In Sabyasachi

When we first saw the Sabya check sari on Rani, we had mixed feelings about it. Vidya wore a yellow/black one today and we’ve got to say she looked lovely. You know we love seeing women wear mogra and Vidya seals it for us by wearing one.

    • Auntijie ? Why ? Isnt that a little harsh.

In your opinion only old ladies wear saris ? ( unless of course they are shiffon with bra strap blouses ?)

      • hehe..kanika..i guess you are the one being a lil too harsh..i guess the more PC way would be calling it ‘matronly’….Aunty ji is just a way of saying that she looks not-so-young-and-fresh..and btw there are too many ways to wear a sari and still look young without going the bra-strap blouse way..

      • kanika…u still have to ask why? just look at yourself …Rani – wearing the same sari…looking ravishing in 3/4 blouse (no bra strap- if u failed to notice that too) and then look at this woman…she is yonger than Rani but chooses to wear clothes that make her look like an aunty instead of an actress

        • i agree with Ruchii and SWV…..when rani wears a sraee she makes you feel like wearing that and when vidya wears a saree she makes you feel “i dont want to wear a saree.i dont want to look more than my age”…the effort that you make to pull off a dress really counts…all females want to look half of their age and vidya looks more than her actual age…its ok if she doesnt like to wear western but their are 1000 good choices for eastern as well…she needs to come out of her comfort zone!!

    • agreed..! She looks gorgeous and there are a lot of comments on whether it is aging her, but i do think it is figure appropriate. She looks good in sarees and wears them well. Love the hair, make up and jasmine flowers !

    • Yep. I’m not going gaga over the sari but Vidya carries it off without being overwhelmed by the yellow and the plaid. She looks fabulous and you can never once fault Vidya’s makeup.

      • i think she looks really nice and pretty and i love this look. just that it looks like she is going to the temple or going for a puja in it, not to an awards night that is all. it is such a traditional print that it is hard to get past that connection.

  2. I can’t say I love that sari, and she really needs to find a new and varied look! having a signature style if different than wearing the same look over and over again with a different sari!

  3. Plaid on shirts, skirts and shorts look good. I’m still not sure on Sari’s. Looks pretty weird. Vidya looks her usual aunty self and boring.

    • That’s probably because you’ve never been to South India or never seen south Indian kanchivaram or other cotton sarees from there.. South Indian women wear plenty of beautiful silk and cotton sarees in different color and size checks on them.. What vidya is wearing is just one variety and she looks lovely..

      • So true, these check patterns are pretty common on kanchivarrams and look lovely as far as I’m concerned. Love the way Sabyasachis done it, and Vidya looks great – she is one laucky lady getting to wear a diff. Sabya saree practically every night!

      • HAHA, i’m from the south. Never grew up there but i have been there helluva times. I remember some plaid(madras) pattern Kanjeevaram saris on my mom but it wasn’t this way. Well, i find this one weird. Hey, each to their own.

  4. i know you guys are BIG sabya fans, but…….i think their saris make women look wider and are better for older women. this sari, is for nobody at all because, madras checks to me remind me of a) table cloths, b) cleaning cloths.

  5. She does look beautiful, but isnt it time she changed it up a little? Am I the only one who thinks she is too young to make the wedding-attendance sari-tied back hair-staid jewellery her ONLY look? (elegant as it may be?) I keep waiting for the mamis to come out of the curtain behind her and ask her to marry their sons.

  6. She looks good, this kind of print is mostly seen on older women (50-60 yrs of age) in the South, but the blouse and the saree border makes it more elegant …full marks for wearing it right!!!

  7. LOVE it. She looks lovely… and at the risk of sounding like a stuck record, so so refreshing to see a) a woman dressing her age (not a frilly frock in sight) and b) a woman wearing her native, traditional garment/outfit. Bravo Vidya!

  8. I actually dislike it. While I love Vidya, traditional clothes and the mogra, I don’t think that sari is one you wear to an awards function, even if it is a Sabyasachi.

  9. about this look all i can say is “been there done that”. Vidya has been following this style for quite a while by now . she needs this phase to go .. take a break gurl , look your age , make another style statement , u can wear this cotton , silk and all other sabyasachi sarees when u turn 40. i mean then this will suit your age and look elegant too.

  10. She looks, elegant, classy and sophisticated..and honestly its not because of the sari (although it is quite beautiful, and I would like have one!!), its because she has the confidence to carry it off and is obviously quite comfortable in indian attire. For those that say this sari ages her, and makes her look wider..a) she has a more mature face..there’s nothing she can do about it.. b) gurl has hips and personally i think she is embracing them. Whatever the case is she looks ravishing..yes she looks mature but not in a matronly way more like in an elegant and classy way and plus just look at her face..she is quite literally radiant.

  11. i really like the saree…she really pulls it of….
the saree Rani wore had a huge border and too many colors….that saree could be perfect for vidya and this one can look good on rani’s petite frame!! but i do agree that this saree or maybe its her style that ages her…when rani wears a saree she never looks aged up…so i guess its the way vidya wears sarees!!

  12. I hate derogatory terms like “aunty” or “behenji” just because they reek of sexism and ageism (are there any equivalent terms for men that have the same connotation? Didn’t think so…), but I generally agree with other commentators that Vidya is a gorgeous woman, but with slightly mature features that tend to make her look older than she actually is. Sabyasachi sarees have impeccable craftsmanship but they are fabric-heavy and overwhelming on petite figures. The endless amount of fabric paired with long sleeves really ages Vidya. I have yet to see her in a blouse that hits above the elbow – a little skin can go a long way.

  13. Sad, sad, sad… this age centric obsession that we women heap on ourselves and each other. Its like holding a gun to our heads and going ”look young OR die” !!

  14. What’s designer about it.I agree it;s a beautiful saree but nothing really designed by Sabya except that border which is seen on all his sarees.
    Nevertheless,she looks nice.Nice…I said nice.
