Sari Style

Esha was seen at the Filmfare Awards in a red kanjivaram sari paired with emerald jewellery. This was another look that I felt was overstyled. Rule of thumb also when layering is to go one short and one long. To me, the second neckpiece was too short to be layered with the choker. Both worn together with the full sleeve blouse made the look feel stuffy. Props though for picking a handloom sari.

On an aside, I am surprised, an event in Gujarat and noone picked a Patan Patola to wear.

  1. I don’t think our movies stars or their stylists are much informed about handloom – honestly about any real fashion really. They just copy other celebrities to reflect ‘latest’ insta styles. However I was in general surprised by the number of saree sightings in general this year. Besides Deepti Naval, none of the sarees sparked much awe for me.

  2. All these BW ladies are acting like foreign celebrities who don wierd Indian clothes when in India. So, if Filmfare is in Gujarat, let’s just wear all jewelry and loudest sarees we can find!!!

    • most saree aficionados would be able to tell the difference — just like textile enthusiasts can distinguish between fabrics. though it is getting harder in recent days coz of a lot of cross-pollination of motifs.

    • I usually look at the motifs. More floral and Mughal inspired ones are Banarasi. Kanjivarams most often have religious iconography like temples or Annapakshi. Banarasi sarees have finer silk and Kanjivarams have slight heft to them. Banarasi weaving can also be done on georgette, organza or cotton silk. However, Kanjivaram is mostly silk.

There are other differences in the weaving technique and materials used.

  3. Gotta hand it to Esha to be able to carry off sultry bodacious diva and more traditional Indian looks equally well (more or less)

  4. Why almost everyone is wearing sari for Filmfare? Because its in Gujarat! Sometimes these people are acting weird. I am Gujarati and I don’t understand their logic wearing saris in filmfare. And may be thats why its looking as if they are just wearing for sake of wearing sari.

P.s. no one wearing Patan Patola and not even Bandhani.

  5. I found that last comment weird. Eh? People should wear Patan Patolas if the event is in Gujarat and Kanjis/Paithanis/Uppadas/Jamdanis if the event is in TN/Mah/AP/WB? This sounds rather like a fancy dress costume rule
