The Travelling Sari: Continued

News coming in from Syria and India last week was just so tough to hear. So when Anju, who the sari traveled to next, mentioned she was going to wear it to the protest at her city, we said Yes Yes Yes! The Travelling Sari is meant to celebrate all the wonderful women it meets on its journey but we cannot ignore that we are also at a time where there is just such great injustice happening.

We may not have been able to protest physically but feel that in a way Anju was able to represent us and our angst as well!

If you are a sari enthusiast and have heard of the #100SareePact, you definitely know of Anju (@maudgalkadam). That's whom the #TravellingSari made its way to this week. . As a women owned business, we've never been shy of voicing our opinion, outrage and support when it comes to women's rights and that of the girl child. What happened with Asifa more recently and what continues to happen with women and children generally has us enraged. While we physically weren't able to participate in the protest march, Anju wearing the sari to one in Bangalore made us feel like we were a part of it too. . Our latest Travelling Sari tribe member Anju is a communications professional but if she were describe herself, she'd say she was a story-teller. Whether it is building brands, fund raising, interviewing, she loves seeking connections in her work, of closing the loop and enhancing the impact of story. . From having worn saris as a kid when playing house house to wearing saris for her work right away as a young business journalist, the progression was natural. As the sole woman in an all-men crew, the sari gave her the confidence to lean in. As she settled into her career, she found that the sari remained her go-to garment and became part of her identity. . Since Anju is a product of Bombay and Bangalore, her sari collection has grown from buying from these two cities. In Bombay, Kala Niketan was The place to shop when she was young. In Bangalore, she recommends Vimor – The folks that run it and the stories they share about every sari they weave makes it a must-visit. She also can't help mention that Nallis (especially the Chennai one) is a delightful treasure trove. . All that said, Anju adds she loves a bit of whimsy, to look for little gems in tucked away shops. And being a believer in slow fashion, likes to shop from shops that are family owned. . #TheTravellingSari #TheTravellingSarixHHCGuiltfree . #SariLove #SariTales #SarisOfInstagram #SareesOfInstagram #HHCGuiltfree #SareeLove #SareeTales #SariLovers #SareeLovers #SariStyle #SareeStyle #SariNotSorry #SareeNotSorry #MadeInIndia #IWearHandloom #SareeLovers #JusticeForAsifa

The #TheTravellingSari this week made its way to @su_ki_kahani_insta_ki_zubani. . Surekha, after a 30 year stint in the IT industry, has moved on to keeping her home wheels churning besides pursuing a variety of interests. . She started wearing saris right after college when she started her first job. She also promised herself way back then that she would buy one sari every month and that's how her sari collection began. She would always look out for saris which were a lil' offbeat and her quest for different has led to a collection that is diverse in textures, weaves and colors. When marriage and family life took over, while her sari wearing became minimal, her love for buying them never stopped! Fast forward to now, she has started enjoying wearing her thoughtfully acquired collection again. . She wore #TheTravellingSari to a friend's place for dinner and in a room full of denims, the sari not only stood out but made heads turn! . Surekha suggests not missing out on the stores, Kanya and Angadi Silks, when shopping in #Bangalore. But, if you happen to be in the city during October, you'd hit the sari jackpot because the annual Crafts Council of Karnataka's widely sought event 'Vastrabharna' happens during that time. It's an exhibition that brings the best weavers from all over India and has been running for the past 26 years. . #TheTravellingSari #TheTravellingSarixHHCGuiltfree . #SariLove #SariTales #SarisOfInstagram #SareesOfInstagram #HHCGuiltfree #SareeLove #SareeTales #SariLovers #SareeLovers #SariStyle #SareeStyle #SariNotSorry #SareeNotSorry #MadeInIndia #IWearHandloom #SareeLovers

The Travelling Sari: Continued

The sari just made it’s third and fourth stop. Read on to see where it went and who wore it and we also have created an interactive map…

From Ahmedabad, the sari travelled to Goa to @sareespeak. . Vini is a merry homemaker and loves saris extremely. While she didn't wear saris a lot earlier when her kids were younger, she has been an active wearer since the last two years. If you follow her you already know she has pretty much nailed that backshot. . Her day in #TheTravellingSari, which she loved for its color, included a visit to a sari exhibition that led to scooping up a few more. . When in Goa, she suggests visiting Paper Boat in Sangolda to get your hands on some. . P.S. She also leads a Facebook group of the same name where you can share your love for saris. . So, where will the sari travel to next? Stay tuned! We hope you will follow along on Instagram. . #TheTravellingSari #TheTravellingSarixHHCGuiltfree . #SariLove #SariTales #SarisOfInstagram #SareesOfInstagram #HHCGuiltfree #SareeLove #SareeTales #SariLovers #SareeLovers #SariStyle #SareeStyle #SariNotSorry #SareeNotSorry #AllIndiaBackshot

