Rohit Bal: 1961 – 2024

On a Friday here in the US while prepping for late Diwali festivities, received the news that Rohit Bal, one of India’s OGs, had passed away. Growing up in the 90s, Mr. Bal was one whose designs I drooled over. I never got to meet him but still remember the day I walked into his store decades ago and bought my very first “Rohit Bal” which his sister lovingly helped me select.

My condolences to his family and closed ones.

  1. I remember Rohit Bal happily playing the dhol, wearing a festive turban and a red tikka. This was more than two decades ago. His niece, who was then a colleague, was getting married. Have always admired his use of graceful motifs, especially the lotus. RIP, Rohit.

  2. RIP. Growing up in India in 90s, he was my introduction to fashion/designing. He was charming and clothes were a treat to the eyes and it was a whole new world of models/supermodels/aspirational clothes. Such happy memories.
