In Shehlaa

This appearance of Ms. Kapoor’s took us by surprise. The good run she was having seems to have come to a crashing halt.

In a lehenga by Shehla Khan and jaw-dropping diamonds by Chopard, Sonam attended this most recent event while at Cannes. And as lovely as she looked necklace-up, all else was anything but. Not a fan of the black lace over the off-white/dove-grey nor the choli. The lehenga just failed to strike a note with us.

A wealthy-young-Sicilian-widow-still-in-mourning-forced-to-attend-a-gala-to-snare-her-next-husband is not a good look on her. (Sorry, marathon Downton Abbey+Italian movie has let the imagination run.)

Check back later for better pictures.

  1. I see what you guys are saying but i actually find this look beautiful. I may get some heat for saying that but there’s just something… magical about this look. Like!
    Don’t attack me people!

    • Won’t attack. You’re absolutely right. She looks lovely and whimsical and ethereal…like she’s a rebellious Emma Woodhouse stepping out to go to a proper English ball.

  2. She looks drop dead gorgeous.

Most people in the Chopard party would have been wearing black. By your definition, they all look like rich people in mourning!

    • +1 Still smiling reading that punch line from P&P. I luv her neck up She luks very pretty…the rest is disappointing had the off shoulders been styled like a wide boat neck maybe this wouldn’t be that bad both off shoulder and midriff show doesnt click for me

        • What’s there to like about this look? She is way too pretty and tall . Why does she have to become a fashion victim?
Any one remembers her visit to Ferragamo studio wearing an ethereal sari..Why can’t she dress like that on global stage?

  4. I LOVE this look…hated the floral mess of a dress she wore on the red carpet, though!
I don’t get “mourning” from the look at all…
    The hair looks great!

    • Oh, and I’m so glad…finally sleeves where she won’t have to constantly pose with arms away from her torso! I was getting tired just looking at her pose like tht!

  5. haha I’m glad to see you guys had the same reaction. The off shoulder choli paired with the midriff show and the tacky fabric of the material produced a mess even instagram couldn’t save. However, I do feel that this look had potential if the choli was not off shoulder and just plain sleeveless and covered her neck, and she just added earrings instead of a necklace.

    • Agree – earrings would have been a better choice with that hair style especially if highlighting Chopard jewels was the main point. Also, is it just me or the two strategically placed embellishments/sequins on her upper chest look like misplaced nipples? Ok, I can’t believe I said that, but thats the first thing that jumped at me when I looked at this pic

      • LOL–now that u have said it, it does look like it! Wish the duppatta was plain in the upper half… But I dont find anything disastrous about the look. She is continuing her good run, indeed!

        • I kinda liked it but didnt think it was perfect. Now that you see it, i know whats “lacking”. The lace, nett dupatta etc does add a romantic touch to the look but the bare shoulders and mid riff were a tad bit much.

  6. Masaba, Nishka Lulla, and Shehlaa Khan need to retire from fashion. Their clothes are tacky and I am not sure why anyone would pick them to wear at Cannes of all places.

  7. Wow, how stunning does she look neck-up…hair and make-up is so perfect. I agree the look is really disconnected but I dunno it still not completely putting me off…I guess she is pulling it off!!!

  8. Like her here … but can’t stop laughing at ‘A wealthy-young-Sicilian-widow-still-in-mourning-forced-to-attend-a-gala-to-snare-her-next-husband’.

Agree with Sr, most in Cannes look like that :-/

  9. U r kidding right?!

I think she looks elegant, classy, feminine and etheral!

My first reaction was “WOW”…ususally I stare at her look and love it…but this was love at first sight…only few people can carry it off a la SK!

  10. She doesnt look as bad you guys think. There is something magical about it. While the choli is tacky, it doesnt look entirely horrible.

  11. WTHeyyyy! Tacky tacky tacky. Why, Sonam, why? Such a good run she was having.
Why wear Shehlaa? Not the most talented of designers, yet Sonam wears her repeatedly.
    Aaah, so much for friendship.
But necklace up, she looked gorg.

