On An Aside

In light of recent events, the passing of one young soul and of another attempting it, we thought we need to take a moment and appreciate life.

One can never really understand why someone takes that irreversible step to end their life, and it is not our place to say to them that there was another option. When depression hits, it doesn’t just take the person but people around him/her to recognize the signs and bring them out of the black hole. We don’t have the answers on what to do or not to do and we don’t want to preach either.

All we can say is, if you’re suffering from depression, there is help and to the rest to keep an eye out for warning signs. For more, visit Suicide.org to find organizations in your countries.

  1. Thanks for that P&P…a timely and useful message. Depression can kill. In that respect it is no different from cancer. Unfortunately the severity of it is not always recognised because it attacks the mind rather than the body.

    • Aptly said! My aunt is suffering from OCD and I have tried to explain to her family that disorderers of the mind shouldn’t be seen differently than of the body but my heed goes in vain. Her family blames her ‘attitude’.
Thanks for being one more person in this world who understands.

I’ve seen many fashion blogs but I like this one the best as P&P are always thoughtful of not hurting anyone by mentioning their weight/skin color/age issues.

Today’s post wasnt even necessary but you guys wrote to send the message about suicide.org. Admire you guys a lot!

      • Too true. My aunt is bipolar. Very difficult to make her in-laws understand that it is not “attitude”.

Difficult to decide how and if at all to post on such an event. In this case it is warranted and thoughtfully put. Yesterday I saw Jiah’s pics on this site, she looks lovely in a sari. RIP.

  5. Sometimes even knowing that there is something called Depression helps. I didn’t know it earlier and have paid a very heavy price for it.

I only hope and pray more people are aware about it

    • Good for you Nazia – wishes for your life to turn into a positive direction now that you know what was the problem. Many ppl don’t realize that depression can be hereditary, one gets it just like diabetes or heart problems.

  10. I visit your page every day. It is an indulgence I can’t go without 🙂
Thank you for posting on depression. Unfortunately, depression continues to be a taboo topic in many societies. I survived years of sexual abuse as a child, and eventually ended up with manic depression which often drove me to the edge. I’m still under medication, and am grateful to my parents and my then boyfriend (whom I married in 2011) for being there for me.
My heart goes out to all those people who are misunderstood or denied treatment in the name of salvaging family honour.

Rest In Peace, Jiah. You were a beautiful woman, and I wish you had someone who could see into your soul.

  13. Very thoughtful of you P&P, a very well timed message. I went through two intense bouts of depression in grad school and I know how frightening it can be, how quickly things can spiral downwards and how lonely you can feel. Its almost like a black-hole that sucks you in, unknown to anyone else around you since you are very shy, scared or ashamed to admit that something is wrong. Counselling helped me immensely. Talking to someone always , always helps. My two cents.

  14. Thanks P&P. A touching note. And a useful reminder. Depression is a disease that can be treated and hope any one experiencing it has the strength and support to receive proper help.

  15. Please bear in mind w/ depression comes the heavy burden of anti-depressants. So please educate yourself on the parameters that must be followed when taking such medications. The education of a disease and proper treatment should go hand in hand. I have been following this blog for years and respect the message that you both have sent. Countless souls have suffered the greater consequences of not being closely monitored while on anti-depressants, I hope that one day this message is spread just as heavily as the awareness for depression these days. May her soul rest in peace, and all those who have lost their lives either to the disease or its treatment.

  16. Lovely post ladies.

I’m blessed with sound mind and body, to overcome such urges. Urges that can not only destroy me, but everyone around me.

I always grew up thinking that suicide was the most selfish thing a person could do. It’s more like being a coward and not facing life and its struggles, but merely, giving up and placing huge burdens of depressions on family and friends.
Of course I changed my thoughts, as I felt it was too harsh.
But I do wish, that before someone ends their life for something petty, but which could seem like a big deal at that particular moment, please think before you do it. There are people who love you and care deeply about you. You don’t want them to hurt.

I do feel very strongly on this subject, although I haven’t lost anyone to a suicide, I did lose someone very dear to me in an accident. It’s not the same thing, I know, but it does strike a chord in my heart, as I know how it feels to lose a loved one.
