In Elie Saab Couture

At the charity gala, Sonam was seen in a Elie Saab Couture gown from the Spring 2016 collection. This particular collection had quite a few looks that featured the draped sari pallu element. As you can see her gown had that shirt meets a lehenga feel to it.

Now, we know Sonam loves her Elie Saab and I can see why she picked this particular piece from the collection. She probably thought this would be a great way to wear something Couture and still add that desi touch.

Except, we really think A) she should’ve gone with an Indian designer (where is an Anamika Khanna when you want one!) or B) just picked something different from the collection. This gown really didn’t seem to translate that well off the runway. Not only did it feel uber costumey, it made a really tall girl like Sonam look like she was 4 feet tall. She didn’t look statuesque at all.

As you can tell, we weren’t fans. 😛

Update: Sonam made it to Saif’s party which is where the third set of pics is from.

  1. Beautiful fabric, that is all. The belt, fit of the top all buttoned up, just look terrible. She just tries too hard and puts in too much effort to the clothes she wears to special events and they mostly turn out pretty bad. The tikka on her forehead is completely unnecessary considering the fabric and all the beading on the sleeve. I do like her make up.

  2. Terrible. This gown is over designed – the buttons don’t line up, the placket is pulling, the pallu element is too much and the belt is hideous for this fabric.

    • It’s an eye sore and i am so so happy that P+P have finally made a good judgement call on Sonar’s outfit. The shirt collar for me was the worst part. Awful choice.

      • “have finally”? seriously? It´s just tiring when users think they can police what P&P feel about what Sonam Kapoor is wearing! Whether it´s your personal taste or not, i don´t see why their feels MUST match your judgement or anyone else´s . The cattiness present in most of Sonam posts is just beyond annoying & so uncalled for.

  3. Besides the fact that she looks hilariously overdressed, she was the worst dressed celebrity at this gala. Everyone else kept it relatively simple and elegant, and here she was with an atrocious outfit and that maang teeka.

    • I bet she thought she looked amazing and stole the show! Sonam on her snapchat was like ‘hey guys should i wear couture?’ in that whiney bratty tone.. she is a beautiful girl and has so much potential to shine but i think ego is her downfall in the dressing up department.

  4. I’m usually happy to see her take risks and have fun with fashion, but this was not the time or place. Why try to grab eyeballs and trump the guests of honor in that awful costume best reserved for the bonfire? I agree, P&P, an understated Anamika Khanna would have been a great route to go.

  5. This has to be the worst she has done.
What’s up with the maang tika? Is it her wedding reception or sth?
She is majorly overdressed to the point that it is hilariously embarrassing.

  6. Too much going on here. I don’t know where to start from. The belt, the maang tikka, the ugly net on sleeves, the collared blouse all clash badly. Only her make up is the salvaging factor here. Sonam, my darling why did u disappoint when u were least expected to do so! Ramblings of a diehard sonam fan 🙁

  7. Sonam is ALWAYS overdressed and that has kind of become her signature style. But can she please not embarrass us by turning up looking this OTT at a dinner where someone else is the guest of honour. Man she really has some bad judgement or a severe ego. This time even Aishwarya knew better and was so elegant with her clothing choice.
And now on the outfit itself. Other than being so OTT and completely inappropriate for the occasion, specially with that maang tikka, it is also such a talkfest. The placket looks unfinished, the sleeves look tacky. The fit is awful on her.
Sorry for the rant, just can’t believe my eyes saw this monstrosity.

    • I know it’s a total face-palm moment, but the only person it’s embarrassing for (if at all) should be Sonam 🙂
It’s really strange to think that actors are representing ‘us’.
Most of them are too far removed from reality to come back to earth, thanks but no thanks ! 🙂

The ones that do achieve milestones, esplly overseas, do it through sheer talent, and sometimes good support and PR systems, among a myriad of other reasons and against hurdles.
We can feel proud, but it’s not our achievement either 🙂

  8. wow im speechless at how bad this look is. it is soooo unflattering!! she looks dumpy and short. the fact that sonam chose this now makes me think that she literally just goes for the brand without any ounce of logic on how it looks. and honestly elie saab came up with that?? unbelievable.

  9. How to determine if you should wear a maang tikka or not: Is it your wedding? Go ahead. Is it a close friend/ family members wedding? Fine but don’t outshine the bride. Is it a fancy dress competition/ costume ball/ play dress up-type of event? By all means, have fun with it! Any other event? NO!

  10. Lesson of the day: indian designs are best left to indian designers to do them justice. Iam yet to come accross a non-desi designer who does justice to lehengas.

So much white is swallowing Sonam completely & photographs horribly. The belt + pouch make things worse. Lining the shirt as presented on the runway really ruins the already tricky outfit.

What a waste of beautifully intricate embroideries. Another fail from Elie Saab. Strike 2!

  11. I wish she had gone with an Indian designer too and the outfit does make her look heavier (the model looked better in this) but I actually don’t think it is over the top for the occasion. I think the shirt collar keeps it from going too grand. If this were by an Indian designer, I don’t think we would have been calling her overdressed.
She looks nice, not her best, but certainly not worthy of the venom being spewed here.

  12. Poor girl…!!!! So much pressure to stand out as a fashion icon that she ends up choosing the most outrageous outfits for most grand scale events.

  13. That belt, that collar, that sleeve, that ugly embroidery, that maangtika …ugh ! Only thing positive is the comparatively better makeup ,the worst sonam has ever dressed and she’s given a LOT of bad looks off late !

  14. I agree that this is not the most flattering outfit on her. I love the skirt part – it’s the top half of the outfit that goes into the OTT territory! I actually like the mang tikka – it adds a nice ethnic touch. I also credit her for wearing flats (at least I think she is) – not many would consider the option.

  15. Oh no… here she goes confusing another event with her wedding…

I have to ask, who (if ever) dresses like this..?? 😀
    It’s so comical I can’t even…

  16. My comments were not posted…waaaah! So, I’m gonna try again. If the entire gown were two separate pieces (as in a top and long skirt) and not worn together, it may have worked. I’m so disappointed because she got all wrong. A maang teeka…wth?

  17. It’s rare, that she ever goes wrong.

She is young and has a great body. I always fail to understand that why her makeup and dresses don’t channel that vibe more frequently. Hardly seen her don fresh faced makeup or wear casual, body con, graphic printed clothes. Elie saab has become her signature move for such events and according to me it ages her and washes out the cheerful personality she has.

Her stylist and her makeup artist need to note this down!

  18. Not only is she OTT and event inappropriate…that outfit itself is a monstrosity…
