LIFW: Sabyasachi

There is a good reason why Sabyasachi is called the Hermes of India by those in the fashion-know and this collection is just another affirmation of what we already believe: he has the makings of a great couturier, and well under way!

The colors were so rich, grounded, yet so luxe and vibrant! The color palette exploded with every hue and tone but never overwhelmed. The textures were stunning, there was velvet, brocade, chiffon, chenille, khadi and even cotton! Lovely!

I loved that he mentioned at the Press Conn, the fact that its time designers worked on consolidating and paying attention to the market in India because it is the Indian consumers that made designers like him and Tarun Tahiliani into super brands!

This collection was inspired by the India-Pakistan partition and by movies like Sardari Begum, 1947 Earth and, the colors by Mircha Masala. He had quwalis for soundtrack, calling it ethnic trance. You got to love that! The collection went back to the roots of Indian ethnic couture.

I can’t think of a single minus on this collection. This is the kind of piece a woman owns and passes on as an heirloom! It was masterfully crafted and skillfully executed and takes a man of certain skill and genius to do what he does every single time with Indian couture!

P.S: Rani was spotted at the show wearing an ensemble designed by Sabyasachi!

The Fashion Police Is Out Again

I absolutely hate it when siblings dress alike. I hate it even more when couples dress alike. You know, the kind who wear matching tees and go riding tandem cycles!! Eeecks. But at this point, I’l even take that looking at the way Salman and Katrina dressed for two seperate events and really, there is just no excuse for it!

Just look at the way Mr. Khan dressed for a preview of Pradeep Verma’s paintings at the Suchitrra Art Gallery. The over-bleached hair, that same ol’ Ed Hardy tee and those tattered jeans! Geez. Unless you are an Abercrombie model, no one and I mean no one should be dressing in jeans that tatterred! As far as camouflage goes, unless you are in the military, live in a trailor park or are a certifiable redneck, please steer clear off of them!

And as far as Ms. Kaif goes, boooring!! There she was at the unveiling of Philips’ diamond-encrusted Ambilight Flat TV looking monochromatic and washed out! She is beautiful, sure, but oh so yawn-worthy too! And that transluscent blouse?? That grey dress over it?? Over her denims?? And that frilly long scarf detail on her collar!! No No No. Layering works wonders, but clearly, in some cases, absolutely not!

Where have all the stylists gone?

Indian Inspired Hermes Collection

Jean Paul Gautier’s inspiration for Hermes Spring 2008 Ready-to-wear Collection came from India and that was apparant right from the get go! There were turbans and in some instances, models’ hair that was styled like turbans with really high top knots!

There were beautiful suede tunics embellished and embroidered…And, I absolutely loved the Nehru jackets worn over jodhpurs. I for one, have never been into Jodhpurs but they are big for spring and I have seen almost every designer do them or atleast interpret them! But how great would those super structured Nehru jackets look with ciggarette trousers? Divine. And, that swimming costume? So reminiscent of the timeless Hermes silk scarf! Fabulous!

And there were these reinterpreted Sari-dresses which left a shoulder bare and had that ethereal feel about them, though must admit, they did sometimes get campy! But not everything in a collection is ever all commercial, so I loved it! And those beautiful purple, aubergine hues made an appearance too! That is ‘the’ color! The rich deep jewel tones were just fabulous!

I loved the longer evening dresses. So feminine, so much of what makes them an instant classic.

The collection was très luxe, uber chic and unquestionably Hermes. Whats not to like?

Sweet Dreams Are Made Of These

Birkins. Sweet dreams are made of these. Indeed.

Payal and I have just taken in a holiday weekend at Vegas with the girls and I happen to have come into some winnings. Albeit, tiny ones. But even then, guess where that money went?? To my, ‘When-will-I-afford-a-Birkin-God?” Fund. Yes, such funds do exist, its no urban legend! Check these droolworthy Birkins from the Hermes 2008 Spring ready-to-wear show!

Chocolate will never look or taste the same again. Look at the first Birkin. Am having a serious case of ‘I-Want’itis’!

LFW: Shyamal and Bhumika

Shyamal and Bhumika’s “India Inspires” collection was the first to catch my eye when I was skimming through all the collection over the past few days. I say that because Well Heeled and I just returned from Vegas and have loads to catch up with. (Of all the weekends, how come this weekend had to be packed with events!)

The collection as the name states has a lot of rich Indian tones. From first glance, the collection seems to belong more to a Bridal Asia preview rather than a spring collection, but I am really not complaining as such. The embroidery, the sequins, the color combinations were striking but it almost seemed like we have seen all this done before..
