In Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla

Comment image 37

Sara attended her first Cannes Film Festival wearing a lehenga by Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla. I appreciate the effort to make a statement by making that long dupatta train but between the color and the fatigue I have over seeing lehengas all the time, I was unimpressed. She looked more like she was on her way to her wedding.

All the talk of India and its bold colors and yet she shied away from it. Quite a missed opportunity, this.

  1. Lehengas now on international red carpets as well? Bollywoodity and Indianness seem to be two different things to me for sure.

  2. For me, there are two things. One, a complete absence of any personal style or even an attempt at developing one by so many of the popular faces and their stylists. Two, the total disconnect between a person and what they wear. “It’s Cannes, I’m going to walk the red carpet for the first time, what should I wear?” “Let’s get you in an ivory lehenga and make a train of the dupatta.” WOW!!
The rare ask, “It’s a major event, how can I make it individualistic yet interesting?” And they do. But most don’t ask and don’t do. And that is so disappointing given the means and resources at play.

P.S.: As we all know, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan will go all out for her Cannes avatar and do her best. She’ll take all the risks and pose as fabulously as she can. “Eye roll”

    • Sonam, when she dons Anamika Khanna outfits has been doing a good job of showing Indian creativity that fits well in Cannes

    • So true about building a personal style. She did have the sweet girl-next-door style while out and about in Bombay but not for any of her appearances.

  3. I wish she had saved the lehenga for another occasion (without the train) – She does look beautiful and striking!

Just saw Ash’s pics from the airport – lovely coat – unusually big shoes (maybe her feet get cold or they are swelled up)

  4. She very nearly fits the bill for the national costume competition at a beauty pageant. That said, one can be grateful that she did not turn up in a Manish Malhotra “Bollywood for NRIs” lehenga.

    • It’s a stunning lehenga which she could’ve saved for her wedding I guess. Anyway bollywood only wears this color to their nuptials now

  5. Ladies, telling ya, just revisit Kangana’s Cannes outing for sartorial satisfactions: her corset saree was trashed here but I still think it was fabulous.

  6. She was simply there to promote the designers’ new collection “The Indian Bridezilla unleashed on the French Riviera”.

  7. That’s a bad look! Let alone for Cannes, not even good for random appearances at million desi events they attend. She looks clueless!

  8. That’s exquisite embroidery, if only it was a gown and heck even a saree with a long pallu / trail , it would have been better suited for the red carpet . Atm it looks like costume.
Also Sara, high time you get some personality on red carpet . the dead deer expression of so off putting

  9. Sarah is actually taller than average Bollywood ladies but her styling and posing makes her look otherwise. She is taller than say Janhavi but

  10. Also I see Dolly Jain , tagged in her Insta post . While I appreciate Dolly to make a career out of saree draping , I don’t understand the requirement here, you need a whole person to put safety pins on your duppatta, and specially when I am sure she would be travelling with an entrouge of stylists and assistants and make up team etc

  11. This is a waste…Sara is a beautiful, young, intelligent representative of the indian film industry if only her clothes reflected her personality. I feel like I’ve seen this look down to death a gazillion times before. Also her makeup and hair ages her.

  12. Oh wowwww! Had no clue sara can blow you away on a Cannes outing. That’s a very regal look, love the lehenga and it’s an unusual choice but works wonderfully. Also the draping over head is just so traditional and lovely.

    • Agree she does look good, the dupatta is tacky as a train. I wish she puts some personality into her sartorial choices. This outfit looks so dated and random.

  13. Not sure why so much dislike. Not great and I prefer stronger colours but it looks nice enough and Sara looks pretty.

Plus it is not for home auds who are sick of such lehengas. If you see Jennifer Aniston’s MM lehenga in Murder Mystery it is similar. A lot of these promotions are aimed at NRIs/foreign clients and hence the trend towards pale colours or add ons like a train.

  14. this looks like a pre-wedding shoot.
no clue why she’s there on the red carpet but it’s one thing if you’re there for a brand (NOT repping india, please, that idea is long buried) like lóreal and they take over your hair and make-up and clothes, as with ash. and another if you’re there for a movie you’re part of that’s part of the competition, in which case you ARE repping india and need a wardrobe that matches that brief. and quite another if your producers have paid to showcase your movie, in which case you can certainly do better than bride.
meh. the lack of intelligence behind most of our desi girls’ appearance on international red carpets is astounding.

  16. How come all of a sudden throngs of Indian celebs at the Cannes film fesitval? Not that there’s anything wrong with it but i wonder if the world is finally paying attention indian film industry or is it just attending for the sake of attending??

  17. Maybe she was channeling the ‘I am a real life princess’ look. Very lack luster and the hair highlights are aging her.

  18. — She lacks Red Carpet Confidence- #1
    — The dress is colorless and that’s a shame when representing an Indian dress #2 (I love white but this wasnt the place to wear it).
    — The hand pose is too weird for me. #3- I have said this before but Aish has a strange thing she does with her hands too- always she is being clicked. not sure if they are asked to or this reflects their nervousness.
    — The dress otherwise also is so inappropriate for this event. The Raani look was unwarranted for this event. #4

I am sorry that Sara despite her resources and apparent intelligence missed taking this opportunity to make herself shine here a bit.

Lastly, I must ask this- Are the photographers at Cannes ever interested in clicking Indian celebrities?? Almost always when there is a picture from Cannes, there are 50 photographers in the background and nobody is clicking our Indian celebrity- I thought they are pretty familiar now with the likes of Aishwarya. (this was also the case when Aalia came to NY recently)

  19. The designer duo should win the award for the most laziest, unimaginative design along with the most blah color to be ever worn by a celebrity on the Cannes red carpet.

I wonder if our Indian celebrities received their invitation from the organizers with the stipulation that their sarees and dupattas SHOULD have long flowy trains or admissions will be denied. Does having flowy trains make it Cannes worthy? What are these designers, stylists and celebs smoking these days?

  20. Most unimaginative & done to death look from big time Bollywood designers . Why not make her a gown or dress & something that’s edgy & interesting for such a young girl ? Looks like she’s attending an Indian awards show not Cannes
