Ms. Kapoor kick started Cannes on Saturday wearing a shimmery NorBlack NorWhite sari which I have to admit was quite an unconventional pick. Taking a break from shoots on Sunday to prep for her red carpet, she resumed today with a series of looks that included all her favorites.

Question is, do you have a favorite here?

  1. Strictly okay, nothing Cannes worthy!
The Two blue pastel dresses look like she is on a private vacation rather than international award function.
Yellow Boho Indian look is like bollywood song shot.
So much for thinking unconventional and out of the box.

  2. Seeing some of the comments on the previous post about Sonam, I think I might be one of the few ones that really liked the sari look. The AJSK is also very unusual and unlike what one would expect from them. Sonam likes drama in her clothes, and continued with that here. I like that better than blending in the sea of expected gowns and dresses.

    • Dude thank you! the people just talking sh*t on here: she has been featured on multiple blogs and websites here in LA saying how epic she looked. I’m going to go ahead and say she looked amazing..Cannes is about standing out and doing drama..not going the boring route!

    • Ruchi, I agree with you. I forone loved her saree look. Its fresh and stands out in a sea of gowns. (My favorite looks of her are the divine cobalt blue Rimzim Dadu structured saree and the Anaika khanna peach dhoti saree with pearl choker, so I’m a little biased). The Jani-Khosla look is also appropriate for the French riviera though I did find the turban look a bit theatrical. But kudos to her for the unconventional picks and showcasing Indian designers. People here behave as if every Cannes appearance has to be a gown. There;s no a uniform FYI.

  3. None! Sonam pls don’t take yourself too seriously. Stick to the script and make fashion fun. For the first time Abujani is relatively better than an Anamika Khanna! What’s up with the red and yellow anyway? It’s a total WTHeyyyy!!

  4. I have to agree that she is the only one who gave all different outfits rather than gowns all the times. Thumbs up for versatility!

  5. I don’t understand what people don’t like. The fact that she is always choosing the unconventional and excelling at it or that she is just Sonam Kapoor. Each of her look was different-no minis,no ball gowns and yes,a saree and great Indian designers. The fashion scenarioin India post-Sonam is very judgmental(which, btw, wasn’t this enlightened pre-Sonam).Our world was revolving around Manish Malhotra and Co.Aishwarya was spotted in Yanina Couture only after Sonam introduced the ballet dancing gown from the designer earlier.Anamika Khanna, before being on the list of Kareena, was spotted by Sonam.and yes,Print maverick-Masaba Gupta’s first saree was worn by Sonam. Her first appearance at Cannes was in a Jean-Paul Gaultier. So,be a little thankful that she is actually taking risks and being a queen at that.
P.S-If anybody deserves kudos for having retained aesthetics over all these years even without experimentation,it’s Nandita Das.

    • That Anamika Khanna is horrendous and yes she is taking herself too seriously. Commentators have every right to like or dislike a look. No one is denying the fashion risks that she’s taking or has taken earlier. But risks are risks and one fails. Theres no need to feel bad if her looks are not liked.

I recall other Indian stars wearing those designers before Sonam appeared on the scene. Stop the Columbusing of Sonam – she did not discover what already existed.

I have to agree that these looks are more like costumes when compared to the other photoshoots for attendees at Cannes – too curated, so much effort for little ‘wow’ factor.

      Thank you!

Our girl looks absolutely fabulous. What I LOVE about her is that she retains a little bit of Sonam in every look. She goes outside of her comfort zone and takes style to a new level – but there is always a little Sonam in it. That is what a truly stylish person is capable of doing. I am so glad she never conforms to what is typically considered appropriate or red-carper or resort. Each one of these outfits is stellar! How can you not love them??? My personal fave- the Anamika Khanna. LOVE.

    • It sounds like you weren’t paying attention to what celebs were wearing pre-Sonam. The thing with Sonam is that she’s been shouting from the rooftop that SHE is the fashionista and SHE introduced all the celebs to gowns and such and I think people are really starting to believe her tales. This is not the case. Please see Kangana Raunat, Neha Duphia and to some extent, that girl who’s seen at every party I cant remember the name of (she was in a girl band in 00’s).

Sonams style early on was literally either copying the Olsen twins or copying the runway styles to the T…so much for a fashionista.

  6. OMG… hahahahahaha

I can’t stop laughing at Sonam . She is taking herself too seriously . So contrived and Costumey.

