Lehenga Love?

Sonam kicked off Diwali festivities wearing a a light rust red khadi lehenga by Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla but the standout part of her outfit was the clay and paper mâché bustier made by The Vernacular Modern.

Am I surprised that in a time where folks are flocking to metallic bustiers or wearing a Theyyam wall decor as a top, Sonam who already sported a Suneet Varma metal bustier went for something different. Not one bit. The Kapoor sisters love to up the ante and did so here as well.

Like the look? I wish the bust wasn’t that high on the neck. The emeralds against the rust color though was striking.

  1. I can see a lot of papier mache projects coming to very sticky ends!
On a serious note, I wish the piece had been fashioned less like armor and more like a bustier.

  2. I think it was molded to match Sonam’s body shape which was interesting. I am actually curious how they are holding it together. She looks good but I wish there were pictures that aren’t stylized and from real event.

    • My guess is, its pasted over a cotton bustier. It holds water very well.

I think This will basically will be like her standing in a cotton bustier and them slathering clay over it, letting it dry and then painting it…

      Hours of work.

      Im not sure though.
ve seen foreign designers work with metal, mesh, paper mache, chainmail…
But clay or mud is probably a first!

Well done for the attempt though.

  3. Gimmicky, yes!
But I actually don’t think its vulgar or obscene as a lot of other folks have commented!
I don’t understand the top in the first outfit TBH!

  4. Sigh. I know she wants to be hatke and all that but this is just screaming trying-too-hard and just looks…odd. Met Gala or something? Maybe. Diwali? No.
