In Ashwin Thiyagarajan

Maitreyi attended the Unforgettable Gala in Los Angeles on Saturday evening wearing Ashwin Thiyagarajan’s upcycled benarasi dress, one that we saw just a few days ago on Taapsee at the Filmfare Awards.

Loved the dress on Maitreyi too.

  2. First – Lovely US young star, way prettier in person – never understood why showrunner Mindy Kaling’s shows makes her gals “ordinary”. Indians usually need little or no styling beyond the right gear – such a natural beaut.

Next (shouts) : Ugh the India Saree Redux is the designer equivalent of an American patchwork quilt with heritage, signature cultural heft – kinda lazy design.

What next – saree coaster placemats, curtains ? White lace curtains from my bridal train? Oh oh -maybe cushion covers from a kimono.

    Y’all, please just stop.

    • Weird..its just fabric at the end of the day.

If it keeps our artisans in employment why not – bring on curtains, cushion covers, bags. All available since eons in India by the way.

Upcycling saris is also around, I Was A Sari for example.

As for this dress it is really made well and fits well, looks good on both Taapsee and Maitreyi

  3. She looks great. The dress isn’t cute because its made of benarasi scraps. It’s cute because its colourful and fits well and goes with the young actor’s persona.
This constant need for movie stars to culturally represent is super boring. This is some weird mixture of national insecurity and need for validation. Let the actors dress and be whatever they want.

    • I don’t think it’s a need for validation. Rather I feel like it’s a joyful representation of a part of their identity which is inherently tied to the culture they come from. Their freedom to express that gives us representation too. I love it. She looks amazing and makes a statement.