From #Goa, the sari travelled to @poojajagadeesh who lives in #Bangalore. Pooja is a graphic designer by training and has been working as a Brand Designer for many years now. . She always loved the sari but was mostly a ceremonial sari wearer till about three years ago. That's when she had her sari epiphany of sorts and has been wearing them fairly regularly to work, party and even while travelling (outside of India). . Her mom has an amazing collection of saris which she had stopped wearing almost completely but since Pooja is wearing them now so consistenly, it has made her mom pick it up again too. Which of course, makes Pooja very very happy! . If in Bangalore, she suggests Vimor and House of Tamara. Both stores house great examples of South Indian weaves and work very closely with the weaving community. Stay tuned for the next edition! .  #TheTravellingSari #TheTravellingSarixHHCGuiltfree . #SariLove #SariTales #SarisOfInstagram #SareesOfInstagram #HHCGuiltfree #SareeLove #SareeTales #SariLovers #SareeLovers #SariStyle #SareeStyle #SariNotSorry #SareeNotSorry #MadeInIndia

The Travelling Sari: Continued

The sari just made it’s second stop. Read on to see where it went and who wore it.

And in case you missed it, here is where it started its journey from!

The travelling sari's next pit stop was Ahmedabad where @life_In_A_saree lives. A doctor by profession, she wears mostly handwoven cottons to work everyday. While she started off wearing saris on special occasions a decade or so ago, it has become an everyday choice of attire the last 3 years. . We asked her about the sari, and she notes that many who wear saris to work tend to usually choose relatively sober and non-blingy numbers, herself included. This saree with its zari borders was an exception, plus it was probably the brightest, boldest red that she had ever worn to work. But she is happy that she did it anyway rather than wait for the perfect occasion, because the travelling sari now has seen the workday of an average Indian working woman. . If in Ahmedabad, she recommends visiting the Government Emporia and the Weaver cooperative stores to get your hands on some saris. And although they may not be glamorous places to shop at, the range of weaves and prices are unmatched. . So, where will the sari travel to next? Stay tuned! We hope you will follow along on Instagram. . #TheTravellingSari #TheTravellingSarixHHCGuiltfree . #SariLove #SariTales #SarisOfInstagram #SareesOfInstagram #HHCGuiltfree #SareeLove #SareeTales #SariLovers #SareeLovers #SariStyle #SareeStyle #SariNotSorry #SareeNotSorry

The Travelling Sari

In case you missed it, we kicked off The Travelling Sari series a few hours ago on Instagram! We hope you enjoy the series and stay tuned to meet all the fabulous ladies wearing this red beauty their way!

Six yards. And a few hundred miles.
.
For as long as we remember, we've loved the sari. The grace, elegance and its unique ability to fully lend itself to the wearer has always been part of its charm. . Though we've always flirted with the sari on and off, for the last year and a half, it's been a full-blown love affair. No longer was the sari reserved for weddings, pujas, Diwali parties and other designated special occasions. We made it part of our regular sartorial lexicon. Trite as it sounds, there's been no looking back since.
.
Which brings us to this post. We love how there are so many ways to wear a sari, so many ways to make it your own. And so, we've decided to send one little cotton sari on a not so little adventure . We kick it off with Sumitra (@sareesandstories) from Kuala Lumpur who has been wearing saris to work since she was in her twenties and while it annoys her a bit that folks find it odd, she hopes that attitude changes and has been championing the cause one sari at a time. She also graciously donated one from her own collection for this adventure.
.
So this is how to works- Once the first in the chain has worn the sari and photographed it for Instagram, she will then send it on to the next. Who after wearing will then send it on to… Well, you get the idea. Each time, you will see how the woman wearing it makes the sari her own. And documents the day, evening, even just a moment perhaps for posterity.
.
Through this journey we hope to introduce you to the versatility of the sari and while at it, to some women who are wonderful at what they do.
.
We hope you will follow along on Instagram.  #TheTravellingSari #TheTravellingSarixHHCGuiltfree
