End Of An Era.

Both hailed once by Vogue magazine among world’s 10 most beautiful women, they were charismatic and stunning and made an irreplaceable place for themselves on many impressionable young women in their own time… And will continue to do so much after.

Where Ms. Naidu lit up the silver screen and delighted the movie-goers, Maharani Gayatri Devi set new standards for grace and charm.

As little girls, we were smitten by Maharani’s breezy chiffons and pearls. As grown women we can only hope to be half as dignified and graceful.

They will be sorely missed.

  1. I have read Maharani’s autobiography ‘A Princess Remembers’. It was fascinating, the parties, the people, clothing, jewelry, palaces, polo matches, the age, the romance, her fab lifestyle. However what struck me most was the sense of loss , her loss. She lost most of her beloved family during her lifetime. Her husband, her two brothers, one of them dying horribly in a fire, death of her elder sister, her step daughter, her only son, all dead, before their time, dying young.
However, her grace in the face of all these losses was remarkable.I wish she now finds her way back to her beloved husband Jai.

  2. Such a sad loss to see both of them go so close to each other. I still remember the movie Anuradha, Leela Naidu was so dignified and graceful. In the very few movies she worked in, she left a mark.
Gayatri Devi, as most agree, was the epitome of beauty. She had the most striking and alluring face when she was young, and as she aged, she became the symbol of grace. She also promoted girl education in Rajasthan, and as women, we should carry that mission forward.

  3. Such beautiful women, i dont think most of the so called celebrities of today can even hold a candle to them. They were intelligent, modern and independent, yet graceful, charming and elegant.

  4. These were true Fashionistas ….. they could make style statements way before most could understand what fashion is let alone STYLE!
PS : So called “sale-e-brities” n “social-lites” take a cue n set standards which are high ….. what say bloggers?

  5. my Mom has a Life magazine, with a spread of Maharani Gayatri Devi in Jodhpurs with Jackie Kennedy and she overshadows Jackie completely. Looking so to the manor born and regal and decadent all at the same time. FAB. Will be all truely missed.

  6. Both beautiful women, gracious, regal.
Just as Jackie O, a New World royalty made the pillbox hat fashionable, Maharani G made the chiffon and pearls a mainstay for desiclass.

  7. When I grow old, I hope to be atleast half as graceful and a quarter as beautiful as either of them. May their souls rest in peace.
