Sari Style

Sporting her signature style, a plain bordered sari (a Sabyasachi) with minimal accessories, Ms. Balan made an appearance at a recent book launch.

The lovely Ms. Balan has me flummoxed… I no longer know if I should declare this a yawnworthy same ol’, same ol’ or write it off as her signature style.

  1. it is certainly repetitive but she looks so much more put together here than her other appearances and the saree is to die for..I’ll somehow take this any day over 40’s somethings trying to dress like ‘teen something in barely there clothes 🙂

  2. Given how beautiful she is, surely she can pull off different kinds of attire (Indian ethnic wear at least). Still she insists on sticking to the tried and tested. She looks lovely here but NEED TO SEE A CHANGE NOW !!!!

    • I TOTALLY agree with RS here 🙂 ….now a days , I start yawning before even opening the link of HHC [thr’ twitter] when they feature the combo of Vidya Balan & Sabyasachi. :O

  4. dont expect anything new from her. it is clear that she will always wear sabyasachi. she said on a show that she trusts him and only he can dress her right. she looks good though.

  5. I think this is her style and she looks good in it. She is trying to channel Rekha- the minimalistic Rekha. I would love to see her wear sarees of other kinds and not just Sabyasachi!

  6. I don’t think I would yawn at that, probably write it off as her security blanket. From the looks of it, she seems insecure about her body and hence lacks the courage to try something new. I’d say Indian ethnic attire is one of the safest bets, atleast on indian women, and her persistent refusal to give us looks from the vast collection of indian attire only goes to prove she could do so much better with a stylist, heck even a lifestyle coach (not trying to be rude but for such a pretty girl, she could use some creative criticism).

    • Thank goodness somebody said it ! Seriously ,what is there to design here ? Many weavers across our country spend countless painstaking hours and come up with hundred times better design than this. Just because it is Sabya we dont have to give it big blind nod. He is good at his stuff compared to others but sarees like these dont need any mention whatsoever

  7. She looks good, as usual, in sarees. The saree is beautiful too. My gripe is about the blouse. You guys can do a dozen “Again” posts about the blouse.
Sabya, this is for you. She trusts you, so isn’t it your job to make sure you design something else that looks good on her. Where is your creativity? Have you given up designing, esp for your main ambassador?

  8. she has decided this to be her style, so this is her style. for those who keep talking about having and not having a style, this is what happens when u have a style. ppl can predict, hence it’s going to be boring most of the time.

  9. i find the border of the sari too thick. also the combo of open hair hanging down, thick border, and tenty drape of the saree…it all makes the look too ‘heavy’ if u know what i mean.

  10. Well finally a look she has nailed perfectly. I was tired of seeing her swing from western (which she was miserably failing at) to Rekha inspired kanjeevaram- open hair- lots of makeup look.
Make up actually does a disservice to Vidya’s beauty. She needs the natural make up or no make up look. Not everyone needs to look western ramp material.
Vidya looks most beautiful when she doesn’t try to hard.

  11. I think Vidya has found her comfort level when it comes to style. Sabya sarees suit her very indian face. She’ll probably start experimenting, we just have to be patient. I think she looks fabulous, simple, elegant most of all appropriate…

  12. She’s learned to drape the saree. Good.
I don’t really mind that she sticks to sarees. She likes them. Okay. But can she please, at least, experiment with the TYPE of saree?

  13. At first I didnt want to bother myself with comments but Priyanka’s intentions to perhaps “write Vidya’s dressing as style’ caught my attention.

Cladding your self over and over again in the same ol sari does not spell style for me. For instance Celina loves sari and many of us would not wear it ‘her way’ but oh heck I think that’s Celina’s style and she has a style.

Vidya simply wraps herself in the sari and that’s the only effort she makes to really ‘dress up’ .So I dont think there is any ‘style’ going on with her.

  14. I would accept this as her “style”, but still feel like she doesn’t know what she’s doing. Sabya seems to be her benefactor, HE has a very definite sense of style. She still seems completely clueless.

  16. Hmm went through some previous Vidya posts. She wears western and you bash her, she wears Indian and you write her off!!

Why dont you women appoint yourselves as her stylist! Im sure you would do a marvelous job!

    • Vidya was not bashed for wearing western…she was bashed for not wearing it right…and same holds for indian clothes that she wears…although she has corrected the draping of the saree… i still feel she is not comfortable even in wearing a saree…salwars she does well i have to admit.

      • Hmm I really dont know what you are talking about cos she is as comfortable as one can be in a saree 🙂

Face it, not all women can carry off western. Yea she can try and eventually get there, but if she has found her comfort zone and is sticking to it, dont see anything wrong with it.

After all Vidyas purpose in life is not to please us or the HHC bloggers.

  17. That’s not her style.. That sabya’s style. That’s just a comfortable way of dressing up for her.. Like someone said a security blanket. I mean really u can’t fault her look. She looks gorgeous! N she knows but heck doesn’t she get bored! I don’t think knows wat her style is as yet n thus stick to something she knows is safe!

    • I agree, shes more like Sabyas ‘muse’ and hes the one dressing her. I don’t think she has a style per se, shes just wearing what shes been told to.She looks gorgeous though, its a look that works on her.

  19. ok, dont want to discuss further about what her style is or not, but i have decided that this (sari, salwar kameez – which are not too blingly, having more earthy appeal with few jewellery pieces) is her style.

if the website starts posting dita von teese, audrey hepburn, or whichever syle icons at the rate of how the celebrities are posted in this website, i will be bored of those so called style icons too. seeing someone more often and seeing the same style, same thing over and over is boring for me.
