In Gucci
Alia walked the closing ceremony of Cannes wearing a custom creation from Gucci that she is a brand ambassador for. I think the flex that her and the stylist were going for was, look we got Gucci to create us a lehenga except that rhinestone GG logo along the border and the mesh design was tacktastic! Also, we have so many amazing designers who make lehengas way better so I never get this need to get an international label to create an Indian garment.

If you don’t call it a saree, or lehenga or any Indian ethnic wear, it’s a gorgeous outfit.
i love the hair and make up and the tones in Alia.
Sorry, it really isn’t a gorgeous outfit by any stretch of the imagination.
She does represent the brand and they did create something special for her keeping up with her heritage which they haven’t done before so that is quite nice. Alia looked beautiful and she has a very sweet smile. I liked the saree too. It looked elegant yet very clean which is Alia’s signature vibe.
Her hair and make up is on point. Love this look
I absolutely love this look . Absolutely on point . Plus she is a brand ambassador of Gucci so why not wear Gucci ?
First question: why are they calling it a saree?
Second, I get it’s an honor for Alia to get a design house like Gucci to customize a quasi-Indian outfit for her, but kuchh toh sharam karo behen! Why settle for a sub-standard lehenga that any darzi in any small town can run up? Why not blow Indian designers out of the water by channeling your strengths– exquisite cuts, fabrics, couture tailoring — to create something seriously novel and pathbreaking instead of this upholstery lookalike from a shady house?
They are not calling it a saree. Gucci called it “custom Gucci gown with embroidered crystals in a monogram GG pattern”….. everyone else said it is a reimagination of saree. Listen, we can fuss over technicality or look at the big pictures. There was a time luxury fashion houses never considered India as a potential market nor gave any thoughts to Indian celebrities to have global power to promote their brands. Look how much things have changed. There’s nothing shameful or bad about Indian stylists and celebrities continuing to grow their influence in global fashion scene where now custom creations are possible regularly. I remember Sonam and Rhea’s interview after she walked in J.P. Gaultier for the first time. Rhea said she emailed like numerous designers and only J.P. Gaultier and The Row responded with a gown. Not everything is a negative. Granted, everyone may not like the design. Fair, but its a bit over the top to think a luxury fashion house catering to Indian heritage and working together with an Indian styling team is worst thing ever.
YMMV but the point is, if India is such a huge potential market and Alia so important to them, and given the powers involved, why not give it the respect all deserve and come up with something that’s more arresting than an exploded mosquito net? My limited point is that the outfit is lazy, disrespectful and does not do anyone a favor.
Why is it an honor? All it actually is is capitalism. European fashion houses have seen the spending potential in India and are trying to attract Indians and cater to them. It is the capitalism version oh quid pro quo. As for the outfit, Gucci started the trend of flashy logo wear, so, whether you like it or not, they are true to themselves. Personally, not a fan of the outfit, but Alia looked super nice, as always.
Kuch bhi not Gucci
Looks very very tacky It is like wanting to expose but not quite show skin and so the lining shows through in a so not nice way
Plus one to the unnecessary logo obsession and going for ridiculous outfits as this
It is so wannabe and major head scratch as to why somebody who is already a star would want to go for this awful, strange choice. But of course because it’s Alia
Not a cannes worthy outfit for sure.. and btw does nothing for her.. MEH
Ughhh
I’m no logo fan but c’mon the GG is emblematic of the house’s DNA. She’s their global ambassador so if they’re going to make her a saree for the first time (or whatever ethnic outfit you wanna call this) it obviously has to represent them. The nude with crystal somehow doesn’t come across as ‘been there, done that’ but actually looks clean and refreshing. Her hair and makeup as always is majorly carrying this look.
On anyone else, I would agree with your comments and in general, I also agree with your observations about Rhea getting carried away with these looks. But considering Alia IS the brand ambassador for Gucci, I don’t mind this so much. I feel the starting point here was not to wear a lehenga, but to wear Gucci for their association and then trying to get them to customize something according to her roots. I don’t see how this garment can be functional beyond this carpet, but in this particular outing it works. The simple and clean finishing touches here suit Alia. She looks much more like herself and comfortable as compared to any other other looks she’s done. That makes all the difference. So overall, I like this on her.
I totally love this look . She looks so sexy and hair and makeup make her look alive for a change . Yes , I despise logos on bags , shoes , clothes but here you have to really zoom in to notice it just sort of becomes a part of the embellishments .
It looks like inner wear and petticoat especially in that skin tone shade. Nowadays, anyway Indian designer Lehengas also anyways look like Bralet and petticoat anyways.
She will go to the Cannes coastline and proceed to catch fish with her “custom creation”. How utilitarian. And perfect example of upcycling.
Haha
I absolutely LOVE this look! Why is it a negative that an international design house creates an Indian inspired outfit for a global event? It’s a big positive – shows how far the Indian market and Indian presence has come and how India’s soft power is gaining traction.
I also have to say the outfit is stunning and I haven’t seen an Indian designer create anything similar or at least with this finesse. The finish is impeccable, no puckering, excellent choice of base fabric, very sharp cutting so no rough edges visible, and perfection in matching Alia’s skin color to give it that seamless nude look. (We just saw what a shoddy job MM did for Aishwarya’s pleat-less sari in a sloppy silk fabric, so let’s not assume Indian designers will always do justice to an Indian outfit)
This look will have polarising opinions and that’s fine. Credit to Rhea, Alia and the House of Gucci for taking this risk.
I generally cannot stand logos on clothes but the way it has been done here is the opposite of tacky
She was going to wear Gucci anyway so them making something custom for her that has some Indian inspiration doesn’t feel like it is taking away from Indian designers
This is my favorite look of the Indian celebs at Cannes…it’s interesting without being ridiculous. And the hair and makeup are lovely
Plus she is wearing the look as opposed to the look wearing her
True that making a lehenga/saree should be left to craftsmen show know how to make it well, having said that, say what you will, but for a giant like Gucci taking an opportunity and making an attempt to dress their Indian brand ambassador in an outfit that has a hint of Indian roots and giving it their own spin is commendable, as for Alia, she carried it off well!
She wore the best of designers for her Cannes debut and yet nothing was a knockout. Miss the days she was styled by Ami and wore the clothes and not the other way round.
She looks smouldering & glamorous for a change . The makeup and hair are playing a big part in elevating this outfit .Would be great for a cocktail party , on the red carpet it’s just a skirt & bra top with a stole . Only Alia mentions it as an “ interpretation “ of a saree but I don’t see any connection as such . Either way I think she looks great & and craftsmanship is beautiful
Loved this look. The hair , makeup and understated makeup elevated this look. I do not understand how one considers this tacky compared to the horrible black gown that Aishwarya wore covered by cape that looked like duve off someone’s bed !
So what if its not Sabya, Tarun or any other indian design. Its Gucci damn it. Eat it !
this woman is the definition of beige, she washes everything out. insipid!
Right up Alia’s dressing alley – insipid, risk-less, one-note and just overall really boring.
Very very tacky and sleazy! Comes across as desperate. And just to make a “talking point’ out of it they came up with the saree gimmick even though Gucci calls it a gown. It just goes to show fashion has now become “how to make this moment viral” than about the craft and the art/style/panache of the person carrying it. The hair and make up are great though but sign again this is just an attempt to create a social media moment than an actual fashion moment
