has she ever dressed like that in India?? And if she is trying to channel the old -world MGD vibe, it sure is not working!
MGD had different body-frame, face and personaility. You need a certain swan-like delicacy (and I don’t mean Super Thin) and a graceful carriage to carry that kind of look!
The point is, she is not representing some cosmetic brand like Ash, Sonam and others. She is a jury member… her role at Cannes is probably very different. So, I agree with her choice to be herself and not being a fashion victim. I am very happy she stopped that after the first day disaster.
I wish she experiments – she can channelize the concept even in salwars and lehengas – and with different hair dos …. She looks lovely, no denying that, though
This type of fashion is not for everyone for sure. But I love, love, love this look. First, it’s a lovely color. It’s simple, elegant, and absolutely divine. Yes, it does make her look tad older but she stands out among the younger generation out there as well. Adore those pearls which are huge! For me this is so perfect.
Agreed-she looks lovely and I, for one, love the Maharani GD look. It underscores Vidya’s youthfulness, if anything.
+1
Imagine, if the whole world were to only do toned & bod baring OR elfin OR seductive OR OTT or rocker chic any of the million looks out there.
Someone’s got to do regal and boy, does she do it WITHOUT falling into the trap of young princess(Sonam) or ageing royalty (uhmm a certain Ms Rai)..I think she looks timeless regal
I love this look.. on Waheeda Rehman. This is how Waheedaji always dresses for movie screenings and looks great. I am not going to comment on Vidya.
I think she just reinvented the wheel..coz this is the best she’s ever looked!!!
well, she looks nice, not a disaster but thats it, it s a”look” and so is artifical, nothing personal about it. After all she is here as an actress not representing a fashion house
She looks sweet. That is all I have to say.
But she is matchy-matchy with the red carpet 🙂
she looks like she’s playing dress up with her grandmother’s pearls.
Yep. AND the pearls don’t match! The ones on her neck are much much whiter than the ones on her ears. How can anyone miss that? Its such a rookie mistake and looks very odd.
Yeah i thought the same and was wondering why she didnt check in the mirror
I love the olde worlde vibe and the way she looks, but these blouses are beginning to get on my nerves as well! And I say this as a Sabya and Vidya fan 😛
ufff!!!
Ages her a bit? You guys are being kind. She looks like Waheeda Rehman. Big fan of both the actors and would have loved this look on the former, but it looks odd and anachronistic on Vidya.
i second !
Red looks fab on her but so bored of this hair and makeup
It’s a nice look. Vintage, lovely colour and suits her personality to a T. She has my vote.
Vidya has a beautiful face and a curvaceous body well suited for sarees. Sabya could have tried various sari colors and styles and a mix of retro and modern (especially the blouses)….sadly, here he has come across as a one trick pony..
+1
Forget about the saree or jewels, Vidya looks beautiful. I find her to be a natural beauty. perfect features and flawless skin.
Being a Sabya fan , I am disappointed by the repetitiveness of his looks during Cannes this year. No doubt a lovely colour on Vidya but the look ages her so much! What a letdown as compared to her appearance yesterday.
I disagree ,cause i think this is the least gimmicky of all looks…she actually looks very good here, and effortless. The dupatta on the head, the pulled back severe hair, huge nose ring…that was gimmicky.Vidya if you are reading this can you please wear some other colors…please please PLEASE
The pearls.. not liking them
A softer chiffon saree would have been more suited to the look she was going for. All that red with no contrast isn’t working for me. The bag is an eyesore too. Her makeup, although minimal, makes her eyes look tired. This is the least favorite of all her looks so far for me.
Let’s just accept that she is only going to be appearing in variations of this look. That way, we don’t have to waste our breath clamoring for change. 🙂 Let’s also be glad that this is quite a nice look on her. Royal and dignified is any day better than loud and unkempt.
I think this is one of her top looks at Cannes this year. She looks lovely …. This is more understated and elegant rather than the nath and the chunni over her head looks.
If she just let her hair down, would have taken the years off. But she looks good
OMG rani padmavati! Horrible
Hey, we have checked off – cotton, chikankari (???), pattu, chiffon sarees. Guess what’s coming next? – I vote for a printed silk saree like the ones Rekha, Sharmila Tagore, etc. would wear in the 1970s-1980s movies.