Chose the best pic for the Sari look? The Sari during her interview looked CHEAP and the Tshirtish blouse looked hilarious.
Mint doesn’t go with her Tan Skin and the Yellow one is hilarious.
This has got to be the worst year for Sonam.
    Rhea sucks as stylist

  7. True to her form Sonam tried different apparel but was not able to deliver on all:

AJSK looks good for the shoot with the background and all (first time I think I liked AJSK somewhere).
Apala (yellow & red) looks straight out of Rekha’s closet but Rekha used to own that look, failed try by Sonam.
Saree Look – Blouse doesn’t go well, light silver blouse might have looked better.
Suhani – Had potential but the makeup & hair were too strong for the whimsical blue green dress.

    • I thought that dress was Suhani Pittie also, based on the caption in the last row of pictures, but it now seems that those are all credits for the jewelry. The mint dress is by Masaba (which is noted in the tags but not on the pic).

  8. The saree look was a flop for me. It Didn’t look fashionable at all leave alone high fashion. The others were nice. Especially loved the Abu Jni and masaba outfit. The turban one seemed interesting.

  9. I actually prefer all these looks to her red carpet which was underwhelming. Yes, not all these looks are completely successful and I think the posing is partly to blame but it’s different and there are various elements of interest in the looks. I love the mint green look the best.

  10. The mustard red one some how reminds of Rekha of 90s , in some movie or magazine cover πŸ™‚
    Very old and boring look.
I like the pastel blue green jumpsuit kinds but rest all are jus bleh!

  11. You guys have obviously picked the most flattering pics of her in all the above outfits. All the pics posted by you are from either Sonam or Rhea’s instagram. They have obviously been edited .These pics are not what she looked like in most of them. Especially not in the Saree, yellow pants and white petticoat outfits. The bias here is so obvious. You haven’t given the same benefit of one single photo-shopped picture to any of the other celebs. Why don’t you put up more pictures of the outfits? They are almost WTHey.
Sonam usually stuns in Cannes but this time she disappoints. She is also looking tired and low this time. But she does look stunning in the Suhani Pittie outfit. Thumbs up to that one.

    • Actually I was expecting this .
They were quite good at finding the most unflattering pictures of Aishwarya though .
But then we all have our favourites.
I love sonam for her sense of adventure . But I was expecting a lot more then the ellie saab gown. She actually has now her own standards to live up to .

      • Not only that, they posted only 2 Deepika photos from the Red Carpet (the green gown). The other photos from Deepika were from low resolution photos that L’oreal account. But for Sonam, they picked the best photos from the RC.

  12. I thought Ahiwarya’s Day looks were bad until I saw Sonam! These are all hideous. She thinks she’s the world’s biggest fashionista so can get away with wearing anything unfortunately for her thats not the case. These looks are all one worse then the next.I don’t get why none of the indian actresses see how their hollywood counter parts are dressing there and just copy them! Those girls look fresh, trendy and normal. These woman are either trying too hard or haven’t got a clue!

  13. Looks like she had fun by not taking the rule book too seriously. Apart from the Mustard-Red everything else looks fine, You go girl!

On a second thought, a pony tail would have better suited the Pastel Blue outfit.

  14. I liked all the looks. It’s not just the clothes, but how well somebody carries them of and Sonam wears all of them well. Can’t believe that’s AKSJ. I was like, what? No Gota?? No shimmer and shine?? No 3d??

  15. I’d really like the Kapoor sisters to leave the sari alone. That mogra palazzo one, that denim Masaba one, and now these hologram/psychedelic and crop trouser ones. Ugh.

  16. I love all of them!! If i had to chose one tht i liked less, itΒ΄s the flowery caftan one, the dress underneath is not really doing it for me.

Sonam & Rhea know fashion, that for sure!!

  17. I really really liked the saree look. Nobody else could have carried it off. Other outfits are just about fine and definitely worth applause her spunk and confidence to experiment. I’ll take Sonam’s sartotial diversity any day over usual cookie cutter barbiedoll gowns.

Me too… to me it felt a very westernized version of the Saree… And beautiful eye makeup… seemed like a very sea inspired look for the beach… I don’t know why people take her so seriously… she clearly has fun dressing up…

  18. Love all the looks except for the Apala (the colour scheme is bleh!) Sonam tries new silhouettes and features Indian designers on a world stage, which is something others don’t do and it deserves praise and acknowledgement. She pushed the fashion envelope forward in Bollywood and is still doing it. Experimentation is her thing, so credit where its due. Keep doing you, girl!

