Sari Style

Both these ladies chose saris to wear on the red carpet at the recent awards and though both attempted to stray from the usual (what’s usual to them), it was an Almost for both of them. Vidya looked a tad overwhelmed and Sonali’s blingy blouse was a deal-breaker. Oh well, these lovely ladies will just have to contend with a near Hit for this time.

  1. Read somewhere that, her parents gift her silk sarees every bdy and she wears it to the award shows, as she considers it lucky.. But sillk sarees with that big borders does nothing…For a change she should try Nalli for their traditional varieties and Palam silks for a touch of twist and simplicity

    • Interesting. I think it has indeed been lucky for her. She has been getting awards for paa last yr and ishqiya this yr.
I wish she wld pleat the pallu so that its less messy. Love the bindi with this look.
Nothing to say about sonali except such a gorgeous face and figure wasted in that cloth.

  2. Sonali’s saree & blouse reminds me of Madhuri’s outfit from the “Dhak Dhak karne laga” song !
And Vidya is drowning in all that silk, hair & bindi !!

  3. I think Sonali’s blouse looks awesome with that saree. It brings in a balance. And she looks so bright and lovely. That shade does wondrs for Indian skin!

  4. Near Hit?!?!
This is one of Vidya’s WORST looks ever – for such a stiff saree, she should have atleast pinned it up. She looks like she can barely hold it up.
And that hair?! Maybe an updo might have saved this from being such a disaster.
Sonali – satin saree and blingy blouse, she seems ready to break into an 80’s movie song.

  5. Sonalis saree is blah and very 80’s looking somehow as someones mentioned. Vidyas saree is beautiful but her hair! Its making her look so messy. Theres nothing wrong with wearing so many silk sarees but if you are a curvier lady they do add pounds to you especially in photos. I don’t really like the pinned pallu look, but maybe she could have draped it a little tighter to avoid looking sloppy?

  6. How is this a near hit for either of them? Sonali’s looks like a costume straight out of a 80’s hindi movie. The only thing missing is Jeetendra and a few white pots. And as for Ms. Balan – I do like the fact that she chooses indian wear over western but that doesn’t mean she has to look like shes been mummified. Another danger for her going to silk saree, big bindi and open frizzy hair look is the inevitable comparisons with Rekha. And no one can win that battle. She may have figured sarees suit her best.. but i am not convinced she has found her own unique style. And no, wearing Sabya’s day in day out is not a style statement its a lack of imagination.

    • i dont think “wearing sabya day in day out is …lack of imagination”.
He does a huge variety of traditional wear from kurthis to maxis to sarees. If wearing sabya is lack of imagination, then ladies who wear pants (or sarees or suits) every day shd also equal lack of imagination.

      • I am sorry but you misunderstand me. I did not say Sabya dint do different things… these mixed prints that he does is his own unique signature look. & that is a key point here Vidya doesn’t have a look that is her own. Throwing a Sabya on is not enough you have to make it your own otherwise what is the difference between you and a mannequin? And no, i wouldn’t undermine the aam junta like this. Yes we wear pants/sarees/suits, but there is definitely a variety- most people choose from churidars – patials, Straight leg pants – crop legged, skinny jeans to boyfriend and cotton sarees – crepe and everything in between and this is irrespective of budget.

        • I so agree with Clueless…..Rekha is the original and though Vidya does look nice in saris, she does need to find her own style, which is more distinctive…and having a style most definately does not mean wearing the same saris and hair ALL THE TIME! This doesn’t look real anymore..also timeless does not mean Boring and Uninspired! She is young and pretty…and successful to boot…it is the time to experiment somewhat now!

  7. Is Sonali wearing a saree? The front pleats at the waist make it look like a dress?

I agree that Vidya would have looked better had she pinned the pallu and worn an updo and different bindi.

  8. Okay, I love beautiful classic silk sarees as much as anyone, but Vidya Balan almost qualifies as a WTHey here. She looks like she just flung the saree on herself, not actually *draped* it. And the bindi is the wrong shade and totally the wrong size. The hair looks like she’s just walked out of the shower and air dried it. Nope, doesn’t work at. all.

  9. Sonali’s look is just not working for me – that blouse, the horrid way that saree has been draped looks like its coming loose, and the icing on the cake is that silly looking gold chain at the waist.

I love that Vidya chose to wear a Kanjeevaram – wish she had put more effort into her whole look though
