In Character

I was all about to go “aaargh” at that floral sari on Vidya when I remembered that the promo pic of her next ‘Ishqiya’ had her in something similar also. Safe to say, Ms. Balan has jumped onto her next ‘In Character’ phase and we all better get ready to see many more of such saris in the next few weeks.

  1. Aargh is right – as usual, neck up she is luminous, but that sari is just not flattering and for once I hate the longer blouse length – longer blouse sleeves are usually elegant, but here the length is just awkward. The thing is, Vidya can totally pull off glam, as we can see in the Daboo Ratnani calendar picture, which is why a look like this is so frustrating.

  2. Oh vidya vidya! why this sleeve length? and these colors arrrgh! She should repeat to herself every morning: *I must get a stylist, must get a stylist*

  3. wow back to back movies! she must be one of the busiest actresses these days..before it was Priyanka Chopra. She reminds me very much of Smita Patil. The saree is not for me but oh well, if she’s In Character then what can I say? btw, the movie looks great…I love Vishal Bharadwaj films!!

      • haha you’re right. I’ve chosen to wear only eastern wear all my life (I’m 27) and am nowhere as dowdy and ‘amma’ type as Vidya. To think that she does what she does while having access to designers, us mere mortals can only dream of! Should be penalized for such offensive behaviour.

    • Just saw pictures of Sushmita, Kangana and others dressed at this event … Vidya stuck out like a sore thumb! Everyone was dressed classy and Vidya was “in character”. And it wasn’t even a promotional event for her movie. Whatever!!

  4. I understand the desire to be in character, but I think she could have gone with a more interesting piece. Least to say she looks lovely as always.

  5. The bai who used to cook for us used to wear sarees like this. But even she has moved on to better looking stuff. I love Vidya Balan though

  6. Why is she in character for this event? It is not a promotional event for Ishqiya. Would have given her a pass for that. Hey the saree in the poster is better – it has a contrast border and pallu, and a better print.

  7. Lighten up guys! She plays a lower-middle-class woman from the heartland in the movie, obviously she won’t be wearing either Sabyasachi or Kanjeevarams!

  8. vidya honey.. why the tacky bangles and the oh so ugly hair style.. did you just oil them and open them???? i wont say anythign about the saaree cause she must’ve been asked to wear it or somethign (i am hoping).. but accesorize yourself better..

  9. One must wonder why she was ‘in character’ at an event that had nothing to do with her film. And where to begin…the colours on the sari are so ghastly and to crown it all she has to go and wear it ‘Gujju ben’ style which makes even the most slender woman look rotund and matronly. And those elbow-length sleeves….gahh!

And anyway I think this ‘in character’ promotion style is rubbish. I wish I could go back in time to the 60s and 70s when they just made films and had them released without all this fuss, and when the films themselves weren’t so wannabe-Hollywoodish (in spite of being heavily ‘inspired’).

    • Oh my god, thank you so much for saying that. Cinema in the 60s and 70s was beautiful, whether in India or otherwise.
The trash they make in India today cannot even be qualified as “cinema”.
And the whole fuss about the promotion is such a needless side effect of capitalism. 😀

  10. Now this is just ghastly(always wanted to use the word, so delightfully British). The repetitive Sabyasachis I could deal with(and love), but not yellow-pink, my least favourite combination when it comes to ethnic wear. Also a saree doesn’t have to be expensive for one to look good, just tasteful. I fail to see how huge pink flowers on a yellow background worn with a pink blouse with contrasting yellow piping is tasteful. Yikes.

  11. What charactor? Unless she is playing a “ba” or a “dhoban”: these are the folks who wear such 200 Rs cheap, gaudy synthetic sarees and they all carry it off better than she is

  12. Once upon a time there were no ‘in-character’ promotions and the movies actually did well. I dont understand how this ‘in-character’ thing is going to help the movie do well.

  13. She looks like a maid from Ahmedabad! Horrendous… Saw her at Dabboo Ratnani Calendar launch looking like a 50 year old school teacher.. what the hell is wrong with her.. enough of Auntyji.., Take acue from Ash at SOnalis Bday!

    • I don’t like Vidya’s look but I still won’t recommend her to take a cue from Aishwarya’s that particular look or for most part any look. Aishwarya is 9.5/10 times a fashion disaster.

  14. She makes even a Sabya look bad. No surprises here. Arrrgh. VidyaB really needs to tone her arms if she so wants to wear these kind of blouses.

  15. Vidya’s checklist:
    1) Saree worn the wrong way: Check
    2) Color that reminds you of a daily ritual: Check
    3) 70’s floral pattern: Check
    4) Awkward length of the blouse’s sleeve (circa 1980’s): Check
    5) Glass bangles: Check
    6) Oily, limp hair: Check
    7) Looking like Kanta bai: UNCHECK as even she is more fashionable than our dear ol’ Vidya!!

  16. I really think it is an occupational hazard of being an actress.
She is definitely in the character as she is gathering so much interest/criticism for her attire.
We all know she is a beauty and can afford expensive sarees.
So, guys give her a break and admire the courage to look like this and care two hoots about what people would say.

    • You know, I’ve said the same thing about Vidya before, but why must one applaud bad judgement? We all have our job requirements, and as a celebrity and film personality, it’s not too much to ask for these people to look good and take some trouble with their appearance, IMO. After all, they have the means and the access.
