Nandita at Cannes 2013: ‘Zulu’ Premiere & Closing Ceremony

In her orange silk sari, Nandita was literally a ray of sunshine on the red carpet. My teeeny weeeny gripe is the strand of hair that was purposely removed but she looked so sweet that I’ll ignore it.

  1. she’s looking so gorgeous. such a breath of fresh air as compared to the overly thought out outfits that sabya invented for poor vidya.

    • Part of being a “film star” is being glamorous. I love Nandita’s laid back style, but you really can’t compare her to Vidya, Sonam or Aishwarya whose careers are built upon how good they look both on and off screen. Frankly, I’m tired of all the “Nandita looks so great why can’t others do this…” comments.
Frieda said it best, in a Cannes 2013 interview, when she walks down the red carpet the dress designer, shoe designer, makeup artist all “walk” with her. It’s just part of being a celebrity today. Of course, being glamorous and looking ‘fresh’ don’t have to be mutually exclusive; that’s what our actresses and their stylists need to work on!

      • Please don’t include Vidya in this group…the lady can act and carry a conversation off screen. from playing a nerdy sis on tv to cannes. she certainly didn’t make that journey riding on a cult of celebrity with a team of publicists and stylists to help her stay relevant. Same goes for Nandita.

      • Totally agree! People on here, including Payal and Priyanka need to realize that there is a difference between Nandita and the others. Not everyone is made for absolute simplicity. A huge part of being a film star is the glamour quotient, c’mon people.

        • I totally agree. Having said that, I have to add that Vidya’d dressing was a mockery of Indian ease and style at all levels.
I like the colour on Nandita here and she does look pretty and at ease. A thinner border would have done wonders to her frame as it did for the purple saree.

        • Agreed, but I think that’s why you need to give more credit when effortless grace trumps glamour in such big way. It is very heartening to see that our everyday wear can look better than the designer looks that costs thousands of dollars.

          • +1 dn. I am so tired of the “common” and “kaamwali bai” comments for traditional looks, and Nandita really showed us what TRUE Indian style and elegance and yes glamour is all about. After all, everyone except Freida is interpreting “Indian” beauty at Cannes. Nandita is the real thing. Both Freida and nandita own their looks, without being costumey. Payal and Priyanka are hardly championing Nandita over the others. Its just that when her pix appear, many go gaga and the designer types get upset at all the attention a “simple” look is getting.

        • Why does dressing like sluts become fashion? There is grace and dignity here and if those ‘glamorous’ ladies had anything to offer they too would have carried off this style. When you have nothing going for you well you have to be Sonam Kapoor. I am hoping this blog will celebrate clothes for the self-made intelligent woman as much as they do of the airheads and kept women ( aka wives of rich men)

  2. I am sorry, just because it is Nandita doesn’t mean she can’t do no wrong, that’s a loud gaudy kanchivaram and doesn’t look good on her either!

    • I guess you missed her previous red carpet looks. Her stylist actually worked on her this time and she’s looking nice. This color is loud and not working on her but she is looking sweet and simple.

      • Disagree. This colour looks great on her. Previously when she wore a subtle colour people said it looks dull etc etc. I guess there critics can never be pleased. 🙂

      • I loved her previous appearances at Cannes, the yellow salwar and the purple saree and am a great admirer of her beauty.. But this is a sh…y color and doesn’t suit her, it looks loud and gaudy.. But her make up, jewelry, hair are spot on as always !

      • I agree. It is loud and these Kanjivarams with the broad gold borders are a pet peeve of mine. I wouldn’t pick this in a silk sari store. Nandita of course is perfection but not the outfit. I really liked her purple choice from last time.

    • That’s a pretty standard “mango” coloured Kanjeevaram. Hardly gaudy. And great on dusky skin.

Nandita is always “same same” and yet lovely and perfect each time.

  3. She looks nice, but the sari is not suiting her. Its also worn a litle casually compared to the other looks. I would love to get a close up of her necklace though, looks lovely but not clear? Both Vidya and Nandita were holding hands with someone (hopefully their spouses) and would be nice to see the whole look just once. Star wives get the privilege so why discriminate?

  4. Nandita makes a statement by not trying for it. She always sports classy sarees weaved from India and makes it look so elegant.

  5. Gorgeous ! the colour looks amazing on her skin tone. I would have liked the pallu/mundhani pleated up but thats nitpicking. She looks GORGEOUS !!

and i completely agree about that untucked hair.
Oh nandita, please don’t change one bit!

  7. Beautiful! Where does she buy her silk saris??! I want! Don’t agree that the colour is loud….it’s a beautiful mustard which looks amazing on Indian skin tones.

  8. she represents today’s Indian womwan… confident and wearing her Indian identity so proudly.. and no, she does’nt need a manish malhotra or a sabya dressing her OTT ending up looking like a clown… hat’s off Nandi…

  9. I like her not only becuz shes simply beautiful but also because she is one amng the few actresses in the film fraternity of India who is of my skin tone and is outspoken abt the discrimination we hve in r country..

  10. Sweet? Thats so condescending and charitable. She looked beautiful the way its possible to look beautiful without having twenty people working on your wardrobe.

  11. OOps, that strand of hair really spoiled the look – her whole hair do felt so off, maybe due to that one thing……….. an almost for me

  12. I know PnP have a thing for homespun saris but how lackluster is this look? A very ordinary sari, with no effort on make up or even combing your hair back. Maybe she wants to prove that serious filmmaker a don’t need to be glamorous or maybe it’s her personal style but this look is boring and underwhelming for a red carpet appearance.

    • I, like PnP, am very proud of the handloom heritage of India. If you find this saree lackluster, then sadly you do not appreciate the workmanship, artistry and grace of handlooms. But, it is your choice, the same way I can’t stand all the blingy sarees that most celebrities wear, which makes half of them look trashy.

  13. She looks great! That colour looks great on her dusky skin. She has stayed true to her style, but has changed her hair for all the red carpet appearances, and I love the hair with the lock to the side. Even the sarees, although all handloom, seem so varied. Love her jewellery! Classic beauty!

  14. Love! My only gripe is that the body color is so bright, it would have been nice to see a richer contrast color on the blouse and piping below the border -(navy or plum would have loked amazing). But minor gripe – she looks great, and I’m def. in the category of classic is better than overly blingy – others (incl. Ms. Balan) could benefit frm dialing it down in Cannes.

Hair – not clear it was deliberate – that hair is short and may have just escaped from out of the ponytail.

  15. I am not feeling the look, lovely saree but draped so casually. If it was draped well, it would have taken the look to another level. Although Nandita’s personality shines through, despite messy drape.

  16. The sari is ok, a nice contrast, well stitched blouse could’ve saved this. Seriously, that’s an ill fitting blouse and it clearly shows. I know kanjeevaram silks saris and there are an abundance of gorgeous saris to choose from, this is rather boring. Again SMH at that ugly blouse.

  17. I think she looks gorgeous. Simple and elegant, quintessentially Indian without having to stick a nosering on her face (hint to the other designer wearing wannabes at Cannes)
