Letters

Hey Payal and Pri,
I saw the post about the Letters section in your blog and decided to ask you guys something I’ve been trying to find for long.

First query –

I live in the US, but will be moving to India soon. I’ve never really gotten any designer bags, but am thinking of getting one. Nothing too high end, but rather in the budget range of max 300 or around.. I really like hobo bags, but recently started liking the shoulder totes as well.

I really want to get something that will last me long (won’t go out of fashion very fast), and will appeal to Indian surroundings as well.

I really don’t like the two strap types, would rather have a single strap – makes it easier to balance on the shoulder.

Second query –

I’ve also been looking for something that looks like this, but can’t find them anywhere! can you tell me what this style is called, your opinion on it and where can I find some nice models in this, without being too expensive?

Thank you so much guys!
Sue.

………………..

Dear Sue,
From the choices that you sent us, we loved the first one, the Michael Kors “Brookeville” Shoulder Tote.

Michael Kors “Brookeville” Shoulder Tote

If you are still not sold on the Kors (specially with the coming sale), here are two suggestions that will fit right in your budget. The Coach and the Dooney are both under $300 and are simple and elegant. The Coach also comes in a black in case you were worried about the cream.

Coach Soho Leather Hobo

Dooney & Bourke Medium East/West Slouch

Buy via Coach for $268
Buy via Dooney for $275

Being the bag fanatics that we are, we couldn’t resist the temptation to go a little beyond. We found two bags that although are a little above your budget, would be fantastic additions to your closet!

MARC BY MARC JACOBS ‘Dr. Q – Huge Hillier’ Hobo Bag

Kate Spade Narragansett Stevie

Buy the Marc By Marc Jacobs via Nordstorm for $475
Buy the Stevie via Kate Spade for $425

Regarding your second question, there is no specific name for the double handle hobo as such. It all depends on a particular bag’s style and we did find one thats really nice and thats on sale at Kate Spade for $263, which is quite a steal!

Kate Spade Hudson Street Small Carla

Buy the Carla via Kate Spade

Let us know what your final choice is to be!

  2. Sue!
Make sure to check out your local outlet stores. I recently visited the woodbury commons outlet store in upstate new york….they have some decent stores including Bottega Veneta, Tory Birch, Coach, burberry, Michael Kors and many more! I snagged a bag from their Montauk collection for 1/3rd of the price aka $120…its not last season stuff either.

anyway they have these outlets all over the nation: check it out if you like.

  5. hey sue,

you can also look for website online that sell designer bags at really reduced prices. these bags are usually from the last year’s fashion lines, but if you find a style that is pretty generic, you can use that bag for a long time. i just bought a prada satchel bag in white from last year’s spring line on one of these websites for $350 while the original price was $1275!!! goodluck 🙂

  6. Well thre are plenty of such sites and they can be quite dubious. There are so many “gooood fakes” out there and many authentic looking sites take people for a ride. If the price is crazy low then you shud definitely suspect. Some websites like bluefly are authentic but make sure you do your research, if its too good to be true, it probab is.

  7. Thank you everyone for the great suggestions! I must admit I now have to struggle to stop myself from buying more than one bag 🙂 I think I am going to get the Kors bag and also eyeing the Kate Spade 🙂

I am going to Macys today to find the Kors, and T – I will go to the outlets this weekend, will see if I can find any further deals.

Anon, I live in Chicago, so no sample sales for me (atleast not that I know of).. but thanks for the tip.

Thank you Payal and Pri again, for taking time out and writing such a nice researched post.

  8. I think the bags that they mentioned are for more middle age audience. They are cool, while large population of india may not be even with familiar with designers that they mentioned. Why not go with little more funky and flair..like Guess Purse..and even cheap like under $100

  9. Hello Sue.

Yes you can go to http://www.guess.com and click on Accesories. They have large collection of hobos and other kinds. I am sure you will like some and it also stands out. I personally own one cost me about $100 and it has studded Big G in rhinestone. I love it ! they also have outlets try them ! They are good and quality and cheap compare to other brands.

  10. By the letter I understand Sue wanted a bag around 300ish, semi-high end, am sure if she asked for budget bag they would have recommended bags under whtever price point…

I personally find guess too high-schoolish and the bags that they have chosen are classics (in tht price range) and will last her beyond just a phase and like one of the comments mentioned have nothing “middle-age” aout them, puh-leez!

and helloo, everyone in india knows marc jacaobs, kate spade and coach. come on! and a bag with guess logo all over, or even rhinestone studded G, come on, haven’t you been reading the blog, no flashy logos!

Fashion is so subjective and while am glad you have so much faith in us (really!) I do also hope you guys can keep your comments impersonal!

    @ Rashmi

You need to be more specific about what you are looking for, makes it easier to find them… Price? Size? Specific utility?

    @ Curious

You know what they say about the curious?? ;)) Will make a post about it sooon…

  12. Dear Anonymous

It was my personal comment for sue while some may not agree. But, there is nothing wrong in having a logo on bag. In case logo isnt the big deal I guess we would all go to no name bags !!! My point is Guess bags are lil more glamourous and stylish and not so plain and no all there bags dont carry logos as you mentioned ! I guess you didnt shop them before !
Payal and Pri nothing personal to you guys. It was my opinon and fashion is all about personal taste 🙂
