Shanaya was recently photographed in simple, pastel-toned ghararas. Minimal jewelry, barely-there make-up and pair of neutral jootis rounded out her look both times.

With the pink kurta (on the right) being much shorter, the gap between where the kurta ends and the gharara pleats start really threw off the proportions. Not the biggest fan of the suit! Though she looked sweet in both, much prefer her in the suit on the left.

  1. Looks good, The first suit is lovely on her, although I don’t like the clown like sharara. They need to get sharara making right, it’s not a bell Bottom. Take cues from our neighbor.

      • Not talking about origin, talking about the craft. Get it right, this isn’t a garara or even a sharara. It’s a funny trend though. I’ve worn them since my childhood and the above knee area is as broad as below knee, just that top is straight and lower part frilled, pleated. So don’t call it what it’s not.

        • These are an evolution of the traditional ghararas. Ghararas are very elaborate and are supposed to have huge amounts of fabric. But, due to increased cost of fabric and better function as a result of less material, they’ve evolved to this style for casual wear. Rana Safvi has a great blog piece on ghararas. One can google it.

        • There are many in India who know to tailor good ghararas, as it’s originally from India. maybe you haven’t come across good tailors

  2. How wasteful to buy 2 almost similar outfits.. This isnt about owning 2 similar colour suits.. I would understand that of course.. they’re rich.. but a sharara/gharara is such a specific trend.. buying 2 of those.. same colour.. same concept.. same work.. How does the mind even work like that.. Even if you can afford, wasting things feels wrong.. esp in today’s day and age when we are becoming more aware of the environment..

Also can someone educate me on gharara & sharara.. my family is originally from UP but I have no clue and would love to learn..

    • Sharara is like a divided skirt that flares out. So from the outside still looks like you might be wearing a lehenga but it is divided.

A gharara is like a wide legged pant but it has distinctive sections. A top half (kunda), a middle around the knee separating the top and bottom, and the bottom called got (sounds like goat) from where fabric is stitched to flare out. In modern versions we see nowadays, the pants have become more tight around the thighs. But traditionally, all of it is supposed to be loose, grandiose and the got is super flared. Again, I recommend reading the Rana Safvi blog about it.

  3. I like her in both, simple, pretty and charming! Glad there’s no ultra glam doll skin show many of these star kids seem to go for.. it makes them look much older than they are.
