In Vera Wang

The newly minted bride picked a bridal favorite for her latest red carpet outing, a Vera Wang gown. Hair, make-up and her Chopard jewelry complemented the rather romantic look well.

The dress with its voluminous ruffle and dramatic train was at once both Victorian and contemporary and its color was a welcome surprise on the red carpet. The look was soft, feminine and minimalist, one that worked well for Sonam. She looked lovely.

  1. Love your Review !! So accurate, she looks like she popped right out of a fairy tale. Upload pics of the train too that was too good to be missed.

  2. She looks absolutely gorgeous but the make up is not on point and could have been better. I feel that they go wrong with the make up in Cannes with the Indian actors .

  3. Just an observation unrelated to Sonam, applies to all the Indian actors on this page at Cannes, the photographers behind them always seem to be clicking someone else’s pics. Is it because they aren’t internationally famous or is there some other reason??
But it was a good surprise to see Aishwarya’s Michael Cinco gown mentioned on E News

    • I had similar doubt but my observation in this regard: On the red carpet it is usually not one but two celebrities walk, one after the other with some gap. When one poses for photogs on the left side, the other poses for the ones on right according to protocol. So it just appears as if the ones behind Sonam aren’t interested in her, when actually the ones in front of her are clicking her exclusively.

  4. Bad workmanship on the giant flower at the back but at least the hair and makeup are better and she is smiling. This is her comfort zone and it shows. She was too ill at ease in the Ralph and Russo.

  5. All the femininity of that gown is lost at the back. What is that even? A bow, a flower, an artichoke? L’oreal rarely gets Indian makeup right and I wish the celebs would call them out on it. That yellow at the eyes is unfortunate.

  6. Ugghh. The colour is boring. I had high hopes from Sonam and now I feel so let down.
Is she staying another day or is this it?

  7. The corset really looks like something to be worn UNDER the clothes. The design is not polished and red-carpet worthy. Even the giant flower at the back is all droopy.
Yet again, this look did not trackage well on the red carpet. I wish she would go for sleeker designs and leave the huge pouffy dresses behind.

  8. I can’t breathe just looking at how impossibly snug the corset is. Why can’t they fit her better in these dresses..I imagine the team spends hours sourcing and then at fittings—all for what? She is literally squeezing herself into these outfits.

Bridal couture on the red carpet is excessive. This might be OK at an editorial shoot but here it is just comical.

  11. I am very surprised by her picks this year. This does nothing for her. Its a boring non-color with a a giant flower(!) at the back, which looks like a diy project. Not feeling this even a little bit. Very disappointed.

      • Anyone who writes anything supporting her is either sonam herself or rhea or friend or PR?
Darling, where there is hate, there is love. Squeeze it into your brain that sonam’s style, her work despite her falls and fails are just as appreciated by people, as despised by you. Unless you identify yourself as a troll or her ex, or a jealous actress, no one here is her PR or anyone related. We’re good ol mango people who like her body of work and fashion outings.

For all the preaching about how everybody got an opinion you girls sure as hell do bring down others who see anything different from your dogmatic point of view. I get that for some girls it’s automatic to confuse their feelings on Sonam’s aesthetic with their rejection of the privilege she comes with, so hate sincerely if that’s what you want your world to look like. But if her fashion resonates with some of us, inspires us and makes me feel gorg- let us feel gorg. Don’t name call, don’t allege we the PR, the friend , the nanny, the surrogate mother. Just try and absorb the beautiful fashion she serving.

          • @anuj, Sorry I accidentally disliked your comment. I actually thought the dress is romantic and the nude color really suits her and makes her look better than bold colors we have seen her in previously. I even like the touch of yellow in the back, so don’t know why so much hate on her. But if this makes you feel better, not everyone has a sense of style and fashion, so let the haters do their job. End of the day it’s Sonam there on the red carpet doing her job, not them. Also one should just give their comment on her look, they are entitled to their opinion but doesn’t mean they can leave disrespectful comments on her. That’s totally uncalled for. As if they can’t stand the sheer presence of Sonam. They won’t even spare someone liking any of her looks.

Once again want to say I really really loved the look on her. And at sonamhaters, no I don’t even watch Hindi movies so don’t start hating on me now lol.

            • Nobody hates Sonam… We are only have an opinion on what she wore, her fashion choice and NOT her as human.

So lets drop the categorising. I didn’t like any of her fashion choices – on the red carpet, doesn’t mean I hate her as a person. This is a website about celebrity fashion and there are bound to be opinions in both direction.

