Sari Style
At the Sabyasachi show, Radhika Raje Gaekwad, the queen of Baroda wore her vintage 100 year old nine-yard cotton Paitani in a nauvari drape paired with a long 11-strand necklace, jhumkis and black embroidered juttis. At such high-profile events, most tend to opt for contemporary western formals so there was a certain charm to seeing Mrs. Gaekwad opt for a very traditonal drape.
Loved it.

It’s quite lovely and she looks confident in her entire look.
she looks fabulous, love everything top to toe, but please, i thought india ceased to have kingdoms and kings and queens a while ago.
Yes, exactly this. India abolished monarchies back in 1971, so I never understand this need to call former royalty by their erstwhile titles
Just love this. Very classy and confident. Thank you for covering this, Payal.
Love. Only thing missing is a gorgeous nath!
She knocked it out of the park..would have looked gimmicky on most.
Beautiful! I think that she was the best dressed person there.

Reminds me of women in Raja Ravi Verma’s paintings…
I have seen Nauvaris but this was my first thought..
Raja Ravi Varma has painted two ladies wearing a black sari which could be a nauvari-
– Bombay Singer by Raja Ravi Varma 1893
– Maharani Chimnabai II of Baroda Raja Ravi Varma 1889
Reminds me of both my stunningly beautiful and elegant grandmothers. Love it.

We love the style but need to move on from calling people queens, nawabs and kings in India.
