Sporring her signature weave, a kanjivaram, this time in a white and gold combination, Rekha attended the Kapoor-Thakkar wedding reception. She looked regal but coming to the sari itself, am not a fan of such wide borders. I feel like they throw off proportions. Are you fan of such wide border saris?

Normally Rekhaji carries off such looks with elan but this time around it has a heavy, stuffy feel…even she doesnt look too thrilled without her usual exuberance on the carpet.
At the risk of opening myself to the Scolders Who Want to Scold the Internet Scolder, I think this comes down to body types 🙂 Wide-border Kanjis require a certain kind of stature — not just tall but also of hourglass proportions — the typical body type, in fact, of the temple goddess 🙂 And it doesn’t get better than Rekha.
A tall person who’s also very slim may be overwhelmed by such a saree, as would, of course, a short person. I actually love that these sarees were organically designed for those who they were supposed to dress, long before big-name designers discovered Kanjis.
Growing up, those of us who lacked height had to gnash our teeth and buy kanjis with 3″ borders and watch enviously when our tall sisters could carry off with elan borders that reached their knees.
i love her saree, its beautiful…its more likely a master weaver saree made with pure zari , i own lot of long border kanchi sarees…. long border sarees look gorgeous on tall women .what that sareee needs is long rani haar or kasumala or mango mala .
She is looking divine but some of the colours clash with each other such as the white and black portions. She should have just gone with gold and pink for the sari.
She looks like a walking talking Apsara!!!
3/4th hands would have worked better given the huge border for the hands.
Also if neck wasn’t so high, it will look better and also leave the pallu to show some saree main color.
I wish there was a picture in better lighting- she usually wears great saris . but what is up with that blouse- looks like she wore a regular blouse and compression sleeves
not at her best, but way better than many of the others at the do
I wish she would venture outside the all gold/ beige/ black and white zone and do colors as well in her kanchis. She rocks this style that’s very OG, and would love to see her do a blue veldhaari kanchi or a rama green kottadi etc
But I I wish she’d rid the maang Tikka that takes it every time to the border line tacky zone..
I didn’t like the pink strip which makes me think it’s an MM..
But she looked amazing.. I especially liked how the gold-bronze looked against the white from the back..
Its called the selvedge (or selvage) tightly woven edge that protects the saree from fraying,sometimes it’s woven contrasting color in intricate korvai interlocking technique….gaurang shah does it , lot of vijayalakshmi master weaver sarees have contrasting selvage ,lakshmi silks chennai most of thier sarees has contrast selvage …there is nothing manish malhotra about it…
I hope her jewelry is real and hers. That’s one of the many but important redeeming quality of the diva. The top choker is somethign we have seen her wear but not the others. more imp, the other 2 necklaces dont look real.
When we were young, we used to laugh at ladies who wore sarees with huge zari borders to weddings. They were generally considered show offs. The bigger the zari border, the more expensive the saree and more the “status”.
Rekha sarees must be from the time when real zari was used and you bought the saree with the biggest borders if you could afford it. These days it it synthetic zari but still people feel it is a “grand” sari if there is a lot of zari. And so the trend continues.
Personally I agree with Payal it throws off proportions.
Which part of the country is this ?..in karnataka , Chennai and Andhra pradesh we people people still wear long border zari …our grandmother’s wore it …me and my cousins still wear it , long border sarees ..lot of people wear it ..and also tissue sarees with pure zari are the most revered sarees among south indians which is all over intricately woven zari with 0 percent or bare minimum silk …they are crowned jewels of handloom weavers
nobody thinks these extensive zari sarees as show off clothing …. people who cant afford pure silver and gold zari …will wear copper and silver zari sarees ,again that zari is not synthetic but still a metal zari which is handloom …synthetic / plastic based zari is used machine loom
And also you do get pure zari 4 gram + kachivaram sarees even today( I personally collect pure zari sarees ) if you go to any kanjervaram stores like angadi , vijaylakshmi silk , gaurang shah , lakshmi silks chennai , chitra looms , tulsi weaves you will find them… tulsi and vijaylakshmi did an extensive multi city exhibition with real zari vintage inspired sarees ….seriously where do u get information from? Do u even know anything about handloom sarees and pure zari sarees ?
Guys no need to be so triggered and over explaining your love of zari.
I am from the South and I am middle aged andfor my elders too much zari and loud colours was not considered good taste. Even the main wedding saree was plain maroon with zari stripe border. So it is not an unheard of thing.
Rekha is uniquely dressed and tall but even she is drowning in this saree. The desire to cram in zari gives it a lopsided balance – which was Payal’s point.
I think larger zari borders are more about having a unique design and they are not about showing off but if one is young one might mistakenly come to the wrong conclusion. Larger borders offer a dramatic and striking design and they show the creativity of different saris.
Practical question — Mum must be at 99% humidity right now. It must be hot in that attire. How does she do it at this age? No sweat patches? Nothing uncomfortable about all that heavy fabric?
I wish people stopped referring to Kanjivaram to kanji/kaanji 🙁 .
Also, lookwise , minus the maang tika , this is pretty nice look for Rekha
