WLIFW Spring 09: The Round-Up (Part One)

The theme of Anjana Bhargav’s collection was ‘Structured Deconstruction’ and was evident throughout the collection. She played with drapes, cuts, silhouettes, hem-lines… The color palette was too somber for a spring collection (for us anyway) but there were certain pieces with metallic influences that were very well crafted.
Barring a few pieces, this collection wasn’t very memorable.

High-waisted wide-leg pants, very feminine blouses, sharp pencil skirts and grecian dresses made up the collection. The color palette stayed mostly muted with a burst of orange or blue here and there. The more abstract and busy prints weren’t so impressive. And while florals continued to make their presence felt, the duo did use them well!
The separates were well crafted but it is their evening wear that no doubt will end up on many a celebrity in the coming days. Sure, its nothing that we haven’t seen before but perhaps thats where their forte lies, in safe, classic evening wear silhouettes…

Menswear always throws us for a loop. We appreciate the creativity but do we see commercial viability, not necessarily! We appreciate the craftsmanship, the play on colors and cuts. But it doesn’t have the commercial appeal for us because we don’t see it translate well into pret for the average joe.
But then again, like we said… Menswear always throws us for a loop.

Ritu Kumar uses beautiful colors, beautiful prints and beautiful fabrics to update what is traditional Indian craftsmanship and give it a very contemporary twist by way of this collection. Love the exaggerated key-hole necklines as well as the embellished ones! Loved the earthy color palette too.
The silhouettes were easy and flowy and a nod was given to the metallic trend by way of tasteful embellishments. An out and out commercial collection; every piece could go off the runway and straight into any of our closets.

This collection too did color in a very subdued manner; there were muted shades of peaches, creams, olives and blues on the runway. The designer really played with textures in her collection and embellishments were used sparingly.
The evening wear seemed to have Japanese influences with its wide belted accents at the waist, and which included pieces that were very well crafted and interesting. The dresses were young and casual but nothing that held your attention. What did however, was the swim-wear.
She too included the wide-legged trousers in her collection which seems to be the strong trend for summer!

The menswear was regular. Casual. But unimaginative. The womenswear was mostly casual, breezy, and summery with the color palette being soft. Nothing impressive. But what was, were the pieces shown towards the end. Kitschy graphic prints on metallic silhouettes were stunning! We can see it working equally off the runway and editorially. Barring those few pieces, unimpressive.

Pinks, greens, blues and metallic shimmer made up Surily’s color palette for her collection. She too continues to be influenced with Grecian drapes as was evident in many of her dresses! Also, she seems to have interpreted the classic flapper dress in her own way. We saw some interesting dresses with layers and a play on fringe detail. Florals too continue to make their presence felt and using the ombre technique on floral prints gave her pieces a fresh vibe. She definitely had some interesting pieces.
A collection that was very youthful, feminine and flirty.

you guys are a lot nicer than I would have been, but I generally agree
also, I have to note that a lot of the trends off of the NY, London and Paris fashion weeks have not really been reflected here…
If this is what we expect for spring’09, its not very optimistic. Only Ritu Kumar’s collection stands out…the rest, quite pathetic. The clothes look jaded, maybe the designers are fatigued after doing multiple fashion weeks. No key trends, colors or silhouettes stand out. Everone seems to have mish-mashed previous collections and presented a big ‘yawn’.
But I would like to compliment P&P for giving a good roundup of the fashion week:)