              • Maybe you didn’t, I didn’t check your comment, but if you read the comments here, most of them stop somewhere at commenting on her dress, and say disparaging things like how she looks like an auntie or a drama queen or an old hag something else. I have been an old reader of this blog and I see this a lot. So, not just making this up.

        • This. Its okay to not like Sonam but why attack those who do. I am not liking some of her outings this year but some do find her pretty in all of them. Similarly I liked Mahira most this year and loved Deppika’s pantsuit look but there are plenty who might disagree. To each their own.

  13. I’m liking the choice of Bridal couture considering she just tied the knot (also I’m a sucker for bridal wear). Gels well with her current vibe (mehendi et al). I also love the back of the gown, it’s dramatic and different. However, I’m on the fence about the color though.

  14. Sigh-this is just unfortunate. Her smile is radiant but that is all that is good about the look. The back is horrendous and the color washes her out. Sonam has had multiple fantastic outings but this time; DP and Aishwarya’s Ashi Studio and Michael Cinco win Cannes.

  15. Sonam looks lovely. It’s a decent gown, although the bow is quite large. She has such a tiny waist. L’Oreal managed to get her make-up and hair right this time. I know that L’Oreal is promoting make-up but some of their products has been painted in layers on our gorgeous women. Makes me not want to purchase their line, despite the exciting colors they’re introducing.

For someone walking the carpet as an ambassador of a makeup brand have to say that in the close-ups the caked eyelashes and the pasty eyeshadow could have a patisserie if their own!

  17. Her smile and personality !!! Just so fabulous. Sadly, the dress is a disaster , where do I even begin? The top is a few cup sizes too small. The yellow patch on the back makes no sense. That giant thing? It looks like the crinkled paper used in packaging boxes. And the makeup looks totally off as well.

  23. Wow to say this is Inspired is too much as well as staying this understated and elegant . Is it an homage to the underskirt worn by Victorian ladies under their silk frocks
Both her Ralph and Russo which was a just like a collection of tulle with uninspired embroidery and this with the insipid colour was such a letdown .
And that horrendous trail . Vera Wang has such better designs and this is what she chose .

    • I agree. I am a Sonam fan but this has been her worst Cannes run. I did not like a single outfit. I am still waiting for her to match or better her first year at Cannes. People can correct me if I am wrong, but I think to some extent what they wear depends on designers who are willing to dress them. I think this year DPs Ashi dress was great. The rest IMO – not so much

      • Would be true if Sonam was a rookie in the fashion scene. Like her first outing in Jean Paul Gaultier. He was the only one who agreed to lend her couture. This isn’t her worst run. Everybody has forgotten her second year at Cannes which is rated the lowest in my book. Some of the shots I’ve seen both close up and from far look lovely for this Vera Wang. Its not her best choice. Her schedule is also shorter. She has too much on her plate. Marriage, Cannes, film promotion….Cannes took a back seat it seems.

    • They are always biased. Had Mahira worn this gown, it would have read “ that top looks like a spandex corset underwear with the girls crushed inside and that tulle is so kiddish with that unwanted (mismatched)yellow and extra load of “katran” that doesn’t do a thing for her( read Mahira), we are already scratching all over in discomfort, hope Mahira will do better next time, this was a huge miss”
      Hai na P&P, lol.

  27. Her face is radiant but that horrendous gown! What is it even? Looks like half Spanx half DIY dress. The colour is a washout and does nothing for her. For all the drama about her being a fashionista she should atleast pick a dress that looks like a professional designer made it. A great opportunity lost. Sigh.

Lipstick makes the look slightly dated (we can blame L’Oreal for that) but apart from that, not one thing to fault here! Feels fresh, modern and feminine. And no, I don’t work in PR. 😉

I Like that Sonam pushes boundaries when it comes to her appearances and feel that often the results are not what many of us are used to seeing as acceptable pretty or conventional dramatic.
In my opinion, the best thing about fashion is how it speaks in the language one chooses to interpret it – for both the wearer and for the one who sees it. She evidently curates her looks and is clearly enjoys putting her take on fashion out there. Others like Neha Dhupia, Kangana Ranaut, Diana Penty , Anushka Sharma, Kiran Rao, Malaika Arora and Anushka Manchanda also seem to have definite takes when it comes to their looks. Many of these girls have individual styles that are not on everyone’s wheelhouse but why not move on gracefully as opposed to getting personal. Peace.
