Sameera, who we haven’t seen on these pages in a long while, attended the Chopra-Jonas reception wearing a green Benarasi sari with a cobalt blue blouse and a pearl and emerald jewellery.
Loved the sari choice. Just wish her bronzer hadn’t been that heavy handed.

One thing…why arent chiffons popular in India?
With the weather and all, it should be on the top of the list? So much benarasi kanjeeveram silks. They are so unflattering on me personally maybe because I am only 5’2? Also though I am pretty fit, the silks always make me look way heavier which again makes you look shorter even shorter etc. Nothing against height/weight problems but I am trying to look like me and not be transformed into almost a diff body. Am I borrowing – yes borrowing- from family because I only bought 2 benarasis so far- its just I just cant seem to pull off silk saris and they looks very unflattering even the more expensive ones.
Chiffon specially french is just an all around winner for me (net saris as well, but I don’t like the level of see through with net). Apparantly chiffons are too underwhelming for parties so I always end up arguing on what to wear so I end up invariantly wearing benarasi salwars which for some reason work really well specially short punjabi (I know its so dated).
I hear you. I’m 5’3 and have a similar struggle. I’m pretty fit (even if I might say so myself!). I’ve found dhakais, Kota benarsis, kanchipuram cotton silks and crepe silks drape best for my height.
I would have agreed with you ladies until I got a silk kanjeevaram saree put on me professionally. They ironed the pleats and put pins everywhere and was put on so elegantly and so close to my body that it was like another skin. Unfortunately I have never been able to replicate it. But yes it can be done, short ladies can look fantastic in a silk saree. There is hope. ??

It is tricky. I think the saris have to be soft to drape close but usually they are new and dry cleaned and stiff and so adding volume. If you are not particular about zari raw silk sarees, Mysore crepe, non zari kanjeevaram, Odisha ikat, narayanpet, kantha silk works well. Otherwise there is zari chanderi and maheshwari – but make sure the border is not a Trump wall of zari. You get zari dhakais also.
Chiffon is popular. In Rajasthan you get saris jo CMji pehenti hain (now ex CM) and they are all chiffons. The good ones will be 5000 plus. I have seen it worn at morning weddings.
You can try pure silk sarees. I love them because they are light and comfortable and do not make my 5’2″ height look any shorter.
Also there are gorgeous Maheshwari silk and Chanderi silk sarees apart from Dhakai Jamdanis and Sambalpuri and Ikkat sarees in silk.
I hear you! I am 5’5 n slim but Banarasis look way too heavy n I look bulky in them. I prefer Kanjeevarams. For summer occasions, you can opt for embroidered georgettes. One thing more, the current lot of actresses are very tall. Most of them were models before entering into Bollywood. That’s why we always end up feeling not tall enough but yes, I always feel Banarasi sarees look good on quite tall n leaner frames as they are quite heavy n ‘fooli hui’. Kanjeevarams while look good on almost any one if one choose them wisely! You can also go for Sambalpuri silk. They look beautiful. You can check Payal on Insta:)

Gorgeous Saree!
Try Mysore Silk saree. It is easy to drape and does not add bulk to ones body. I am extremely petite too and I have the same opinion on Kanjeevaram silk, as gorgeous as they are, they do not look good on me. Mysore silk sarees come in great color combinations and some look pretty rich if the border is broad with zari work in the pallu.
One quick tip.. keep the quality high, zari booti small, border thin/no border.. it would look amazing on shorter people too .. good quality kanjeevarams are quite flowy where as the artificial thread weave once stand stiff.. unfortunately most of the ones you get in regular shops are far away from the original weave.
A. It is not the “heavy handed” bronzer but her natural skin tone which is glowing.
B. Among all the seas of white washed women who used to be endorsers of “sticking to who they are”, she comes of as natural and a better inspiration to women of all colors.
C. Sameera looks beautiful and looove that saree drape with no “one boob show”. So regal.
