In Bambah

Wearing a strapless Bambah dress featuring a dramatic bow, Malaika attended Manish Malhotra’s party on Sunday evening. Pairing the checkered dress with a black and white ChloΓ© Drew crossbody bag, she finished out her look with a bold red lip and sky-high Louboutins.

It’s not that she didn’t look good in his look, she did. But, considering everyone else went more the casual route, her outfit felt a bit OTT relatively.

That brings up a good question to ask you guys. How many of you consider yourself that person that always dresses up no matter what the event or where the event is. πŸ˜› Go on, spill some secrets. No-one will ever find out. πŸ˜‰

  1. I m sure the one, my confession that as soon as I know there is an event to attend all I can think of is what to wear..and it has indeed happenrd more than once that people come in shorts where I go in formal dresses..??

  2. Love this look. The dress paired with those heels looks absolutely great on her. She is probably the only actress (beside Kangana) who has repeated her black loubs more than anyone can count (like Kangana has repeated her basic nude pumps loads of times.) πŸ™‚

To answer your question Payal – While I love dressing up but I’m one of the laziest people to do it! Because I usually step out of my home (during college and now that I’m working) without a speck of makeup, for me dressing up essentially means = New but non-office clothes + Kajal + Lip-balm. And then I team it up with either a hand accessory or earrings apart from my watch as a constant. πŸ™‚

  3. Definitely not me!! I consider myself on the other side of the spectrum, i.e., If I am dressed up more than the occasion calls for, you can be certain that I was of the idea that 2/3 of my crushes would turn up too!! ;):P

  4. Me πŸ˜€ … People in my office are now use to it but whenever a new person join the first reaction I get is ‘Is it your birthday today’ πŸ˜› :P:P
P.S.: People say I am Malaika doppelganger, so may be that is the reason πŸ˜€

  5. OMFG, i LOVE THIS!! She is not dressed up P&P, Malaika is wearing a sun dress + the only dressy thing here are the stillettos & they are right for a night event. ItΒ΄s a party & itΒ΄s more than appropriate for one in a fashion designerΒ΄s home! After all, we donΒ΄t leave our homes in our PJs to go about our days.

Who goes to parties underdressed really. ThatΒ΄s a sloppy trend that needs to die.

but have to say – “Not overdressed” is not “Underdressed”.
there always ways to dress up and not look like its your birthday everyday.
Nothing really wrong with overdressing either, except.. its overdressing πŸ˜›

I would kept the makeup toned down but other than that, she looks stunning in that sundress!

You’d be surprised at how many people in North America step out of their homes in their pyjamas/active wear. It is really a shame to see such laziness.

  6. So she finally is not doing her “oh look at me” poses. She looks good. And yeah I always dress up, better to look put together rather than under dressed. That does not mean I will wear my lehenga to a party at a club nor wear short, OTT or revealing clothes to any place of worship. Place appropriateness is for sure required.

  7. As a straight guy living in Canada, I find myself always overdressed. Men these days just seem to put on a thin t-shirt (which hides nothing) and wear shorts and show up.
The least I wear is a button down shirt (even if it is tres casual) and fitted jeans with shoes πŸ™

    • one of the reasons why i’m so fond of my husband [ i like him in general, otherwise too] is that he is always well turned out. event, place and time appropriate. he dresses simply, but well and is always clean! after growing up with a dad and brother who could be least bothered with dressing up, this is a big, refreshing change.

    • That to me is perfectly dressed ! πŸ™‚
My husband dresses the same way – button down shirts or collared tees, with fitted jeans and shoes / sandals depending on the occasion.
His style doesn’t change much, but he’s always well turned out – and that can never hurt πŸ™‚

  8. Finally she looks impeccably put together and how pretty she looks! Not posey posey and sexy is accentuating her beauty. Way to go Malaika!
To answer your question, I am one of those lazy couch potatoes who have an inkling of being underdressed often. For me my go to go accessories are a dash of kajal in my eyes, a watch and of course my roomy clothes. Parties mean I fret, fret and fret about what to wear. So yeah, I am a lazy dresser.

  9. I think she looks great. I don’t think she is all that overdressed for a party. Yes, maybe the pumps make it feel so. But she certainly does not look event inappropriate. I am usually the more dressed up one (not OTT) even at work. Better to be dressed up than turn up shabby looking!!

  10. Dressing up for me means looking put-together. Whether it’s a casual everyday outfit or a special occasion one, I make sure it’s neat, ironed, the right size & fit. Minimal makeup(most of the times).

  11. I love this dress and Malaika pulls it off so well! Any idea where one can buy it? And yeah, I usually dress up. I work in a non-profit in which most other people show up in jeans but I wear dresses and even when I wear jeans, I wear a dressy top or accessorize well. If I am invited to a party, I definitely make an effort. I live in Canada and have tons of desi clothes which barely see the light of day due to the weather, so for formal office occassions or weddings (even non desi ones), I’ll wear a saree if I can.

