Unless you’ve been living under a stone, that Shilpa Shetty got married to Raj Kundra shouldn’t be news to you. Here are the first pics of the couple with Shilpa wearing a red lehenga-style sari by Tarun Tahiliani and Raj in a brocade sherwani by designer duo Shantanu and Nikhil.

The night before at her sangeet, Shilpa wore a gold anarkali again by designer Tarun Tahiliani. Congratulations to the happy couple.

  1. i love the colour of shilpa’s wedding outfit. and i love the peacock arm band. it doesn’t look like there were any famous or recognizable guests at the functions.

  2. So similar to Aishwaya’s style during her wedding but i like shilpas look. Very beautiful. The all over print on the lengha-sari is a bit of a dissapointment from tarun. Shamita looks fab in the car photo! Congrats to the couple!

  3. feel like theres too much happening everywhere. should have toned down the jewelry a bit as shes getting lost in all the bling. i think she has the potential to look a lot more classy rather than donning the whole rakhi sawant avtaar.

P.S.- totally envious of all that kundan!!

  6. for everyone who has a problem with jewelery, please don’t forget she is south indian and, traditionally, south indian brides are supposed to wear a lot of jewelery if they can afford it.

both of them look happy and gorgeous. wishing them the best.

  7. She looks SO beautiful! It’s nice that she really pulled out all the stops and donned all that jewellery. It looks more traditional, more celebrative, more gorgeous. She has the personality to carry off all the bling and hardware with grace and elegance, so I’m really glad there is no hint of minimalism here.

  8. And this is how an Indian sangeet and wedding is done. Take heed Isha Koppiker. Too much jewellery, bling and makeup is what Indian wedding style is about. Love this!!

    • Well said. Its an Indian wedding and its for somebody so popular in Bollywood – it has to be OTT ! To expect simple jewelery and a “classy” saree on a wedding is not right. I love the grandeur ! I love that they went all out with it ! She looks like an Indian Queen with gold everywhere form clothes to jewelery. Its her day and let her be.

  9. her face is so pretty…she’s glowing..each individual piece she is wearing is exquisite…The lehenga is very pretty…the jewelry lovely…But put everything together and we have a walking talking Christmas tree..

  10. Ha Ha this was to be expected from Shilpa. Crass! Post her engagement where she was overly decked in bling this came off as no surprise. Does this site have any pics from the Infosys supremo Murthy’s daughter’s wedding. Her reception output was simple, elegant and so classy.

    Reply
    • Whoa!!! did you honestly just call a bride crass on her wedding day?
fashion shouldn’t always be judged by western ideals: this is a traditional south Indian wedding, and being a South Indian myself I know that any less bling would be occasion inappropriate. Infact most of the bridal jewellery she wears is compulsory according to tradition.
Infosys Murthy’s wedding was more the exception than the norm, I’ve been to enugh South Indian weddings to know that.
Again, I’m amazed at the obnoxious tone of comments on this site. How exactly do you know that you are classier than her?
Did you see the grace with which she conducted herself against the racist attacks on tv?

      Reply
      • I agree with @belle_dresse on some points about Indian weddings. I just looked at the Infosys kid’s wedding pictures and Nah !!! There is no comparison…

Also, isn’t Shilpa in glamor business to start with? Would you like to see Infosys kid on movies? Also, Indian weddings are supposed be glamorous and the bride looks like a bride by wearing more bling than others and without making other people wear a uniform (Bride’s maids dresses in western weddings).

@belle_dresse I am OK with people’s freedom to express themselves though! I think I don’t have to be classier than somebody to express my opinion about them , these are public figures and I am part of the public 😉

        Reply
        • @koel: First of all, totally agree on the glamour biz thing!

