In Kaufman Franco

Padma Lakshmi smouldered in her icy Kaufman Franco gown on the Emmy red carpet. The gown with its cutout details looked fantastic on her and, the gold jewelry worked really well with the blue of her gown. We like!

  1. Come on…the makeup is off and the golden against blue is looking awful.
It is not necessary that if there are certain celebs like Frieda ,Padamlaxmi ,Sonam etc are an almost so by virtue of being those big name you have to give them a thumbs up.Keep it real.

    • I don’t know why there’s a constant urge to accuse bias on this site
      It’s all personal opinion
And btw – Padma Lakshmi ended up on most of the best dressed lists for last night’s Emmys
No that does not mean everyone has to like it
But yes it does mean that many did. And thus bias has nothing to do with it
Why is there so much malice for the site owners always?
If you don’t agree with an opinion just say so
Opinion is meant to differ. As do tastes
No need to be sarcastic or nasty about it
The negativity in some of the comments is getting really awful

      • +1 While I don’t agree with PnP many times, I don’t go accusing them of bias because this is their personal blog. Since they have such a huge readership, the best thing would be to be as unbiased as humanly possible, but lately I’ve noticed that anytime a visitor doesn’t agree with PnP’s opinion, they accuse them of bias.
This is a fashion blog. I wish everyone would take this stuff lightly, and move on 🙂

  2. I could nitpick – makeup seems off (i feel like her makeup never fails to fail in playing up her features) and agree the blue and gold clash. Am also not a fan of the darting at the bust. But despite this all, the overall result is that Ms. Lakshmi looks great.

  3. it saddens me to note the (coincidental?) fact that many Indian actors/models who have been successful on the international front lack that quintessentially indian look. padmalakshmi and frieda pinto look multiracial, and aishwarya rai is always made up to look european, with the constant extolling of her fair skin and grey eyes. unfortunately, Indian women who have embraced their culture openly on the international red carpet are more criticised (especially here at home) than the ones who deny their heritage. (e.g. vidya balan, among others). i wish more of these celebrities were like nandita das.

    • And what pray is a ‘quintessentially Indian look’ ? As far as I know men and women from various parts of India often look and dress very different from one another. Also, you seem to equate embracing ‘Indian’ identity with wearing often costume’ish attire (like Vidya Balan) which caters to a very Eurocentric idea of what ‘Indian’ is and has been heavily criticized (and rightly so) as well. Perhaps its time to step away from the traditional VS modern dichotomy most conversations regarding Indian aesthetics tend to fall back on, no?

      • Finally, some women here makes sense! India is not a wart attached to earth. We are not insular. We are not supposed to act differently just because we are Indians, we are very much a part of the global phenomenon. Ladies who attend such intenational events should look very much the part of the global culture! It peeves me how we are often influenced by this eurocentric idea of Indian fantasy. We are not objects to appease their fantasy. And who are others to judge how we should dress or whether we are carrying our Indian identity with us or not? The conversation here should be about whether the look worked or not and not how much India one should carry outside India.

        • both Freida and Padma are identifiably Indian, down to being identifiable by region, West coast and South Indian respectively. Aish too is typically South Indian/Mangalorean but very pale. She too is a type – google Sneha Ullal. Big eyes, plump cheeks, baby face, is what appeals to Indian masses, its why South Indian actresses were always on top, also Sridevi, Hema, Vyjainthimala etc. Freida and Padma’s angular looks are very common and identified with poverty and hard labour, sadlly, hence not aspirational to the masses. Both could be successful ramp models here though, like many other skinny, dark beauties.

Question is why do Europeans always insist that the best looking Indians look European?

          • Agreed to a certain extent. It’s not about south or north w.r.t plump cheeks- baby face looks. Since all the actresses in South Indian Cinema from up North ranging from Kushboo, Jothika to the now popular Hansika are all the same plump cheeks you are referring to.There are a few exceptions like a PC or a Rekha making it big. I so agree about dark skinned identified with poverty and that i think is the main reason that people are crazy about using whitening products and wearing lighter foundations. Sad State indeed.

While I appreciate people who choose to wear Indian on a global red carpet (ala Nandita Das that does it naturally not like Vidya Balan at Cannes which truly was bizarre) because that is their natural style – i don’t understand why someone who doesn’t automatically is assumed to be looking away from their Indian identity
Pray – identity is about more than clothes. People need to get over it
Often there is so much negativity against someone like Freida Pinto who has made a name for herself abroad – about how ‘ordinary’ she is. How dumb. Shouldn’t we just be proud?
