Wedding Style

After much hullaballoo, tennis player Sania Mirza and cricketer Shoaib Malik were married in Hyderabad with the bride wearing her mom’s wedding sari and the groom wearing a Shantanu and Nikhil sherwani. Congrats to the couple.

P.S. Does anyone else think the clutch is so out of place in this pic?

      • Call me old fashioned. I just think with the traditional wedding attire and this occasion there isn’t a need for or room for a clutch. Can’t imagine my wedding pictures in my shaadi joda and holding a clutch.

        • Brides do need clutches or batuas for the salamis. I carried a clutch on my wedding and it looked very nice actually. pity can’t post pix here

          • Again I think it’s just personal choice. I am simply saying I wouldn’t and if a friend or someone asked I’d advise against it. Of course to each their own.

        • Wedding pouches always look lovely, coz they are made by the designer along with the dress. I agree the clutch she is carrying looks out of place

  1. Many things are out of the place 😛 which also includes the jewellery she is wearing, the tikka is not going with her necklace n bangles. Didn’t like her make up as well.Being such a hyped personality she could have gone for something better as a bridal wear. Hope she wears a better outfit on her reception.

      • Yes, I agree. Saree is off limits. Its just too cute to wear your mom’s wedding saree. I wish I could have done that too!

But I guess, dupatta could have been different…maybe matched with the checks in the middle of the saree?

Shoaib, prince of flowers, looks funny but cute. The flowers are probably part of their tradition. So again, off limits.

Both look cute though! Wish them a happy married life. I think they have had more than their share of controversy. (Heard they can have only one dish in their wedding reception in Pakistan. ..Apparently, Its the law!)

      • totally agree! plus, it’s a very Pakistani thing to hold a blingy clutch on your nikkah/valima nights…she’s just trying something new..i think she looks lovely!

        • You cant stereotype saying its a “very Pakistani thing” to hold a blingy purse.Pakistanis dont usually do that actually. But then everyone has their own tastes. To each their own

      • ya you are so right I agree 100 %. Please leave them alone and let them have fun on their wedding. High Heel people always try to look for negative stuff in people dressing.

  3. OMG…that’s the first things that struck to me…that clutch stickin’ out like a sore thumb.
But i’m getting all senti that she’s worn her momma’s saree..

  4. Not commenting on the saree since it is her moms….EVERYTHING else from make up, to jewellery, clutch is out of place or mismatched.. probably because of the hullaballoo

    • I dont get it though. The controversy started only on April 2nd or 3rd. Wedding was planned for the 15th. Shouldnt she have done her shopping and getting her jewelry/accessories/etc lined up much before April 2nd??
Unless the jewellery is also family heirloom stuff…then it may not match perfectly right?

    • That’s how traditional Muslim grooms look like. All in general.

and mind you, he has it very toned down..I have been to a few Muslim friend’s wedding and they are a lot more decked up.

    • I’m from hyderad and grooms do not wear flowers like that…infact most of them take the garlands around the neck off after some time.
The X patterns of flowers strike me as unusual too.

    • Yes..growing up in Hyderabad and having gone to a bunch or Telangana and Hyderabadi Muslim weddings, I can vouch for the “authenticity” of the way the garlands are worn!!

      Reply
      • Nope thats not a traditional Muslim way of wearing garlands…the groom wears a ‘sehra’ generally, but of course there are so many sub cultures so it must be authentic for his family

  5. During her engagement with Shohrab Mirza, there was class oozing out of everything, right from her makeup, hair, jewellery, etc. I won’t comment on her sari, since it has a sentimental value for her, being her moms’….but definitely a let down from Sania Mirza. The makeup is cakey and very very outdated. Oh! and its now common knowledge that if ur wedding trousseau is super heavy, u go in for relatively light and sophisticated makeup hues.