  19. I’m just here for the fashion – I do detect that the bloggers are Sonam fans but that ought to be put aside. Overall, I like the fact that these looks are interesting and innovative. Don’t agree with the commenter “leave the sari alone” – what’s wrong with experimentation? I don’t mind the norblack norwhite sari but I think it may not be the right pick for Cannes. Like a lot of commentators I agree that this is one of the first AJSK looks that I like – so fresh and breezy and perfect for the seaside. I’m also not a huge masaba fan but I like the crisp turquoise outfit. I’m usually a die hard anamika fan but I dislike the colours and embroidery of the yellow and red – too costumey. Overall, interesting and innovative, and I like folks who go against the grain a bit.

  20. First two sets of pics are filtered so can not exactly comment on makeup! That yellow n red outfit by Anamika Khanna has African feel to it. Head gear n bright colours of the outfit are giving ankara-print vibe. I quite like it! Can some id mint palazzo saree outfit? Wish Rheson had such type of collection! In context to above comment(s), last set of pics have the name tags of jewellery brands/designers n are not the designers of the outfits.

  21. I can’t stop laughing ….. how absurd are these outfits . And P and P why don’t you have an opinion? In trying to be unconventional sonam has turned into looking hilarious. Come back home

  22. I personally love that Sonam takes risks consistently and isn’t tied to some kind of dress code or mainstream/western conceptions of dress, even at Cannes. But as somebody mentioned above, a potential consequence of taking a “risk” is that sometimes you miss, which I think she did with some of these. And more than the outfits, I think some of the styling/finishing is what let her down. The Anamika Khanna would have looked so much better without the turban (and that pink eyeshadow) – a flowy/flower child hairstyle could have really elevated it. Same with the drape on the saree, as well as the blouse. I’m a bit disappointed because usually her looks at Cannes really work. A part of me thinks she jinxed it (or at least spoke too soon) when she made that comment about not receiving criticism at Cannes.

  23. Thank God.I thought I was the only one who saw the obvious bias.

No opinion when Sonam looks hilarious yet runs to post low resolution unedited pics of other celebs.
This is your blog I get it. But if you plan on insulting other celebs while praising even the worse look of your fav then you have no right to post pics of the ones you don’t like and degrade them.
I am pretty sure Sonam pays you for all this.

It is obvious with the kind of words you used for Aishwarya and Deepika while remaining mum on Sonam’s debacle.
The Elie Saab gown had fit issue around the bust and these hilarious looks above are right out of WTHEY category.

  24. Mark my words….some years down the line…fashion in india will be BS and AS…before sonam nd after sonam….
The criticism just adds to it…
To all the people in sonam’s team…be proud of yourself….

  25. There you go again, i’m so glad people are noticing this bias because it disappoints me as a reader. Its quite convenient and small to never have an opinion when Sonam disappoints or fails; while a subtle-snooty note ready for other actresses. Either don’t remark with that tone at all or be fair to everyone who disappoints.

Coming to the clothes, I love that saree, its such a fun take! I don’t know why people are throwing such hate on it. I think its a great twist and she pulls that off well. And I do quite like the Abu-Sandeep drape, its gorgeous and perfect with the seaside shoot. (This is honestly the first piece of cloth I have found gorgeous from them, its so subtle and soft – I would’ve never guessed its from them)

Regarding the bohemian look, it screams REKHA and not in a good way.
    The Masaba drape is snooze.

Overall, even with the gowns she’s worn both days. I find not a single look something that i’ll remember or want to recreate. I guess its because she’s been busy shooting for her film this year; its been a low key year for her at Canne – and hey, thats okay! She’s a gorgeous person and its fine to not have a great run once in a while πŸ™‚

  28. Oh dear, it looks like she has made a poor spectacle of herself…these pictures are plain comical. The worst are definitely the Anamika Khanna and the Masaba. We all knew Masaba is for clowns but why AK?!
I like the NorBlack NorWhite saree, it flows like water.

  29. Lol to the comments. The looks are OTT but I will applaud her for taking the risks especially that yellow and red turban look straight out of Alladin. I thought it was just me but I guess everyone thinks HHC girls have their favorites. I know for sure they are biased towards Sonam n Twinkle. No matter how crazy they dress HHC girls thinks they look fab and even have readymade excuses for them like they like comfort clothes or she has leg issue so she wears those ugly platforms, blah blah.

  31. I actually like the AJSK one the best (can’t believe it myself) followed by the Masaba jumpsuit but the hairstyle is seriously stupid. The other 2 outfits, the less said the better. I think ‘overconfidence’ is what happened with Sonam this year.
