In Twos

Diwali festivities saw Sonam in a Raw Mango sari and blouse at one event and then in a lehenga from Aseem Kapoor featuring an intricate top. Between the two, was drawn to the Aseem a whole lot more even though it had more of a boho-vibe than a Diwali festive one.

  1. The first outfit is a kutchi kanjari.
Please don’t brandish it as bohemian.
It’s local to a huge region of Gujarat and Rajasthan.

It’s like calling phulkari or paithani as bohemian.

And u should be happy that she is wearing an outfit celebratory of our country’s roots, rather than falling for facade of the western influenced bralette blouses our bolly ladies wear even for a holy festival.

  3. Payal, what according to you is a diwali appropriate outfit?
The first outfit is perfectly good for diwali.
In fact, thousands of women wear this traditional outfit for diwali in a large stretch of border regions of our paschim bharat.

  4. Sonam’s Boho look is pure nostalgia…we would dress up like this on school sports day representing the local banjara tribes of Hyderabad:) including that 90s long bindi!

  5. Payal,

Thinking aloud, does cultural appropriation apply within India?

From the comments it appears that the skirt look is culturally rooted for a particular community with its identity inherently linked with donning it. Its not as generic as a saree where the type is now identified by where its weaved.

Can we just throw on an outfit like this for a festive season without having the roots to wear it? Now I feel Sonam is making a costume out of it without understanding the essence of it.

  6. This girl looks amazing these days in ethnic wear…calling it bohemian is an insult to the arts and crafts of India, HHC. I believe her looks are plenty appropriate for Diwali…try telling that to the other blingy outfit wearers….Sonam and her mother’s jewelry collection rocks.
