Sonam at Cannes 2013: The Great Gatsby Screening

Comment image 97

For her appearance on the red carpet, Sonam went traditional in Anamika Khanna Couture wearing a white lace sari with a long embroidered jacket that gave it a modern touch.

What made the look stand out though was the pearl nathni (from Sunita K jewellery line) which was the only piece of jewellery that she added to the look. It added a sassy vibe to the look, a move we quite liked.

We predict though this will evoke some strong reactions from you. Tell us, love it, hate it, would’ve rather seen it done else where?

  1. BRAVO, Sonam! A look only you could pull off with elegance! And yes, because i’m indian…it makes me proud she took the classic indian look and novelized it for the red carpet.
I wouldn’t miss mentioning the dark lips and the eye makeup which took the look up by a few notches!

  2. I think I love it!
I mean where else could you possibly do it? At the Bollywood 100 tribute? Yes, but it’s so apt for the Gatsby premiere and the Cannes opening.
I mean, it’s all about grandeur and she did grandeur!
Wish Pernia’s shop would sell items like these, instead of overrated manish malhotras

  3. As you say, it brings some edge to the whole style. She made the right call be not adding any other piece of jewelry. I understand why she decided to wear the jacket because it’s rather cold in France these days, and it doesn’t take away from the whole look.

I love it, she pulls it off really well.

  4. The addition of the “nathani” has such an exotic vibe. Love the saree. That jacket is quite stunning. Her make-up is really well done as well.

  5. When i first saw this i was a little disappointed but, the more i look the more i like. The long jacket and the hair no longer bother me. She pulls it off and looks fab!

  6. Love the saree+jacket take on our traditional saree. The nathni is overwhelming though, it’s kind of too big for her face… Wish she opted for a pair of show stopping kundan earrings instead. Also, the make up seems to Rekha inspired, she does look like Rekha in a few angles.

    • Totally agree. Love the overall look… The hair, make up and the nathani. The jacket adds a dramatic touch, but the sleeves just make it look frumpy… Taking away from the delicateness of the lace saree.

  7. There is no such thing as natural or effortless with this girl, if her country thinks she’s the most stylish of them all then something’s wrong somewhere. God damn, that nath with that kind of a sari. So trying hard, so signature Sonam Kapoor

  8. I like the saree, the jacket, the old-world hair and the dark berry lips! Hate the make-up otherwise…too cakey and the concealer is one shade too light!

Love the concept of the nathni with the ensemble, but can’t seem to get on board with this particular nathni ! Wish it was a pearl encrusted Marathi nath…

  9. I think she looks great. Sadly, no one really cares about her appearance. It’s misleading to think that hers does, but it only truly matters to the Indian media. Still, if she can work it, why not?

      • lol…I am not sure how people like Sonam and Mallaika go to Cannes. i dont know if u just need to be rich to go there on the red carpet or must have achieved something in the field of Cinema. If its the latter, then I dont why Sonam is there.
Nevertheless, i like watching what she/any Indian wears to such events. Especially if its Indian wear.

    • agreed. the only word that comes to mind is Bhootni. very halloweenie look for me. the pink look of hers is the best i’ve probably ever seen her.

  12. Love that she’s (and Vidya) have done a 20’s look – an Indian 1920’s look! – to match the movie being screened. Well played, ladies, well played.

  13. Expected something OTT from her but I don’t mind it here. However, I strongly feel that her lipstick shade should’ve been diff, c’z its clashing against the nath.

  14. I have to say, I love it! The saree, the jacket, the hair… everything works great. That said, the nose ring only works when she is not smiling. More like when she is posing. Maybe it will better fit in a photo shoot.

I give her kudos for trying this look and pulling it off. She does the look much justice with her confidence.

  15. there is alot going on with the dress..she looks abit frumpy in one of the poses and desperately needs a bag to hold. her foundation is too severe but i do love her hair and make up otherwise. she should have done away with that nose ring and gone for jhumkas instead seeing as that coat is so over embellished. too many things to focus on

  16. How she looks aside …. she does look a bit constricted and uncomfy! The red-carpet confidence and spunk is somehow missing … may be she is just nervous 🙂

  17. Personally I think Sonam’s choice of Indian wear is actually less brave than being proclaimed. Nobody (except Indians/Indian media) will dare heavily criticise this look, in case they overstep cultural sensitivities.

It also means that this look will only be remembered in the Indian media; and if she is then technically dressing for Indians, then why not a dramatic nath?
Perhaps she wasn’t happy with the responses to her vintage Givenchy etc from past years.

    Her face though, is stunning.

    • Right but at the festival itself she’s going to be seen and photographed by thousands of international media.
Kudos to her for going all out!

  18. She looks good but I feel she does not look confident in this outfit. Also fitting of the sleeves is somewhat sloppy. Where is the usual fierce confidence she always carries?

  19. I love it. It’s Gorgeous with her stature and the make up is so much better than last year, love the no-jewellery styling, Nathni adds to the drama quotient. def. one of the best. She is also looking really pretty. I just wished she had smiled more, you know the trademark Sonam Kapoor smile. That’s her secret weapon according to me.

  20. That’s a odd shape on the nath. Should have gone for a larger round one or a smaller round one. It looks like an eyesore on an otherwise amazing look right now.

  21. I do love the thought behind the outfit….an Indian ‘dress’ for the red carpet…the colour, the train of the jacket, one statement peice of jewellery…it all goes with trying to do a modern take on an Indian outfit…does she pull it off? A lot better than anyone else could have!!