I was thinking the same…and I’m kinda looking forward to it.
THAT BAG! Is UGLY!
She looks so fresh faced and red looks great on her!
not kidding. my school headmistress wore the EXACT combo on our annual day, right down to the clutch! so marmish
is anyone else bothered by her left hand (always in that position!) and making her look slightly spastic?
Haha! I think her hand is sorta super glued in that position 😛
I admire her for not dressing up like a 16 yr old, and also for sticking to her individual style ….but guys this just makes her look 25 years older than she is. It is matronly. The only reason this is not a complete disaster is bcoz she is a beautiful, confident woman, and the color looks great on her. She reminds me of the rich 1960s Bollywood moms (think Achala Sachdev, Durga Khote, etc) to heroes such as Shammi Kapoor, Etc. Whaddya think?;)
MGD was royalty..real graceful elegant beautiful queen with her own fashion statements..so i consider it a crime to even mention her majesty with this sabya endorser in a same sentence…a real beauty is one which can pull every look equally gracefully..unlike vidya who can do justice to only serious looking sabya sarees..dat too ocassionally !!!!!
she looks awesome!
She looks lovely.
She might just shock us and wear a glittery Manish malhotra next. I would faint if she did that.
Yew!!!!terrible attempt at the 60s and 70s Asha Parker / Nanda look. Very obviously retro wannabe gone wrong. Hate it.
She looks fabulous although a bit more well put together than her sari appearances on home soil. The occasion calls for the extra effort though. The look however is old world and reminds instantly of someone like Gayatri Devi or Indira Gandhi. Her face and the simple hair make her look young and her age.
Nice look, on the whole.
But those blouses have got to go!!
What’s with the long sleeve T shirts under the saris? Is this the new look?
I actually like this. Yes the blouse is too long and the pearls are a bit much but that’s a nice sari and she looks classy and professional.
Vidya is in her 30s. I am not a fan of “OMG she can so carry off young looks and is so experimental”. Most men graduate to staid attire you know with age, nothing wrong with it! She is on the jury and its best she stick to her personal style rather than trying to make ridiculous style statements of either kind – that nose ring or some tacky gown/dress.
Vidya is not always the most together person. All the more reason that er instead of showcasing her body she should let her body of work speak for itself:)
Experimenting is risky and can go horribly wrong and i don’t think its worth that when you in the jury for Cannes. She can experiment some place else. Plus why change when she looks this gorgeous !!! She looks gorgeous !!!!!!
Well said. She looks gorgeous.
why??? what about western people who are ONLY wearing GOWNS.. isnt that repetitive and gimmicky??
Just because Indians have a range of stuff to choose from doesnt mean that they cant repeat.. Cmon, I think she is giving us great looks with the saree.. and she is looking wonderful!
not at all. Nandita Das always wears a simple, sari, with a khaanta or no jewelry at all and looks great. It’s that she’s being real, and true to herself. Vidya is playing dress up and not in a good way. It’s fake and looks fake (gimmicky) and feels uncomfortable to those looking. Hence all the debate.
If she just did what she does all the time, and kept it real, we could love or hate her looks, but not her intentions. :o)
Vidyapramod must have carried a suitcase full of beads to Cannes
Kindly delete the comment…I meant vidya balan
the look is soft and nice but she should have ditched those pearls and watch.
I hope these long-sleeved t-shirts trying to be blouses don’t become trendy coz they just look hideous. She looks so pretty here, I just wish the blouse had a deeper neck and/or shorter sleeves to break the red on red (on the red carpet) monotone.
one of my grandmoms had some high neck full sleeved sweaters made for her that look a lot like the ones Vidya is wearing these days. my dadi wears them under her saris during winter. y’know, the stuff only dadis can get away with.
looks like my dadi is sabya’s inner muse. sigh.
from day 1 it seemed Vidya was in some sort of “in character” appearance mode for her next movie role as .
gimmicky and over done? yes absolutely.
This fake retro thing of hers is getting unbearable now.
I read on the Vogue site that there was a Golconda Princess theme planned, but really, why would you need a “theme” to go to Cannes? Just pick some nice dresses / sarees and wear them for Gods sake. It’s a film festival, not somebody’s 60th birthday fancy dress bash.
