Couple Talk: Part Deux

Ranbir and Alia seemed to have accidently (or possibly on purpose) coordinated with the hosts of their Diwali party (Saif and Kareena) with Ranbir in black and white and Alia wearing a red Manish Malhotra lehenga. Between the border and color, I was quite reminded of this Sabyasachi lehenga which was a whole lot more finished out than the one Alia wore. The outfit as a while felt bare. I also don’t get why such an established designer like Mr. Malhotra, every now and then, churn out designs that feel so very Sabya.

  1. In my grandmother’s colony, a bunch of sweet older ladies, a lot of them widows, would gather on someone’s porch soaking in the late afternoon sun and chit chatting. This draping of Alia’s reminds me distinctly of them. Loose blouses, unpinned pallus falling off every which way, bare necks, and no one to photograph or judge them for they were past their prime. On them, the draping somehow felt ok, even comforting. On Alia, it’s a different story altogether. Lovely lehenga and dupatta though.

  2. It feels like Manish just can’t get over the fact that Sabya is a much better designer than him and so he tries his level best to make his own versions of Sabyasachi designs. But falls flatly on his face since Sabyasachi is miles ahead of him in every sense! His adage is if ” if you can’t beat them join them” but sorry Manish this just isn’t working !

  3. This is no way special to Sabya or Manish. This is a very common design available all
Over India – silk/ satin fabric and golden border. Please let’s not forget that beautiful Indian clothes and designs are not due to these designers and have existed over thousands of years evolving with time.

  4. This reminds you of Sabya? This is hardcore “buy material from Lajpat Nagar and have it stitched by local tailor/boutique” vibes

(To clarify, nothing wrong with that, that’s probably the best and most cost effective way to get an outfit you like – but didn’t think there was anything Sabya like about this)

  5. The issue lies also with these established actors like Alia who mindlessly wear such designs that’s very clearly reminiscent of other designer’s work.

  6. Is dupion silk normally used in good quality clothes? Isn’t that the material that is used for silk throw pillow covers?

I like that palla at the front – It’s not something I would wear – Alia’s minimal look salvages the outfit somewhat.

  7. This outfit didn’t look like Sabya from any angle. The sloppy finish of the blouse and not so prefect fit of the lehenga!! Was surprised to know that it’s even a MM outfit ?
