In Anavila
Anavila launched her store in Mumbai and lending her support at the launch was Sonam Kapoor wearing a white sari with a leaf-pattern blouse, both from the designer.
Jewellery from Amrapali and a white potli finished out her look. Waist up, she looked cute. Waist down, the issue was with the pleats. Them being a lot more off-centered made the safety pins stand out a whole lot more. A problem easily solved by making the pallu pleats a bit more broader. Am just glad to see that even the stars sometimes need extra help with their pleats. 😛
So are you a “pin it everywhere” kinda a person or are you more the “I go pin-free always“! 😉
Catch her inside jetting out of Mumbai still in the Anavila sari.

Someone once told me that the pleats go to the right side of the belly button. Since then I have always tried it that way, and the end result always looks nice.
Perhaps a left handed person would pleat that way? I’ve seen it this way
Assamese Mekhelas are worn with the pleats to the right. Otherwise, normally saree pleats are to the left.
That was my Mum’s rule when she taught me how to wear a saree, and I agree, it looks much nicer.
pin free always
Certain sarees can absolutely NOT be worn without pins. Depends on how heavy/slippery the fabric is. Personally, I don’t feel confident going without pins just because I wear sarees extremely infrequently.

I need at least 3 pins to keep my saree in place. I’m the star of amateur-hour!
One single pin and nowhere near as obvious as exhibit above.
Dear Payal
Any sari officianado will tell you that the pleats have to be a little off-centre. That’s the first thing my mom taught me while teaching me sari-draping. I actually like sonam’s sari being nicely pleated and pinned in place. Am sick of seeing these carefully careless drapes on actresses of late. I like that sonam went the clean and fuss free route. Not everyone needs to look like they just came out of a postmodern art exhibition 🙂
Sonam luks pretty..Talking abt ‘to pin’ or n’t to pin’, it depends upon d fabric..thou I never pinup pleats in front(d visible part)..I pinup d pleats n dat part is neatly tucked in..Bt I too hv dis issue of pleats geting sift to d side, no matter hw neatly I tuck dm in centre! Thankx for sharing d tip on hw dis problem cn b sorted by making broader pleats! 🙂
Only amateurs need pins! I agree the pleats need to be off-centre, but an exposed pin like here is just gauche. Can’t deal with how desi stars are usually on point with westernwear and don’t care how uncomfortable they look in their sarees. And yes, I’d rather see someone rock a saree like they were born to it, with panache and confidence — even if it means a trailing pallu or less than permanent-pleats — than someone wear it like a costume, as here. A saree is a drape, a living garment, boss — let its life show!
PS. which is why I’m a Kangana fan — she manages both sarees (the check Anavila she was featured in a few days ago) and dresses with elan.
I actually like that she’s pinned up and looking neat. Too often now we are seeing unkempt, messy and sloppy drapes masquerading as personal style.
+100. Neat rather than raggedy. Some “peeps” personal style is indeed unkempt + shabiness. Lol.
She looks best of the lot in those tired- washed down – needlessly hyped anavila sarees.
You are so spot on with the ‘needlessly hyped’ thing. My mom has more beautiful sarees than these which have no designer names attached to it. I think its the same with most ladies. I do not understand what is the new ‘value added’ to these sarees. Oh I see, worn by celebrities.
In my opinion, Anavila’s sarees work like palette cleansers for the eyes. After all the Manish Malhotra bling, Sabyasachi heavy embroidery or floral prints, Raw Mango saturated colored banarsis, brocades and chanderis, her sarees fall in the completely fuss free and easy on the eyes kind of category. Hence the appeal.. I do like them personally but similar looks can be easily created with simple linens and pastel printed blouses found at local fast ajar melas or even emporiums in Delhi.
Dastakar* melas
You NAILED it with ‘palette cleansers’ for the eyes. So agree! Its a matter of perception, I believe. Just because something comes out of a designer label, doesn’t mean it HAS to have some off-beat element to justify the label. Simplicity has its own uniqueness and Anavila sarees come under that category in my opinion. In fact these sarees bring so much of styling scope with them that you can have your own personal style with an anavila saree on. See how Kangana has styled it:

So much swag! <3
Then you have Kiran Rao lending her quirk to such sarees or Tisca Chopra giving that touch of sophistication. And oh! must say, Sonam looks extremely pretty. That blouse looks great teamed with that saree. She looks so dainty & feminine!

So gorgeous!! I need that blouse
I thought the pleats supposed be off centered ?? Also the pin seems only to be visible in a few pictures, rest of the time it seems mostly covered
I am DEF a pin person lol
Why is she wearing such a boring saree. It’s she standing for the elections?
I wish you had also featured a picture of her hair with the strands of flowers.
love this look..
wish the pins werent that visible…
and yeah iam a pn person… can never manage without them