And I DO believe in the freedom of expression, I wasn’t forbiding anybody from saying anything, just expressing MY amazement at the insensitivity (in my opinion) that it takes to call a bride crass!!!
I am constantly stunned at the obnoxious-ity on this site (cue : comments on the latest Priya Chatwal Sachdev post) and I just like pointing out that being nice, or even a little less cruel never hurts!!I visit a lot of fashion international fashion blogs where people are much milder and I am amazed at how vicious and condecscending we Indians are to our own kind!! (ex- the Sonam Kapoor post where a lot of people said that she probably begged Chanel to dress her!)That’s my opinion and people can ignore it!

Also, while a person can definitely comment on someone who is classier than them , I think that calling somebody crass implies that you think you are less crass. I mean if you thought you had less class than Shilpa you could hardly call her crass without being supremely hypocritical could you?

          @ Saya: Totally agree!!!

          • Oh ! I get it …. You are right !

We should stop the “Gali – Galoch” at the celebrities and just stick with criticizing the clothes and stuff in a more civil way ( like P and P remind us to do from time to time. )

  11. i am guessing the thing on her waist is a south indian thing even her look becos i see it alot in south indian movies. however she looks fantastic

  12. She looks great…I like her better in the Sangeet pic – positively glowing there!
…only if she would have toned down the jewelery a bit. The same type of necklaces from the engagement to the sangeet to the wedding..it’s a tad too much.

  13. That longer necklace was a bit too much, but for some reason I don’t hate the ensemble. She certainly looks happy, so that’s good enough for me!

  14. An indian bride should be decked out in all her finery – simplicity can be done on other days. Having said that I’m not loving the outfit, it certainly dosn’t look worth that amount of money and theres nothing unusual or special about it. Still Shilpa looks gorgeous.

  15. I am really happy that she found her beau….she seems really sweet and friendly and I wish her and Raj all the happiness (and bling!) in the world 🙂

  16. she looks stunning. the bling is off the hook..love it! the entire outfit is a bit blingy but thats what weddings are about..the bride has to stand out..dont forget ppl this is bollywood..imagine her being a simple bride and other ppl outdressing her? I think she looks fantastic..very traditional..very south indian. lovee love love.

  17. While a kamar band and baju band is worn by south Indians when they get married. The kundan overload is not south indian, Kundan jewellery is purely a north indian style of jewellery.

All said and done…she like most indian brides is dressed a bit too much but hey she looks good IMO

    Reply
    • That’s where you’re wrong, Hyderabad has a huge Kundan market (after, I think, Rajasthan) a lot of the precious stones can be found there so I wouldn’t say ‘purely… north indian…”

but I agree like all Indian Brides she is OTT, but she looks fab 🙂

      • The hyderabadi kundan jewels and pearls comes from the mughals and such that came and settled there…its not an art form that is indignous(sp?) to the region. A traditional south indian and specially telugu hindu does not wear such jewelery …at least as far as I know.

        • rightly said shi. kundan jewellery is not southindian. its more gold jewellery and precious stone jewellery even today. she shud have gone with southindian jewellery and not gone the same way aishwarya did for some reason.wud have loved a veil over the flower hairdo. and a nice round studded nose piece! love the red mango- motif (which is so southindian) lehenga but wud have loved a real saree which wud have her look like a real southindian lady.raj looks very good in traditional clothes. he looks like a raja here with sword et all!overall they look great in the traditional do!

          Reply
          • p.s. wud have loves a real silk southindian saree with borders. the work sarees are getting a bit too much! the traditional sarees are also coming with modern looks like work on a silk saree which costs lakhs of rupees. shilpa said on her blog that she didnt want to look like christmas tree on her wedding but guess she did look like one..lol 🙂

  18. Kundan Overdose! but she looks pretty
Ok….just curious…what would one do with the sarees and jewellery after the wedding…? Just save it like a souvenier and tone it down and wear it on different occassions?

    Reply
    • AFAIK, in South Indian culture, your wedding saree is kept for your valai kaapu (Indian baby shower) – you wear it then again. But you are also encouraged to wear it over and over again when you attend other people’s weddings.

As for the jewellery, normally they become heirloom pieces that you pass on to your children – daughters/daughter-in-laws or after a decade or so you exchange them for something else.

