In Manish Malhotra

Despite the sari, Rani looked lovely at a recent appearance. We like. You?

(Look inside to see the versions of the sari on MM runway.)

  1. The sari looks like a tacky xmas table runner. might have been salvaged a bit with an interesting blouse at least.

and did she get fringes in the front? I think they need to grow out a little and fall better.

  2. why is he ruining sarees with velvet?! from the runway pics, the saree looks great on the bottom – lovely colours and nice brocade border – but the portion where it begins to drape is awful. i like the saree on the right (pretty and looks like it has no velvet)

    • I couldn’t agree more on the misuse of velvet. Rani would’ve fared better with either of the runway saris and the brocade blouse combo. The excess of velvet on her sari and blouse is just horrid! I so wish for the return of saris in gorgeous Indian fabrics and weaves. Also wish I could stop MM and his ilk from “designing” saris! If wishes were horses………….

  3. Rani has on a pound of makeup and a tacky garish sari and that is a good look? Alright if you say so.

Plus there is something weird about the hair.

  4. After her recent appearances in minidresses/shirt without pants look, this is a major upgrade. She looks gorgeous although I don’t like this sari.

  5. The saree is a christmas-y looking but surprisingly, I kind of like it. Rani is looking nice too…so much better than her non-desi outfit disasters.

  6. Rani’s saree is really tacky – that’s just way too much velvet! Somehow, the runway versions are relatively better. About Rani, well, she has lost her charm – too much make up, limp hair and mis-matched watch.

  7. Is it just me or does it seem like Manish Malhotra’s trying to emulate Sabyasachi’s designs? The earthy colors and traditional borders are pretty much a signature of Sabyasachi.

Anyways, this was a total fail. I hate velvet; it is probably one of the least flattering fabrics, next to polyester. But I love the richness of the red against the taupe, and the textural contrast of the different borders in the sari. With better fabric choices, this would have been a gorgeous outfit.

I don’t get why people always have problems with Rani’s makeup – it’s applied just as thickly as that of other celebrities.

I am glad to see the hideous dresses and “trendy” clothes have disappeared from Rani’s wardrobe.

  8. what is it about the make-up pple don’t like? is it the foundation is too cakey or is it her eye make-up is too heavy…I agree with zara…every other celebrity has it equally heavy or not-heavy…its the in look isn’t it? to do glossy lips with smokey eyes and sheer foundation? also, if she’s a celebrity judge for the show, her make-up has to be suited for the lighting…
if I had to pinpoint anything about the way she looks, i’d say the shiny texture of the sari has made the pleats look untidy…also she looks a lil haggard and tired…the 1st pic on the left plays up her heavy eyebags…she overall she looks soooo sweet….

  9. That saree material is glass tissue. IT’s quite popular with lots of designers this season.

Rani is looking nice in a not so nice saree. Just wish the velvet was not there.

The runway blouse on the left is lovely.

  10. Rani looks OK .. but this post seriously makes me wonder why do people think MM is the best designer for Bollywood??
Who lets him design such stuff?? and why are bollywood stars soooooo loyal to him……
Take chiffon… adorn it with velvet/brocade/lace/sequins/crystals.. and bingo!! you’ve got a “DESIGNER” thing ready..which every second person in bollywood is going to wear…
Someone;s got to stop the man!!!

  11. velvet borders when done well can look very rich and beautiful but that blouse is overkill – but what I really think is making this saree look tacky is the material of the saree, looks like some gold lame polyesterish fabric, not nice.

  12. “She has lost her charm” seems to be a recurring comment under all of Rani’s pictures. Lame! I completely disagree 😀 She still has it.

  13. like the color combo of rani’s sari but that’s about it… it looks so gaudy… as Zara pointed out, with different fabrics, it would have looked gorgeous… that said, she looks a zillion times better here (blingy sari and all) when compared to the western outfits that she has been seen in lately (most of which, looked ridiculous on her).

  14. She looks like a Queen..true to that word. Loved everything about this look, was perfect for the occasion and the sheen looks very rich. Its certainly not a sari that is suttle, saccharine and overtly feminine. The intent was to say ‘ watch out! the Diva is here”…and that was acheived……
BUT I have to add the Manish is shamelessly trying to copy sabyasachi’s fabic mixes…sheesh

  15. I also wanted to add that I agree with pdaervo about the sari making her look stout. The sari has way too much fabric, and it is tied a bit too low on her hips. The shiny material does not help either.

Is it common for women to wear watches with saris? It always seems jarring to me.
