In Sabyasachi

Up until today, I have mostly liked Vidya in her Sabyasachi saris even though you may or may not have. More the former perhaps. 😛

Today, am on your side. While the sari itself is pretty, it is way too overwhelming on Ms. Balan. I do not get that extra layer around the folds which in turn makes Vidya look big.

    • i know! she has no idea. people keep saying how amazing she looks in them, but they always look like she has thrown fabindia bedsheets on herself.

      • I totally agree with the bed sheet comment..it looks just like that. you’d think she’d know how to drape a saree well by now. i love sarees and think they are very elegant and stylish. quite honestly, seeing her in these sarees again and again is making it more and more evident that she’s trying too hard to make it her signature look and that really irritates me.

        • And she deliberately goes bare neck and bare wrists with all her sarees. That makes it so incomplete. It may be okay with some heavily sequined or ornate outfits, but especially with a saree going accesory-free makes it feel like something’s missing. A simple necklace, a solitary bangle/bracelet would make it look much better.

  1. Get ready to see more of the same ol same ol… gajra, floppily worn Sabya sari, devoid of any jewelry, big bindi look from Vidya as the award functions roll in one after another!

  2. she is probably trying to channel the 50’s south indian heroine look,(Savithri/Jamuna etc) the hair, the bindi, the blouse work in her favor but the saree and the draping don’t…draping is the worst..

  3. I love her sari, especially the color. The fabric does seem heavy. I wish she would wear bangles. I like her style, she has found her niche. Repetitive yes, at least with classy saris and not god awful velvet endowed anarkalis. She fairs better than Ash.

      • She’s so simple yet elegant and oh-so-beautiful without getting those extra make-up and extra hair extensions and all the extra things other actresses get to make them look beautiful..Vidya is naturally beautiful and the saris look good on her including this one.

      • Really? Sridevi and Medhuri in their heyday (which was not so long ago) would dress up in such saris and look lovely- how come such elegance is now considered matronly?
I hate how people don’t pick on people like Maliaka or Shilpa who dress essentially dress in the same style (body hugging dresses)-I can’t understand people being blinded by “curves” and a”killer body”….I for one can’t get enough of Vidya’s face with the lovely bindi, flower in her hair and that winsome smile…

        • no they never dressed quite like Vidya. And elegance varies with times. What was fashionable a decade ago is not fashionable now. I don’t think elegance is matronly – the way Vidya dresses often looks matronly – i don’t think it’s purely because of the saris, but like I’ve often repeated, the way she doesn’t accessorize well – kanjeevarams need necklaces, bangles, big earrings etc.. to look youthful. on the other hand, a plain chiffon sari with a halter blouse wouldn’t need the same accessories, and can work very well with no accessories at all..

          • You’re right. She does look matronly here with tel in the hair, big bindi, no jewelry, bad draping and 3/4th sleeve printed blouse. If only she had worn a shorter blouse, more jewelry, different hairdo and smaller bindi, she’d have nailed the look. She already has a Mother India-ish face(and i mean it in a good way). No need to accentuate it.

        • I always love her in sarees. I dont think her sarees are to blame for ageing her at all. Instead, its the way she has worn it and the pale make up.

        • What comparison is this? Shilpa does from sheath dresses to denims to Saris. With Malaika it’s a different story. But both those ladies do their look/dresses (body hugging or whatever) full justice. While Vidya who is seen mostly in the same Sabya saris/gajra hair but still can’t manage to drape a sari proper.

        • I second that..nobody ever complains about Malaika Arora Khan’s short and tight dresses..everytime in each and every function one see her in those short tight dresses just because some peoople have complimented her on her butt so she’s been wearing short tight dresses and showing her butt and her tighs everytime!

    • completely agree… she can stand beside katrina and say ‘this is my daughter’ and it would be completely believable given how matronly she looks these days in whatever she wears!!

  4. Maybe the boyfriend (if there is one) likes her like this 🙂

Over Sabya really. There are heaps of ethnic sarees so I wonder why she wears the same thing – maybe as a start she should wear a borderless simple silk if she likes heavy blouses.

