In Sabyasachi

Holi may have just gotten over, but seems like Vidya, who was spotted at an event in a Sabysachi anarkali, is still in colorful spirits. Loved her neck-up and those kolhapuri sandals, but the anarkali felt too overwhelming on her.

    • I agree. I think she looks great despite the OTT outfit. She wore it amazingly well. Sometimes, ppl look good because of their outfit and sometimes the outfit looks good because of the wearer. In this case it is the latter !

  1. ufff, outfit is too busy. i can imagine some of the comments here – circus tent, mandap, etc. by the way, how does the bottom part of the anarkali billow up by itself?

  2. I’m curious…how long is her “Sabya phase” going to last??

Or has she signed a lifetime contract to wear Sabya?

Afterall, anyone would get tired of wearing the same thing over and over (although in different colors)…..I would refuse to budge out of bed if someone gave me similar thing to wear over and over…

    • I don’t understand. This IS a different look. She wears saris most of the time. If we don’t know the designer was Sabya, we wouldn’t be complaining about her “Sabya phase”. It could be just about anyone who designs Indian ethnic wear. If you are going to wear ethnic, it can only be saris or salwars. What else? Don’t we wear jeans and t-shirts every single day?

      • I agree. I dont understand why people have something dislike the Sabya+Vidya combination when her clothes and even her Sabya sarees are so wide in variety. She wears different types of Sarees from Sabya, she wears Maxis, she wears salwars, anarkali and what not.
I prefer this variety a lot more than a Gucci short dress on one day and a Valentino super short dress on another.

      • Except there’s a wide variety of saris and salwars to experiment with. She sticks to the same old same old. Jeans and T’s can get boring but not saris-salwars with the wide variety available in India especially.

  3. I’d rather be wearing Sabya everyday than MM. I like the top portion and dupatta though. But I do agree the outfit as a whole is too overwhelming on Vidya. Thank god for the minimal makeup

  4. Every time I see the title “In Sabyasachi”, I know its going to be Vidya Balan – talk about predictable.
Isnt she bored of the same stuff all the time. I think criticism of her pre-Sabya style really got to her and she refuses to try anything new.

  5. I like this look a lot.

I think a lot of people forget that she is young because she always dresses in really classic traditional pieces. She’s in her early 30s. That’s like the 20s of this generation! She can wear bright colors like this with ease and look fantastic in them! I love how fun the outfit, especially around Holi.

As for the complaint of her always wearing Sabyasachi, so what? Here is a woman who understands that she has the typical Indian body of wide hips, full bust, and relatively short torso; and she realizes the clothing that works best on her is Indian clothing because those silhouettes suit her the best. So she found someone who makes clothing that fits her well and appeals to her sense of style. Don’t we all have our one go-to-stop-shop? Sabyasachi just happens to be hers.

People seem to forget that once upon a time, Vidya’s body was the body of Indian women in cinema (remember Mumtaz, anyone?). Just because the latest world wide trend is towards the tall and skinny, it doesn’t mean everyone is.

If there’s one complaint I have about this look, it’s that I find her hairstyle too severe. I agree that it should be up, but I don’t like how it’s been so tightly pulled back.

  6. I think the outfit would still be okay had the duppatta been on the lighter side. The heavy anarkali with a heavier duppatta was too much on the petite Vidya. She still looks goregous neck up, no doubt. Graceful and pretty as ever.

  7. Saw pics on diff site. She didn’t look good from behind and the sandals are wedges those didn’t look good either – overall a very unpolished look.

  8. Vidya is a beautiful real woman with curves. Agreed. What I cannot understand is the constant need to wear such long, tedious, billowy material. Short kurtis/ kurtas with patialas or shararas will not look bad either (kind of like what Jacqueline (Masaba creation) wore but maybe with more structured churidars/bottoms). Vidya seems to be drowing in this clothes tent! That said, I like the OTT color combo, its kind of festive!

  9. I love itttt!! For those not liking it, yes it is OTT, but when have Indian designers not made OTT outfits??! And its all about who carries the OTT outfit well, with grace and here Vidya does so successfully, full points to her!!!

And with the minimal make up n accessories, the attention is bang on to the outfit, with a so Sabya n yet again stunning!

Also to note, the colours in the anarkali are far less than the colours manish arora has on his saris, when they can be accepted as kitsch n blah blah, so can this!

  10. I wouldn’t mind being in her position and having my pick of Sabyasachis! – lucky girl. However I do think this design is swamping her somewhat, she looks great in sarees not so much in these anarkallis.

  11. She looks really pretty here.
Why don’t we just let her be in her Sabyas? Fashion is about having fun sure…but it’s also about being comfortable in your skin. Everyone doesn’t have to be eclectic. Stylish has many forms.

  12. She should get rid of her hairstyle: the boring centre-parted, tightly pulled back into a bun do that makes her look like a granny!

  13. I like how Vidya looks however does the anarakali have to balloon up like that? Wish it was made of a flowy fabric that did not lend so much volume. If you are wide as she is (and many of us) why would you want to wear anarkali’s that add to that width? Beats me.

  14. Actually, it looks good on her. It may not have looked half as good on any other actress. She has her on style, and if she loves it and is not imitating someone else, good for her!

  15. i think she looks lovely. i’m from the UK and on the asian high street we mostly get MM type knock offs which is getting boring. so seeing something like this is fresh to the eyes!!

  16. Agree with Lolita above. What’s with wearing only Sabya? When the other celebrities wear Leger on repeat ocassiona, the same crowd goes all out on them. Why so much flak on Priyanka Chopra then? Based on some of the commentators view ~ it’s about what the celebrities prefer, according to what suits their body and comfortableness. So why not give the same leverage for short dresses and minis on PC and Malaika? Also, there is hardly anything to comment in terms of accesories or styling when it comes to Vidya. I feel, the only way she found her way into this blog is through Sabya. Hahaha.

  17. i too am in the lolita camp…..TIRED OF SEEING VIDYA N RANI in sabya outfits.there are so many other designers who make indian outfits for indian bodies.why stick to the same stuff everytime.i simply love indian by anamika k, tanvi kedia, monisha jaising…etc….n i think she will look fab in them.one can always experiment with colors n cuts…..n give anarkalis a break.

  18. come on vidya! surprise me with a light yellow chikan work salwar kameez and jimikis 🙂

I dont care what designer she wears. The only suggestion i have for her is, since her body is curvy, why wear clothes that bluge out and makes you look bigger and wider?

  19. yawn! does sabyasachi have to design a new outfit everyday for her? this is sabyasachi fatigue. I’m sure he too would want her to experiment with other designers more just so that his designs dont get too boring to look at!
