In Masaba

At a promotional event for her movie, Ms. Gupta opted for another design by her daughter to sport, this time a white maxi featuring an embellished bikini blouse. She wore it well but this outfit just seemed more appropriate for a pool/beach party related event.

  1. I like Neena Gupta & her personal style, but this is just crass & unnecessary. Perhaps the ONLY place it would be passable is the beach. Other than that, this is just a terrible, terrible idea.

  3. Looks all sort of awful tacky and vulgar. And I’m not being ageist. Super inappropriate. Period and tough to look at.
Someone above commented this is for someone in their 20s, i respectfully disagree, it’s a terrible choice for someone even in their teens. :))) terrible choice for any age

  4. When your adult child dresses you but it is not you. It is very difficult to convince young people that showing skin in itself is not modern or sexy or fashionable.

The influence of adult children on what older parents wear is an essay in itself.

  5. I rarely comment on these posts — though I should, Payal….. and always appreciate how sharp and thoughtful your takes are.

But I had to step in here because the ageism in some of these comments is hard to ignore.

Personally, I thought the outfit looked great. It had pants underneath, and when she was seated, it looked elegant and well put together. The bustier sat perfectly — no awkward bunching or cleavage (which, frankly, younger actresses could learn from).

Meanwhile, one male lead wore a denim jacket, another a suit. Among the women — one wore a black sari, another a super short white skirt. So which of them was “inappropriately dressed” for this event? There was no clear dress code for this event.

Let’s be honest: we’re not critiquing fashion — we’re judging, policing what we think people can wear at a certain age.

Why are we so uncomfortable with a woman who is visible at 66 — sexy at 66, flaunting her body at 66?

That to me is something to celebrate….. Not tear down.

    • Commenters on this page also post about Aishwarya being excessively clothed. So I don’t see why a revealing look must not be critiqued. Poor Disha Patani got hell for leather for doing so

The idea that whatever women wear must not be critiqued seems very Gen X/millennial feminism. It simply prevents one from looking at the deeper reasons for why we wear what we wear.

As an old person myself, I don’t want to be patronised by being treated with kid gloves no matter what I wear. And yes Ms Gupta is rarely wrong in how she presents herself but both her Pero outing and Masaba outing are decidedly odd and unflattering.

    • I think the outfit was interesting but maybe the V neck should have been wider but stopped at where the bustier ended, it would have looked neater.
I may not like the outfit myself but I will defend to death her right to wear it. Why should older women not be allowed to wear daring clothes? Is it only the purview of the young and shapely? Though NG is plenty shapely.
Whether it is this, or the drape of sarees not covering the breast – many commenters on this site are surprisingly conservative and judgemental

  6. More than her dress, what caught my attention was this post had many comments compared to other posts 🙂
Looks little tacky and even inappropriate. Mainly given she is always in sarees to suddenly this.
Though I appreciate her boldly trying new looks, may be something in between saree and this will work better on her and mainly in such events.