That twee purse, the pearls, centre parted hair, prim moue on the lips- I think both the designer and his muse need to get out into the daylight a bit.
Yes. She has *always* got on my nerves a bit with her “method actress, heritage, saree, yada yada” shtick, but these recent sightings of hers are making my head implode, I don’t know why 🙂 Apologies for the rants!
Hah! Hell yeah she annoys me toox i’m surere a lot of us think that way but hey you can say it aloud. She is given this allowance of wearing inducing same ol long sleeves and unkempt hair in India or the staged look in Cannes since she is an award winning actress and all that jazz.:P
Oh lord almighty! Thanks to my phone the first sentence is all messed up.:) I meant to say..I am sure a lot of us think that way but hey you can’t say it aloud…”
God! Why is she so hell bent on trying the widowed maharani look again and again? She looks about 80! With that severe blouse, pulled back hair and those awful pearls! Even QE II looks younger than this!
She looks really really pretty. The color suits her.The jewellery is bang on.But still you feel, there is something amiss. It’s the hair and the bag. They just don’t seem to go with the whole look especially the bag.I didn’t like it one bit.
Though she looks nice but I hope she experiments a bit with her outfits. It’s like old wine in new bottle.Try Vidya.Try something new.
P.S.:Is it only me,or is something off with her eyebrows? They appear a bit harsh.
I really like Vidya but argh, I wish she’d wear a blouse which had a lovely open back or something. I like Sabya and while she looks regal and elegant at Cannes she also looks a bit matronly to me. She has beautiful hair and I wish she’d wear it down and open on the carpet. Superb makeup.
like the way the saree is draped as it should be.. like the colour too… but hey, whats with these super high neck blouses… whats she hiding? while a gown is a gown is a gown. and the same goes for sarees, there is no harm in SOME variation in the look…
I don’t want to say anything, i just cried a lake in my office pantry with a coffee!! Why? Why? And Why?
ha ha ha… i am laughing! she looks like Bindu in Hum Aapke hain kaun! horrid!
she dresses like a 70 year old granny
Vidya, Vidya, when will you learn to look glam?
what should Indian women wear ……. bikini …lol…she is perfect…..no doubt she is playing safe……any way she is better known for her acting skill rather than showing skin…..for that mallika and Sherlyn Chopra is there …….they are smart lady….we equally proud on them also……
already media created lots of drama on here dressing style in past….we must accept VIDYA the way she is………..
you are perfect vidyaji….. what ever you are going to wear….every thing is good
Sabyasachi has completely lost his mojo in this years cannes. i thcink i am finally over my crush on him. she looks like a grandmother out to cheer her grandson in his polo match. what the heck is sabya going for?
i have a figure like vidya but what she wears is just urghhh …. i dont want to see her in bandage dresses but THIS is not the answer. she spoils the beauty of saree for me. i am not sure why everyone totes her as some ambassador for indian wear because she drapes it all wrong, styles it all wrong.
+200 – for a good example, there’s Nandita Das or even Ash. Vidya, I don’t know, just seems off to me..
I am quite disappointed with the Indian designers. Except for a couple of looks of Vidya’s by Sabyasachi, no one is interested in showcasing our rich handloom heritage. This is an great platform where they can promote our handlooms and who knows it can indirectly give some leverage to our weavers, who are mostly on the brink of poverty.
Anyways most of the “Indian” looks they tried seemed forced and OTT. Thank god for people like Nandita Das, who have shown that you can look stunning in a simple, classic Indian silk saree and it doesn’t have to be designer.
she looks like royalty!
Payal and Priyanka,
Surprisingly, you didn’t talk about her crooked arm pose!
Being superficial here: I can’t believe that Aditi Rao Hydari and Vidya are abt the same age, but there is such a huge gap in their appearances. Notice I didn’t say “performances” ;o) Vidya clearly walks away with top honours for her performances, no question about that.
one day she looks like jayalalitha and in this one she looks like a widow !
Sorry but with those long sleeved blouses of hers she looks like a middle-aged “maami”.
Vidya looks outrageously stunning! Love love love…. The sari! So fresh so pretty .. D pearls n the full sleeve blouse just added to the charm!!