  22. This is wrong on so many levels. The loose frumpy sleeves, the nose ring two sizes too big, the awkward and uncomfortable body language.

She never wears Indian designers on the red carpet but this time she probably wanted to upstage Vidyas Indian wear but hasn’t been able to come any wear near Vidyas mind blowing looks. She should’ve let Vidya take care of bringing Indian royalty to Cannes.

And btw, she has got negative international press for this look.

    • Negative International press? She got special article dedicated to her in Russian Elle, French Gala and many others, how is that negative press, you tell me I understand many don’t like her saree couture thing. But International press loved it.

      • Most of us, Indians, are very conservative when it comes to Indian look. We have done it a certain way for million years and want to stick to it, and find it unacceptable when the rules are broken.

That is why I am happy she is putting a bold foot forward on the international stage. For many who have no idea what a Indian wear is “supposed” to be, this look might come across as amazing.

    • Remember pictures only capture a moment in time. Just because she seems uncomfortable here doesn’t mean she was uncomfortable in this outfit. I don’t see anything wrong in the body language. It’s not the traditional hand on hip pose, but why does it have to be? I think she looks fine. You might be thinking too much about it.

  23. I have searched for her mom Sunita Kapoor Jewelry so many times but to no avail. Does her mom make jewelry JUST for Sonam only?

Is there ANY retailer in India that carries Sunit Kapoor Jewelry line? Please help. thank you.

  24. I love the nathini with this saree and I love the colour the lips bring. I am on the fence about the pairing of the jacket with a saree that is grand on its own… Sonam looks amazing, no doubt.

  25. While Vidya looked beautiful in her Indian attire, Sonams looking like a caricature especially in pictures where she’s smiling. I hope she tones it down a notch (or two) and stops embarrassing us on an international platform.

She needs to STOP looking like a character from a costume drama all the time. Somehow she and Rhea have started to think that thats what gives her the fashionista status. She can just let her beautiful hair loose, wear a gorgeous gown with understated makeup and she’ll shine like a star.

out fit : sometimes , just sometimes less is more.
i wonder y she chose this tent anyways…hmmm

  27. the nathni was kundan- not pearl if u see the closeup shots…

personally i would have liked the size smaller than this..the drama is good, the size isnt

  28. Like they say, always take off one thing before you leave home.

It should have been either the jacket or the nosering. Both together, not to forget the dark makeup, and the look loses focus.

That gorgeous sari is lost in the crowd of too many things.

Also, her expressions are so fake. Give me Kangana’s pout anyday.

  29. It’s ironic. Sonam is at Cannes only because she is representing a makeup brand (Loreal) yet her make up is god awful. It looks so ashy, and in the pics where her head is turned and you can see her neck, there are two distinctl colours: BROWN and WHITE. I don’t know why Indian’s refuse to embrace their natural skin colour. Sonam has beautiful dusky skin, she should really learn how to embrace it.

  30. I thnk she is trying to fuse together new and old (maybe 100 yrs of cinema)? I like the idea of fusion here, but to me the execution failed. The dark make up looks very wrong and takes away focus from the nath for a moment. As a result Sonam looks like she is trying very hard to be different but the effect is not working (she looks pale and washed out). The jacket could have been better fitted and the saree drape could have been made more interesting,. Instead it looks like she is wearing a jacket (a matching one, mind you) to ward of the cold.

  31. You know my instinctive reaction to this was “that nathni must bruise her lips when she smiles”…and smiling to Sonam is like the air to the birds…her most natural, least contrived accessory;and when she consciously tries not to, this happens… awkward, bumbling poses where she looks like she might at any moment burst into howls of laughter screaming “I can’t take this seriously, can you?”

  32. There is just too much going on in this outfit. In theory it should work, but
Neither the outfit nor the body language make any fashion statement.

  33. She’s clearly so uncomfortable with the nath.. her trademark smile is missing..or maybe she’s giving this poignant look purposely to match the retro indian look.. any which ways..she comes across as very unconfortable and costumey.. y does she feel this constant need of mixing and matching things that usually don’t blend well is beyond me..

  35. I love the whole concept and look. But, the saree just seems too clumsy to me and the hair little too unkempt. The nafhini looks amazing!

  36. Its not the clothes or the nathni that I dislike – its the makeup! Something about the foundation or the lipstick doesn’t translate well in these pictures. Or she could have chosen a more orangey red as opposed to a wine one. She probably looked much better in person. Loved her in the Dolce Gabbana look though

  37. i liked sonams version of the indian look than vidya balans. sabyasachi needs to experiment. vidya’s top to toe styling, design was almost the same as what sabyasachi did for that unknown model at cannes last year.

and to add, sonam just wore a nose-ring to depict ‘indianess’ whereas sabyasachi gave vidya madamji, ear rings, double necklace, nose ring, bindi what not.. she looked suffocated!! lol xx

  38. i personally don’t like the jacket…but hats off to her for bringing Indian look to the red carpet! i like that she avoided the boring gowns! why is it that her makeup is perfect all the time except in Cannes where its cakey n overdone??

  40. Not sure why no one has commented that the saree has no drape. It is not even tied properly- look how the pleats arent even falling properly. I am aghast at the petticoat length being so short. Also a designer of Anamika’s stature should know better than too work lace so much that it just hangs and looses drape.Shows designers poor techincal skills.
And again the sleeves of the jacket is what is the issue in adding bulk to sonam’s gorgeous frame/ The sleeve should ve ended where the golden embroidery ends.