    Reply
    • Seriously, why wear Shehlaa…her designs are horribly tacky. Isn’t she the one who copied the gorgeous Zuhair Murad – Blake Lively outfit and put it on Karishma Kapoor?

      Reply
      • Yeap! That’s the one. She is so not talented and I give full marks to Sonam for still making it work somehow, even if only neck up. That designer is only gonna survive coz of her friendship with Sonam. What a shame coz there are so many talented designers around.

    • I agree… the lehenga is so tacky, I want to burn it!! That lehenga skirt is an eye sore.
It’s her face and her hair that really saves this look from being a disaster!

  12. I like this look, esp cause its NOT the same ol Manish Malhota and Sabyasachi. She looks lovely and the lehenga looks more like a modified Eli Saab gown with all the lace and the embroiery

  13. I love her waist up..the lehenga maybe not so much..but probably if the color hadnt been black but something else..(maybe ivory) would have loved the skirt too..but she does look absolutely magical!

  14. The choli is boring. I mean, really. Hate the sleeves. But otherwise okay. I wish it had not been black, you know? Any other colour would have been better.

  15. The lehenga is so blah. do these designers not really look at what they are creating?
The embroidery is bad bad bad, lacks creativity. TOTALLY.
Its terrible to see these women represent our countries fashion on a red carpet abroad so so poorly.

  16. I like it. Lace is not overpowering. Infact she looks dainty. Every outfit has been quite different so far. She continues to surprise me.

  17. Shes chanelling her inner Black widow!!!!!
First it was jhansi ki Raani in the white saree!!!!
It seems as though Cannes is no longer a film festival and turned into a costume ball!!!!

  18. Totally dislike…….she was doing so well so far…..why this mess ……there is only so far you should go with the princessy look…….

  19. she looks very pretty. Why are you girls always so cynical about everything? Do you have a 10/10 sartorial sense??
No right? Pls it would take you ages to look as good.
You guys always ridicule Aishwarya Rai no matter how nice she looks!!

  20. She needs to quit wearing shehla khan or whoever made this grotesque outfit. I mean clearly she has no personal say in what she wears, because if I saw myself in the mirror in that outfit, I’d throw a shit fit and refuse to leave the hotel room. The cut ouf the blouse itself should have been the first reason she rejects this. Sigh!

  21. How is she making this work! she looks ethereal !
Btw her Cannes style has been in a bit of a pattern, Princessesy gowns and midriffs .

  22. The whole outfit is so lacking – the blouse fit is off, the dupatta embroidery is off, the lehenga material looks bad. But despite all this, she looks whimsical neck up. I do like the necklace, it is for Chopard after all. But I agree with the earlier post of going with a sleeveless blouse and beautiful diamond earrings.

  23. It could have just been a strapless blouse.. those sleeves are just ugly. instead of white lining they should have gone for champagne color. I can just kill her for that necklace .. its just divine !!!

  24. I agree with you… am not on board with this outfit at all. I agree that she looks beautiful, neck up. The make up and hair is great… but that is not what this site is about. It is about the fashion choices, and as far as this one goes, it is nothing short of a disaster. She needs to embrace the less is more mantra. Yesterday her dress was awesome, cos it was simple but she had to go and add that necklace which was absolutely unnecessary. The girl is beautiful, and dressing in simple but striking clothes will do wonders for her.

  26. not feeling much of this look..but one thing i like about this girl is she do each and every look which are poles apart…totally different styles !!! unlike our very own vidya balan..who just keep on giving us same-oh-same look..

  27. Did she put the dupatta on top of necklace so no one steals it? That necklace reminds me of old Door Darshan serial “isi bahane”.

  28. The thing is, yes the black lace is a little overwhelming, but I think most people forget how much of a stark difference flash can make.

In all honesty, I think she looks very different. Would I have preferred the dupatta worn a different way? Yes.

  29. Fashion is always a statement. This is bollywood kitsch, and as such never a good look. If you are doing India, the fabric and workmanship should be Indian. Else you are just a desi barbie…