Girls is pretty and a good actress however. She looks different here though – is that slightly crooked smile a bit Madhubalaish?

  5. The sari is stunning but it’s not worn well and does not look good on Vidya at all. She also needs to stop wearing these same old Sabya saris everywhere. She’s unnecessarily aging herself an extra 20 years! She can dress like this once in a blue moon and leave the rest to her mother.

  6. Am I the only one that hates this saree! It looks like a hot mess and I am big Sabyasachi fan!

I dont think she’s doing anything to make it better either. The draping is bad. Sarees give you wonderful curves but she just looks like a ball of silk fabric. She holds the pallu very inelegantly. I noticed that even in the KwK episode. She should have added some bangles atleast and the make up does nothing for her features.

  7. I guess you missed the posts where Priyanka Chopra gets the flak for her repetitive style..and how even though Malaika carries off the short, body hugging dresses but its always said that she is sticking to her usual style..same for Dia for her classic, simple style..or Anu Dewan for her hair style..and so on..and on..and on..
    🙂 lighten up woman..!!

  8. yeah the saree is overwhelming on her but OH MY GOD isnt that one of the most gorgeous color we have seen!

Payal and Priyanka, where in India does Sabya retail the kanjeevarams?

  9. a 50 year old classic color combinations in kancheevarams!! Every aunt and maami’s in chennai or tamilnadu will have this.

give it to sabya to take a classic color and mess it up like this!!

vidya needs a stylist NOW !!

  10. A smaller bindi and some bangles and a chain (not heavy duty necklaces) would have completed the look. Also, I think the saree is too long, that’s why it’s bunched in the middle.

  11. You know how good quality kanjeevarams are very high and you have to tuck quite a bit in with the folds. This might be one such case I think – that’s why it looks so messy.

  12. So predictable and totally boringgg. And I’ve noticed she always looks messy in sarees…for someone who wears them so much you’d think she would know how to wear them by now but i guess not apparently!

  13. I’m loving sabyasachis silk sarees but i agree with most of the comments saying she needs to accessorize a bit more. Simplicity is great but with such a heavy saree some striking earrings and a chunky karra would have looked better. I know Rekhas a different age group but she would have looked amazing in such a saree, as she knows how to pull this look off – and she need to hitch those pleats up a bit, as they’re dragging on the floor and making the draping look bad.

    • After seeing all the rest of the pics of the apsara awards, and the sea of gowns, gowns and more gowns – Vidya, Katrina and even Aishwariya seem like a breath of fresh air!

  14. Its fine to make a saree your trademark – but then mix it up a little. There are so many fun sarees, and you don’t need to look like you are attending a wedding everytime you wear one. The older generation fared better because they wore the work from many different karigars/designers. Vidya needs to do that too.

  15. The drape is really bad and the reason is, the saree is too wide.
Authentic Kanjeevaram sarees have that problem. They are really wide and atleast 5 -6 inches need to be tucked in for a 5 7″. (From my personal experience). This width becomes a problem around the folds and will look messy if its done in a hurry.
She needs to change her style, otherwise what will she do when she turns fifty.

  16. Yea, she looks dowdy…but it’s refreshing to see this than the skimpy Western dresses that most bollywood bimbos wear at every public appearance. It’s like they live in LA and not in India.

  17. Very matronly! reminds me of my mom. Wish she would work on her youthful side a little more. Ethnic is good. But like in acting, variety is a plus.

  18. yuck! she looks like her own grandmother. dull and boring and repetitive. SUch a boring formula! she will soon be playing mommy roles in Bollywood at this rate!

  19. i think she’s looking great and the sari is gorgeous (except for the blouse)! the people complaining about how ‘messy’ this sari looks on her probably only wear cheap art silk saris – if they wear saris at all.

  20. Sabyasachi is probably one of the best designers that the country can boast of, and Vidya whom we often see in his creations looks lovely and ethereal and the same goes for this appearance of hers.