That’s what my Mom did 🙂

      • As far as I know, all over India, regardless of the region, all Hindu women who die sugan are cremated in their full bridal regalia. In fact Hindus mandate new clothes 3 time in life…at birth (on the ceremony when the baby is 13 days old…the 13 days are set aside to focus on the mother & baby only, the family is not even supposed to do any religious or other rituals), at the wedding, & when a person dies, that time he/she are dressed in new clothes. And all the Indian christians or muslims are basically Hindus to begin with who converted at different time, some as far back as 4 generations ago. The maintained certain rituals like the one you mentioned. I have seen some one who also did something like the thali ritual at their church wedding. It is just whatever makes you feel happy & special…isn’t it?

        Reply
      • I think you are right about the suhagan part. The Hindus do the same. But coming to the bride…that’s one time it’s ok to be OTT…and i’d rather see jewellery on a bride…the bride needs to look resplendent…a christmas tree is just a tree…for crying out loud…& why is it even referred to at a wedding?

  19. She’s not going to a premiere or anything, it’s her wedding!! She has every right to be a blinged out bride. She can be plain any other time in her life.

  20. she looks radiant and happy.. two most important things for a bride on her wedding day 🙂

raj on the other hand.. was trying to channel abhishek here?! could have gone clean shaven..

  21. The sari color is not suiting shilpa and her kundan jewellery. The sari might look good for a reception or a party.
She should gone for a darker red color with less print on it.

  22. She looks stunning!!

Also yes its similar style to ash as they are from the same background in india. But I have to say I actually think shilpa looks more wow, strange as ash is the more pretty woman.

As for the OTT jewellery etc, please its her wedding, everyone knows its the one time you care more for traditional look and not fashion! This isn’t an english church wedding, its a huge palace like venue with the whole grand decorations etc. Your meant to be the indian queen for the day!! 🙂

  23. looks great.wish she wore a plainer saree with less work,so that the jewellery was highlighted even more.Like aishwarya who went with a plain yellow and allowed the jewellery to shine thro.

    • Agree! A plainer saree, maybe kanjeevaram would have showcased the jewelry better, now it gets lost in the print all over
      but she is really glowing

  24. I’m quite surprised that most people think that she’s wearing too much jewelry or she looks OTT..I mean if you are Indian then you should know that Indian weddings are all about this! The jewelry, the outfits, the celebration for the whole month! ahhhh I love Indian weddings…specially punjabi weddings,.

Anyways congrats to the couple and she looks amazing!

  25. regarding both these outfits, i think they’ve done an awesome job in incorporating both their cultures (north and south indian). plus i don’t see a problem with all the bling, after all it is a bollywood indian wedding. moms start buying jewellery for the event years before their daughters get married so i don’t think they went out and bought it all on the same day.

  26. i’m trying to focus on the stunning jewelery but it’s really hard. is there a way to photo shop just the jewelery so we can see what it looks like. anyone?

    • Pri I am getting the same jewellery made for my weding0 but just the chcoker the longer haar will be too much with my outfit – let me know i fyou want to know where it was bought from..or should i say just borrowed to publicise the jeweller!

Shilpa might not hav tried to follow Ash..M not sure if u kno dis, Shilpa also belongs to Bunt community in mangalore.. so she had to dress up and wear jewellary dat way.. I guess all maroon wedding outfits luk d same. n moreova Ash wore a golden saree for d wedding.. n shilpa’s is a very different colour. I guess both rocked in their sarees.

  29. I think Shilpa looks absolutely resplendent. She looks every bit as regal & classy as an INDIAN bride should look. As for her choice of jewelry- Tarun’s bridal wear usually has lot of zardosi & kundan jaal work (I wore a similar TT creation at my own wedding 6 years ago) so kundan is the the natural choice for the complementary jewelry; I don’t think it was a decision based on a North or South Indian look… it was simply what works better with the outfit.

I agree with the comments made by belle_desse & a few others. Why do people today feel the need to acclamatize all our ideals to the western concept of “beauty & class”? Learn to appreciate, understand and be proud of your own roots guys!!
