Front Row Fashion
Deepika attended the Dior Spring 2020 presentation wearing a look from the Resort 2020 collection that included a wax-print strapless dress and matching head scarf. Even though this was a very curated look meant to represent the Dior brand, I still quite liked it. She looked lovely. I wish she’d skipped the coat though.

This is a gorgeous outfit. I have a bit of a struggle getting on board with this being a Dior outfit though as it’s super reminiscent of the Nigerian fabrics and traditional outfit silhouettes. I doubt many of the local brands or designers there would get a fraction of what one would pay for the Dior outfit.
It’s not the first time Dior has done this and won’t be the last…
YES!
terribly styled! but then again what can one expect from her stylist! the said, this collection is already not going too well with the media here! she looks like she’s shooting for OM SHANTI OM – sponsored by Dior!
looks like her PR machinery is out on full force! every negative comments has a thundering thumbs down from her minions! padmavati – take a chill!
Ugh this compulsive need to wear ALL the things at once is so so so dated. Maximalism is not something everyone can pull off effortlessly. I’d lose the head scarf, necklace and replace the boots with something more classic like pumps. Deepika looks great in wavy hair let down so that would be my pick as well. But this is a huge improvement over her recent styles and though not perfect, she still looks fresh and that’s something to applaud.
She looks fresh because she has washed her hair, that’s it, that’s making all the difference.
That’s not what I meant at all. Her make up looks fresh. Yes she changed her hair but that’s not what I was referring to.
I personally don’t like the dress but I don’t mind how it is styled here including the coat. It helps break the overwhelming print (for me atleast!) she looks lovely here though
Lungi dance lungi dance! Can’t unsee
Ok
lovely print, she is glowing… agree with you that the coat addition is a spoiler
Umm no. I hate it when the design houses appropriate culture. Deepika, just because it is a Dior does not mean that you have to wear this print. I would have expected a celebrity of African descent to do justice to it. This is an ugly dress in terms of pattern/colour & culturally in sensitive. So wrong on so many levels.
Social media and the internet have really contributed towards the amplification of uninformed and half baked opinions. Tch tch.
Please don’t be patronizing. I have my opinion just as you my have yours on this dress which btw you have not shared.
I don’t think it’s mandatory for only African descendants to wear this print. If so, how would any local print/weave reach the international market? DP looks great in that print
The look is not just too curated, it looks forced and costumey! She looks beautiful, though!
At the end of the day, I guess that’s what they are going for. To create a memorable appearance.
Umm… It’s anything but memorable!
She looked so good on her Instagram pics of this shoot.. why do you guys pick the most dowdy of pictures
its not their fault its deepika and her team that makes her pictures out of this world but when we see the real pictures then we know about the reality of that look 😛
Well a picture will only show what’s captured of real.. can’t create a face or skin by any amount of skill.
Errrr, heard of filters? Photoshop?
Lol… are you serious? Photoshoping/filtering instagram pix before posting is a common practice of celebs. It’s only fair that PnP generally posts public appearance pictures here for more neutral judgments
Original ankara prints are more pretty n vibrant. Agree with above commentators!
She looks beautiful! Look at her. I actually like this outfit…she carries it off really well. I think the coat gives the flowy dress some structure.
On the appropiration bit – not sure they selected Deepika to represent Nigerian fabrics per se. It might have been her own choice and she does really well in it. As far as Dior fleecing the actual producers of these prints , now that is crony capitalism at its finest.
I really like her in a look after SO LONG! Gorgeous!
OMG! Deepika has changed her hairstyle and i am more excited that the oil has finally departed her hair. The rest i don’t care.. She looks like her cocktail days
this looks like a movie costume with all the shabang that is going on over all
Go to Château Rouge in Paris and you’ll see better versions of this print. What is so Dior about this?
Must admit that Deepika’s sartorial choices have been failing at an alarming pace
It’s an interesting look on her… I would do say with those chains.
I find the print drab – no disrespect meant to the Nigerian culture.
However, hoooooly cow – that face! that smile!
Wax print ? You mean batik?
Yes, wax print on a traditional ankara is done using the Indonesian batik technique.
Overtly styled and curated to the T but I somehow still prefer this over her recent outings in India. I’m just glad the chipkoo hair is gone and her face looks less made-up.
Mommy says we used to have a bedsheet like this!
Ha ha ha..so true! This actually made my day!
Oops mommy had very bad taste in bedsheets.
She looks so fresh-faced…..really nailed the makeup.
Before sounding off on everything and getting excited to use “cultural appropriation” everywhere, maybe it would be useful for people to do some research on what went behind creating this collection/ how it came about.
I keep seeing people referring to the design as Nigerian, when in fact Chiuri collaborated with a myriad of artists and historians on this collection. It is largely inspired by Morocco and Africa , not just Nigeria. She worked with Pathé Ouédraogo a designer from Burkina Faso, African-American artist Mickalene Thomas and Bristish-Jamaican designer Grace Wales Bonner. She also worked with African artisans on both the textiles throughout the collection and the set design.
And as far as why she even went to that point of inspiration in the first place, well ONE of the reasons is because Yves Saint Laurent, who was Dior’s successor and at the helm in the early days of Dior, was actually born and brought up in Algeria. There are many other reasons why she designed this collection, but this was just one example.
All that said, I think Deepika looks phenomenal – though I always love to see her with her hair down!
Thank you for that comment! I learnt something!
Calm down DP PR!
Thanks for sharing this background – it’s lovely to hear the design house worked with artists and artisans from where the inspiration came from. You’re right about reactions being quick to jump to conclusions without the appropriate research (including my earlier comment). Have a lovely day!
You too! 🙂
Thank you for sharing this. It pretty much explains Dior’s point of view and how painstakingly, they have tried to not be culturally insensitive. That being said, I would like to urge whoever is interested to also read the view points of various African fashion bloggers who did not share Dior’s point of view. For those who are not sure what cultural appropriation means – here is the definition. “Cultural appropriation, at times also phrased cultural misappropriation,is the adoption of elements of one culture by members of another culture. This can be controversial when members of a dominant culture appropriate from disadvantaged minority cultures.” All that being said, this is African fashion right from the African print, silhouette and even the presence of a head scarf. She was not a right person to be wearing this. An African celebrity- yes. Now if this were an event at one of the African country’s consulates – then yes. There is a time and a place to be wearing clothes from different cultures (even if if the design label is supposedly a culturally sensitive Dior. Hope I have made my viewpoint clear.
The colour looks refreshing on her. A deviation from the usual colours she normally prefers. She looks good. But I feel there is too much going on with the busy prints in the dress, those layered necklaces, coat etc. In her Instagram pics she is also seen wearing a thigh high boots. Too curated.