  6. many congratulations and best wishes to the couple. i think they are both very good looking in normal life. not sure about the outfits but it’s so sweet of sania to wear her mom’s sari. i’m sure they will look really well put together in their reception tomorrow. i think shantanu and nikhil are doing the outfits.

  7. best wishes to both of them they seem to complement each other quite well. And how sweet is it wearing your mom’s sari, I don’t know many girls who would dare do that no matter how much they wanted to. Sania scores points for that alone.

  8. Actually, I feel a bit sorry for her..The marriage was so hurried that it seems that they didn’t even have the time to put things together. Poor girl couldn’t even get a proper Mehendi on. But, congratulations to the lovely couple.

  9. Who carries a clutch to their own wedding…LOL!!! Besides I think this whole thing about wearing her mom’s saree is a little overrated. WHats the big deal about doing that???

    Reply
    • the big deal being that most brides spend lakhs worth on wedding joras they NEVER wear again. Any desi would know what a lot of pressure middle class or even upper middle class families are under to continue this trend even though the amount of money involved is not something most Indians and Pakistanis can easily afford. Such a precedent set by a celeb of Sania’s stature can in no small way send out a positive signal to millions of desi girls. I am amazed by your level of insensitivity and blindness to basic ground realities.

  14. Hmm…loads of confusion here on the outfits!
Ok, one slight clarification. In muslim weddings, unlike the other religions, the “Valima” or reception is more important (since it is hosted by the boy’s side). The wedding, as per the Quran, is supposed to be a small, private affair with close relatives. If the girl’s family is well off, they have to feed the poor . The onus of “celebrating” falls on the boy’s side.
I guess for this reason, not much emphasis has been paid to her outfit and make-up .And we now know that it was a very small private affair (btw, I must say that the Sari is pretty well preserved!!). The dupatta is a must for us (preferably red) and since the Sari is so busy, I guess she opted for a simpler dupatta.
The garland on Shoaib is a simplified version of the “Sehra”. Earlier, it used to be a coat or jacket made of flowers. The headgear of flowers is also a part of the Sehra, though I dont see him wearing it here.
I’m not in favour of their match, but since they both look positively radiant with happiness, I can only wish them the best 🙂

  15. I feel a clutch is a complete no-no for the bride,…all the more when it isnt even a reception party. Also, hosts carrying clutches or bags too feels out of place…like in the case of senior Shetty at Shilpa Shetty’s wedding!

  16. all right ppl bein a hyderabadi n married just 2yrs ago lemme clear the issue on shoaib maliks garlands the style is traditional but wayyy tooo dowdy in comparison to the real thing!! plus sanias whole get up is no traditional hyderabadi brides….hyderabadi brides wear a khada dupatta……the tikka is traditional though n her engagement jewellery was all traditional though that is why it looked so rich n classy…..it was from the nizams state after all 🙂

  17. Congratulations to the couple. They look good together. Sweet that she wore her mom’s saree. Actually the plain dupatta is good as the rest of the saree is so grand. For a total last minute wedding and major tension, I think she looks nice. The clutch was not there in some other photos. Maybe they just came to the seats when this photo was taken.

  20. Why is she carrying a clutch ? she is not a guest at her own wedding. totally out of place. Seems too “showing off” types.

And the cross garland, is it traditional ?

  21. Oh ya, forgot to mention in the previous comment, that i love that she is wearing her mother’s saree !!! Thats indeed very sweet !

She could afford the world, but she decided to go with sentiment value. Kudos for that !

  22. The garlands in different styles are what traditional hydrabadi grooms wear for the wedding…so ppl think twice before you start criticizing them.
Sania looks pretty, I am surprised that she didnt wear the traditional hyderabadi bridal outfit called “Khada Duppatta” and didnt deck up her hands with henna.