  12. I am most of the time underdressed (in terms of make up, accessories etc). I also have a tendency to pick non blingy clothes. So most of the times i appear to be the most ‘simply’ dressed person around… I once won a prize at a ladies meet for being the only lady who was not wearing any accessories!! the organizers could not believe that I did not even have my wedding ring on. Since I became a mom (three years back) my memory is on a downward spiral. I stopped wearing jewellery as i just could not remember where i would keep it once i took it off. So i have just locked up all my jewellery in a locker and have peace of mind!!! Make up,high heels etc and I are still not friends:)

  14. I always try to dress well, even while going grocery shopping. My motto is, even if I am going for grocery shopping, I should be able to change my mind and go watch a movie instead. But, I am overdressed at office and underdressed at desi functions. Like Apsara77 said, most of my colleagues turn up in extremely casual wear but I like to appear put together and wear dresses, skirts, etc. I never wear jeans to office, not even on Fridays. However, I own and wear minimal bling, and at any desi function, I appear underdressed!

  15. I have good quality, well fitting pieces in my wardrobe which I mix and match based on occasion, dressing up or down as required. I am quite minimalist at work but will always wear dressy earrings (gold or diamonds), eye liner and Longines dress watch. And always, always, always keep my hair freshly washed and styled.

  17. She looks good and seems determined to have a fun-night out.

I am in my early 30s and man, I am more confident and sure about myself than I was in my teens or 20s. I like to put some effort into getting ready to any place, anytime( having a toddler doesnt help but). Once, I have had experience of showing up all ‘dressy dressy’ for a beer festival in a somewhat interior/rural part of the US. EXcept for a couple of ladies there, all were in ganjis and shorts and didnt give a damn in that summer heat. But I felt goooood. Usually for parties, i try to look classy with good makeup, outfit, a solid watch, shoes and try to be minimalist with other accessories/ jewellery. These are the small pleasures in life… Or big? And that is why I scroll through your blog everyday religiously.

  19. These comments are wonderful.

I think for me, when it comes to clothes, I am at mercy of my mood. Like everything else my personal style comes as a phase and makes me change and evolve. For example right now my closet is full with clothes that has length & layers dominated by pastel or earthy colors. It’s so hot and sunny I feel like covering my skin at all time. Oh and I have long hair now to match my current state of mind.
Few years back my summer style was shorts, shorts and nothing but shorts accompanied by hats! I was known as the ‘hat lady’ in school. The first time I wore a full length boyfriend jeans, my friends took two minutes to recognise me.
And yes I love to dress up, whether it’s a short or a Saree I always try to make an effort. My new found love is makeup so I am trying my hands on that. Previously I was snooty about wearing anything but my kajal but now I love it. I have passed my ethnic jewelry phase many years back and I mastered walking in stilettos and sneakers!
But there are these rare days, when I am too dishevelled to make an effort so I just concentrate on being that and own it!

  21. While living in Milan, I was really impressed with how well the women dressed there. I saw studded leather skirts, leather pants, beautiful Chanel suits worn to office, patent leather trench coat on the subway, silk dress and beautiful oxblood lipstick worn to the supermarket. I myself wore a gold brocade skirt once just to go to a cafe, drink coffee and people watch. It sure turned heads. It really changed my perspective towards dressing up. I always liked it and did it occasionally earlier, but always felt guilty or like the odd one out. Now when I think about it, everyday is a celebration. One never knows if one will even be alive the next day…or have the money to match shoes. Might as well live like everyday is the last, to whatever extent one can afford. Viva la bella figura!

    • I really love your comment. πŸ™‚ Instead of being snobbish about being fashionable, you presented in a meaningful way. There is nothing superior about being fashionable nor inferior about being unfashionable or not dressing up. Dressing up is just celebrating every day and enjoying every day.

  22. Great discussion everyone, a good way to open up about yourself. Before I start, I would like to give credit to HHC to help revive my fashion sensibilities, though I’ve loved clothes even when I was in school. I dress up to show my willingness to enjoy the day or the moment, not to set myself apart. At work I show up nicely put together, casual, mixing and matching separates as much as I can.
I mostly wear eyeliner, lipsticks, and concealer, but wears a whole lot more of make up if there’s a party or an occasion. In western wear, I prefer wearing clothes which are right fit, size, nicely cut and tailored, and comfortable, mostly tops of vast variety with straight cut pants. I recently experimented by adding long flowy cape/ kaftan to the separates.I love desi fashion, I mostly wear roomy Kurtas of knee or below knee length with variety of bottoms. I wear high heels at parties, and flat shoes the rest of the time. I’ve a good collection of jewelry that I often wear. I often get compliments because of the way I dress up.
My husband also like putting in some effort dressing up, esp at weekends. He mostly wear dressy shirts, and collared tees with pants/jeans, and sometimes jackets/blazers too. I have him wear desi kurtas in subtle colors on occasions.
