Miss Mad Men Miss

Per her tweet, Sonam was going for a look inspired by the AMC series Mad Men that follows an advertising company set in the 60s. Full skirts with fitted bodice, just-below-the-knee sheath dresses dominate the series presented fabulously by the female stars January Jones, Christina Hendricks and Elizabeth Moss.

Coming back to Sonam, we can’t but feel a wee bit disappointed. The dress itself was too long with barely any volume and the bodice was too loose. It felt like a cross between a sheath and a full-skirt and not one that we liked much.

  1. Mad Men = Best eye candy on TV. Janey Bryant is doing such an awe-inspiring job with the look of that show. And of course, Christina Hendricks is absolutely stunning. Sonam’s look does, I’m afraid, fall a little flat. The necklace is lovely, though.

    • So true @SAl(SS)! The women of “Mad Men” look so delicious that I’m surprised that Sonam would even try to emulate that look. The standard is just too high for her to scale it. Just compare the two photos and see which one you are going to sigh over…

  2. No word on that ridiculous excuse for a bag? The dress fits her odd and looks like a product of some highschool needlework class. Necklace is pretty!

  3. THis dress is such a MISS from what the Mad Men Misses wore!
In fact it looks like a dress my mum got me stitched for my 6th birthday. Even that was far prettier..hehehe..Sorry Sonam, you could do better! 🙁

  4. she looks quiet nice, wish it was another colour. I have worn plenty of such frocks when i was in my tweens. stitched locally. girly, inexpensive, comfortable.

  5. Its kind of embarrassing that Sonam, our resident fashionista, would compare her black, lifeless dress (which looks like she made at home) with the beautiful, iconic style of the 50-60s dresses that Mad Men counts as inspiration. Neither the look/style or dress measures up.

  6. Maybe if the hair was different with a lil less heavy necklace n shoes? nevermind..i just cant help notice those dots n funny lookin sleeves. The fit is so important if ur just gonna do a all black dress n that too 50s.

  7. I love Mad Men with a passion, so I’m probably going to be a little unnecessarily harsh with Sonam’s outfit. That dress is unfortunate – it looks more like a product of the horrendous 80s. I think she was going for a modern interpretation, but honestly, clothes from the early 60s are so classic in their silhouettes that they really don’t need to be updated. All three dresses worn by the leading ladies in that picture could easily be worn in this era without looking dated.

I’m beginning to feel that Sonam has pretty terrible taste in bags. I loathe the Dior bag she always carries around, and the purse she paired with this outfit looks like something a child playing dress-up would carry.

The necklace is quite beautiful, and would pair wonderfully with a sari.

  8. it all looks so shabby …. the cut, the stiching, the fit, the length, the material – all off …. and sonam needs to let go of her obsession of pairing western dresses with polki necklaces …. she does it with alarming regularity and the effect is always blah! ….

if you want to pair the two, then its better to go the deepika route – the green dress she wore a couple of days back with polki earings …fabulous ….

i saw her interview for this event on tv .. her make up with unduly harsh and gaudy ….

bounce back quickly sonam. This appearence does you no credit

    • Hahaha….ironic comment since apparently you are not above reading all the “spleen”- as you put it. We judge the taste or lack of taste of these women and you judge us!

    • I find myself agreeing with your comments all the time! 🙂 The hating is a general Internet thing though – people are way harsher and more critical in the comments section of a webpage than anywhere else, it seems to me. I am definitely not a fan of this look (or many others), but a celebrity sporting a bad look should ideally not be the target of bitter mockery or low blows, I would think.

    • yeah but for a change here they are talking about her styling or lack there of. With “certain” other celebrities, posters take it way too far and get really personal with their vitriol ..

    • “poor women” …. i don’t think anyone featured on this blog is ‘poor women’ literally or figuratively …..

…. As for spleen, here we just talk about fashion. No one gets personal about their weight, life, marriage, boyfriends, looks, age etc etc

…. Criticising bad clothes on a fashion blog ? …. Dear god, how bitter of us hags …. So what do you suggest we do instead ….. every time someone is dressed badly, we are all going to get together and give her a virtual hug and virtual cookies and milk and say – ‘never mind tomorrow is another day’

        • Well, think about it this way; if you were featured on this blog wearing something that many didn’t agree with, how would you have people comment on it? Sure, you’d be open to criticism, but what kind of tone would it take for it to go from critical to mean? This isn’t addressed to anyone in particular; I genuinely think that it’s something worth thinking about, and not necessarily something that has one right answer. One might think that these ladies open themselves up to some “this is horrible. how dare she” comments by being a public figure and reaping the benefits of being one, while someone else might say that criticism should be kept civil whether it is addressed to a person face-to-face or to a celebrity’s picture. Furthermore, how one would define civility in terms of blog comments is entirely subjective, too.

          • I agree Sal(ss) . I never subscribe to the view that just because the person is a celebrity, everything goes. Absolutely not. On the other hand, people should also not get so sensitive that they cannot accept the slightest criticism of their favourites.

I think P&P anyways filter out the comments that go over the line. Specifically to this post, i went back and read all the comments. The worst people said was – that her dress looked like it was stitched at home. is that venting spleen ?
‘Thaiexpat’ is questioning how ‘bitter’ we must be in real life to have something negative to say about a dress. I believe that comment was more personal than anything said about sonam’s clothes.

  10. i love the dress and shoes on january i havent watched the mad men series but from the picture it looks like sonam was trying to fool everyone. i follow her on twitter but this look of hers was such a let down. next time sonam should take it easy and create such a hype she should let her look speak for itself.

  11. I don’t rememebr seeing Sonam looking this bad…her outfit, hairstyle, bag everything is so amateurish…considering she carries herself so well other times…

I think the reason the dress looks so ill-fitting is becoz it was probably made by her local darzi and is not a designer outfit or an actual dress from the Mad Men collection…

  12. since i already vented my heart out to Soanm via tweets.. i be gentle here otherwise comment might to get approved:)
some say why so harsh, cause the girl has set very high standards for herself..resident fashionsita and all
this being her appearance after a while, is total let down.
honestly she still look sick from her recent illness.
her face has lost the freshness and she has lost lots of weight..
whole outfit is a big letdown, not even her mom’s gorgeous jewelery can save the ouft fit for her this time
her makeup & hair are really bad as well..and that bag …lets not even go there.

  13. Yes it is a cheap dress. LOL! Come on guys give her props for wearing a $25 dress. Didn’t you all complain she always wears brands? Now finally she wore something we would wear 😛 She was merely inspired by the series….I don’t think she went all the way. I have more issues with her make-up!