  23. Well I completely loved the typical Muslim style make up of sania …reminds the tradional south Indian style of aishwarya rai…it’s really gr8 on their part to stick to the roots on such private n personal occasion..
Later in life there are many occasions where u can show ur dressing style..
Though aishwarya made a fashion statement as her look was apes by rakhi in her swayamvar as well by Shilpa shetty during her wedding …

  24. I PLAN ON WEARING MY MOM’S WEDDING SARI TOO!! If my wedding requires a saree that is. Hell, I think I would wear it either way. It’s much more lovely and simple and sophisticated than this one too- and Sri Lankan’s always wear white/cream sooo, haha.
    They look cute. Congrats.

  25. My guess is the confusion over the flower harness and the supposedly outta place clutch arises over the coming together of traditions from two different countries and cultures. The harness style garland and the ones on the arms are something I’ve never seen on a Pakistani groom nor have I ever seen a groom wear a Jinnah cap (Pakistani grooms almost always wear turbans) so I assume these are Hyderabadi in origin. Secondly Pakistani brides receive salami or cash gifts from the guests which necessitates a clutch (many carry a batua or pouch made out of the same material as the bridal dress). I am assuming that giving salamis is a tradition in in India too and even if it isn’t I’m sure Shoaib’s pakistani relatives must’ve given the bride salamis etc. Hence the pouch. It is quite amazing how unwarranted some of the criticism here is.

  26. Shoaib’s attire should have reflected his Pakistani roots. A little disappointed at that. He looks a bit odd..he should have chosen Amir Adnan for his sherwani! Personally I think Paki desingers have more intricate clean detailed kaam than indian designers but to each their own. Best of luck to them… it was awful they had to go thru media hell to get married.

    Reply
    • agreed! All the best dressed grooms I’ve ever seen have been dressed by Amir Adnan. Then again he might’ve been given the dress by his in laws. Makes sense. Otherwise I don’t see a Pakistani groom wearing a Jinnah cap on his wedding day.

  27. The hyderabadi in me loves everything , seeing her wedding pictures reminded me of my wedding, my mom gave me her wedding saree as well (which I wore for one of my receptions). I’m pretty sure her (Sanchack) mehendi pic will be “full of class”.
As for shoaib’s armour trust me this is a very toned down version of the real thing, I had tell my folks that y would be husband is allergic to flowers to get out of it.
    CONGRATULATIONS TO THE COUPLE

  28. This wedding has the reverse order. First the wedding then mehendi and sangeet. They hurried to get married first so obviously they didnt put much thought into it. They look nice. Also whats the fuss about flowers?? Unlike western countries, flowers are an integral part of indian culture. They are used for worship, daily wear on hair(in the south) and on a large scale in the weddings. South indian weddings have the bride adorning flowers from top of the head to the bottom tip of her hair. Bride and bridegroom exchange flower garlands. The more the merrier. Muslim weddings use even more with the bridegroom covered in flowers and yes the wristband is also a must. Also the use of rose flowers is used extensively in their weddings. Hope the sangeet, mehendi and reception pics look better in comparison!

  29. Guyz calm down.

the overall wedding attire of groom and bride is a mix of south indian weddng+ Hyderabadi muslim wedding. The clutch that she is carrying is very common among the brides to carry. I myself being a hyderabadi find it quite weird buts that how it is .. you know cultural …

neither of them are making any fashion statements.

the moment of saw the clutch it reminded me of those typical wedding from old city of hyderabad

  30. it would be just tacky to pass judgement on their attire

I can do that on your behalf. i am mean & nasty nhhaaaaaaaaaa

To begin with despite being such a sweet idea to wear mom’s saree. if my mom has such taste i would think twice before wearing that tracky one. i think it should be given a miss. she is rich and i think she can afford a more decent saree. after all we marry once in life. the sangeet outfit is not an uprgrade either. though i love the coulour on her is soft and womanish. The groom’s outfits are such a delight in comp with Mirza.

Ps: does anyone think that the clutch is unecessary here. Madam we already know that u can afford a clutch but i never seen a bride wearing one. twice beaten never shy.

last and not least and beco i am an angel of God . a big congratulations to the couple/
