Rishta By Arjun, Spring Summer 2010, Lakme Fashion Week

Stepping outside the boundaries of ‘season’ was Arjun Saluja’s collection ‘The Melting Architecture’. It started with a dark theme consisting more of structured pieces and ended with more loose flowing outfits. More toned down pieces consisting of the butterfly print and geometric patterns is what I foresee hitting the market.

Nikasha, Spring Summer 2010, Lakme Fashion Week

Nikasha’s collection ‘In Full Bloom’ started off with white to resemble a bud and slowly progressed to colors like pink/coral to reflect a flower in bloom. Intricate floral embroidery marked the simple flowy pieces that consisted of layered tops, wraparound skirts, and capris. While I liked the layered tops, the pink embroidered pieces didn’t leave a lasting impression that would make me go and buy one.

Nachiket Barve, Spring Summer 2010, Lakme Fashion Week

‘Toxic’ was the name of Nachiket Barve’s collection but it was anything but. Inspired by the colors of the dangerous creatures of the wild, Barve offered several dresses with intricate applique details in geometric patterns. The layering of silk with chiffon offered a summery feel but at the same time a formal tone making all the pieces perfect for cocktail hour.

Manish Malhotra, Spring Summer 2010, Lakme Fashion Week

Manish Malhotra presented a Bridal collection instead of Spring/Summer one and while the designs were pretty much the same as seen last season at the A/W show, Manish brightened up the color scheme using more reds instead of beige.

Anamika Khanna Spring 2010, Lakme Fashion Week

Anamika Khanna’s collection embraced simplicity and feminity by keeping the silhouettes free-flowing and easy, and the color palette quite minimal with mostly black and white interspersed with colors like red, corals and fuschia used more as an accent. ‘Yay’ for the fact that she mostly used cottons, especially muslin for her collection, something that I needed to see after all the velvet on runways. Loved the restrained use of appliqués, smocking, lace, cutouts, sequins and those zardozi motifs. It was understated and minimal without being bleak.

Anuj Sharma Spring 2010, Lakme Fashion Week

I can’t wait to see pieces from this collection ‘off-the-runway’! Anuj Sharma’s ‘Button Masala’ collection on the runway seems pretty alrite but wait till you read this… with buttons and button holes as the principal theme of his collection, he created garments that can be worn in multiple ways just by fastening the buttons in a different manner each time. A color palette of red, black, off-white and nude was the perfect backdrop to the rather easy silhouettes used on the runway; makes for a perfect foil for the wearer to bring her own to the clothes. And the endless possibilities with those buttons has me excited to see this collection in person.

Aneeth Arora Spring 2010, Lakme Fashion Week

Aneeth Arora’s ‘Pero’ was bit of a disappointment. While I appreciate the fact, and I really do appreciate it that it was a collection that predominantly used handloom fabrics like ikats, natural dyed khadi, bandhani and gamochas, the feeling that none of these elements were used to their full potential was hard to shake-off. The extremely wearable separates and the earthy cotton clothes with discreet floral embroidery and prints were applaud-worthy and yet can’t help but feel let-down over the fact that the designer didn’t take full advantage of what she was working with. Seemed like it was off to a great start and then just missed the homerun by that much.

Anand Kabra Spring Summer 2010, Lakme Fashion Week

Anand Kabra’s collection titled ‘Kumari’ had to be one of my favorites from day one. I loved how the colors and the fabrics were so soft and feminine and then were juxtaposed with those well constructed cuts, silhouettes, asymmetrical hemlines and embellishments. The play between the ultra-feminine and the understated strength is what won me over. Loved the saris, the cocktail dresses… practically all pieces from the collection.

Anita Dongre Timeless Spring Summer 2010, Lakme Fashion Week

Anita Dongre’s “Jaipur My Jaipur” was an homage to Rajasthan and it’s rich cultural heritage and so for her Spring 2010 collection, Anita Dongre used traditional Rajasthani weaves and fabrics like luxurious brocades, satin, net, lush velvets and silks in rich and regal colors. If I were to think of this collection independent of it’s Spring/Summer tag, I loved it. There were many pieces in the collection that would work perfectly with the festive season or in a bride’s trousseau. However with all the heavy velvets and weighty embellishments, it seemed rather oppressive for a ‘Spring/Summer’ collection. Contradicting myself though, in a country like India where seasonal tags like ‘Spring Summer’ and ‘Fall’ are pretty irrelevant, I can see Anita Dongre Timeless really being ‘Timeless’.

Shyamal And Bhumika Spring Summer 2010, Lakme Fashion Week

Another collection that was one for the ‘trousseau’. Barring a few pieces, it was hard for me to get excited about this collection mainly because it felt like we had seen it all before, the colors, the fabrics, the work, the color combinations… Having said that, I loved the lehengas with the velvet dupattas; the contrast between textures made for great visual interest.

Vivek Karuna Karan Spring Summer 2010, Lakme Fashion Week

An extremely wearable and commercial collection; the pieces from the runway could go straight onto a retail shelf. And for a collection to be tagged with that is quite the double-edged sword. Nothing about the runway was exciting, wearable yes, exciting no. And really, there was nothing to write home about, not about the Jodhpurs and certainly not the dresses. The only dress that stood out was the one that South Indian actress Mamta Mohandas (far left of the pic) wore on the runway. Summery and cheery.

In Mandira Wirk

It wasn’t just Mandira Bedi who came to Wirk’s show to lend her support, celebrities came in droves and they were all dressed in clothes straight out of Mandira Wirk’s SS 2010 Collection!

From what we see, none of these lil’ draped numbers look particularly flattering on either of these ladies nor are they easy on the eye.

P.S: Malaika Arora Khan walked for Mandira Wirk in that dress.

The Pink Ladies

The dominant color among the attendees on day one of Lakme Fashion Week had to be ‘pink’ in various shapes and shades… And while on some it worked and worked well, on others (like Bhagyashree) it had us scrambling for the exit.

On an aside though, does Bhagyashree age at all?
